Arlon Bayliss Artist Statement

Natural forms and the qualities of hot and cold glass inspire all my work. My architectural projects explore light, space, and movement, and result in installations that engage the viewer and activate space. My studio work is fertile ground from which my designs for industry and architecture grow. My training in Europe as a hot glassmaker and designer and my experience working in factories led me to see the potential for collaborative work in architectural glass commissions and public sculpture projects. An exploratory approach to designing enables me to challenge architects, engineers, and fabricators to bring the best of their experiences and creative problem solving to each project.

I have been an educator and an artist since 1983, and see both as essential elements in my work. My exploratory approaches to art and design are strengthened by my work as a teacher, and my insistence on continually challenging myself, and my collaborators, results in my encouragement to students to do the same.
