Students in visual communication design have many opportunities to strengthen their classroom education with experiences in a professional environment. One of the most beneficial experiences is the required internship. This offers the chance to apply learning to practical situations and gain valuable field knowledge. Many students find that their internship helps them determine their career goals and direction.
Other extended field study opportunities include the AIGA Portfolio Day and visits to museums, exhibitions, and businesses affiliated with the field of design.
On campus, student business groups such as Enactus (formerly Students in Free Enterprise) and AMG (Anderson Media Group) offer opportunities to participate on design projects. Majors may apply for work-study positions to assist professors within the department. These positions provide experience with studio procedures and maintenance.
All students, regardless of major, have the opportunity to apply for a studio each semester. These studios are located in a group configuration in an effort to foster a community of working, sharing, and the exchange of ideas.
