Art and Design

Description of the program

The Department of Art and Design offers more than an art degree; it offers a comprehensive approach to understanding the world and expressing oneself creatively. All first-year students take a sequence of intensive studio foundation courses that utilize journaling, discussion, and critique.

The Department of Art and Design provides students with the foundations for general or professional activities and/or continuing graduate studies in studio art, graphic design, and art education. Students accomplish this through scholarly research, intensive studio practice, professional work experience, and by observing and working closely with the faculty of artists and designers. Ultimately, students graduate with appreciation for and a broad understanding of the visual arts which prepares them for roles of leadership and stewardship within their respective disciplines

Facilities

The Department of Art and Design has outstanding facilities in all areas of studio instruction. The design program has its own Mac lab; the glass shop has multiple furnaces and cold working equipment; the sculpture lab has metal and wood fabrication equipment and a well-maintained foundry. There is a photo/darkroom facility and a print shop for lithography, intaglio and silkscreen. The department houses well-designed exhibition areas in the Wilson Galleries, collections in American painting, European prints, and the Warner Sallman collection of popular religious imagery.

Internships

The Department of Art and Design requires internship experiences for visual communication design majors and fine arts studio-glass majors. Visual art/education majors must complete a student teaching assignment. Our design and studio majors have fulfilled this requirement with prominent companies in their respective fields. All majors are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities.

Job Placement

The department maintains a very high percentage of placements for recent graduates in all of the majors. The record is especially notable in graphic design and glass. Our graduates have also been admitted into graduate studies programs at a number of universities.
