Clinical Assignments: ACI/Student Expectations
The following is a list of the expectations that you should have of your ACI and the ACI will have of you while you are engaged in a clinical assignment. Further expectations may be discussed by your individual ACI at the time of your clinical assignment.
ACI Expectations
- Communicate schedule changes in a timely manner
- Allow the ATS to make the first move in injury evaluation
- Be open to new ways of doing things and be willing to teach alternative ways
- Understand the student is in a learning process
- Institute informal educational sessions with the ATS on a daily basis
- Have a positive attitude
- Orientate the ATS to the clinical site, including all appropriate facilities and emergency equipment. Share with the ATS the emergency action plan for that site.
- Stand behind the students and support their decisions/actions
- Be punctual
- Provide valuable feedback, comments, and questions to ATS
- Uphold the NATA code of ethics
- Uphold the policies and procedures indicated in the Athletic Training Student Handbook
- Provide consistent visual and auditory supervision
- Demonstrate professionalism in both words and actions
- Complete all evaluations of ATS in timely fashion
- Encourage open dialogue with the ATS
Student Expectations
- Wear proper attire
- Report to ACI the findings of all injury assessments and be prepared to establish an injury management plan
- Demonstrate professionalism in both words and actions
- Be an active learner who puts forth consistent and substantial effort
- Be punctual
- Communicate schedule conflicts ahead of time
- Have a positive attitude
- Expect and understand the need for constructive criticism
- Ask questions of the ACI
- Uphold the NATA code of ethics
- Uphold the policies and procedures indicated in the Athletic Training Student Handbook
