An exhibition of posters from the Jessie. C. Wilson Galleries Permanent Collection. These WWII propaganda posters were designed by major artists from the period including Jean Carlu and Norman Rockwell. Support for the exhibition is provided by AIGA Indy.
This collection of posters offers viewers an opportunity to examine a tumultuous time in American history and consider the critical role visual artists served in the war effort. Posters proved to be a crucial form of visual communication throughout the 20th century, especially during World War II, when the US government used them to enlist support of its citizens.
Of special interest is the variety of approaches to poster design; photography, typography, and collage integrate with persuasive messages to encourage support of the war effort. The posters also show the influences of period art movements.
