Athletic Training
Description of the programAn athletic trainer is a highly qualified health care professional who specializes in prevention, recognition, management, and rehabilitation of injuries that result from physical activity. As a part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches, and parents. Students who want to become certified athletic trainers must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training program. |

Qualifications
First and foremost, the athletic trainer must have a genuine interest in athletes and active individuals and have a sincere concern for the total well being of the athletes. The athletic trainer must have confidence, integrity, a sense of humor, good communication skills, and common sense. They must be skilled in the areas of taping, wrapping, padding, injury assessment, injury rehabilitation, and have knowledge of first aid and emergency procedures. The athletic trainer may also be involved in such areas as development of conditioning programs, nutritional counseling, equipment purchasing, equipment fitting, classroom teaching, budgeting, and administrative duties.
Accreditation
The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) is the national organization that accredits athletic training education programs in the United States. Anderson University offers a CAATE-accredited athletic training curriculum. Athletic training students will meet the requirements to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination through educational programs accredited by CAATE. Anderson University was the first private university in the state of Indiana with CAATE accreditation.
