Definitions Related to Clinical Education
- Clinical Education: The application of knowledge and skills, learned in classroom and laboratory settings, to actual practice on patients under the supervision of an approved clinical instructor (ACI) or a clinical instructor (CI).
- Clinical Experience: Those clinical education experiences for the Athletic Training Student that involve patient care and the application of athletic training skills under the supervision of a qualified instructor.
- Clinical Assignment: Usually a field experience with an athletic team, either at AU or one of the local high schools, under the constant supervision of an approved clinical instructor (ACI). The clinical assignment is scheduled around the sport season, and the student will be engaged in that assignment through the entirety of that sport’s season.
- Clinical Affiliation : Institutions, clinics, or other health settings not under the authority of the sponsoring institution but that are used for clinical experiences. These off-campus experiences include rotations at Central Indiana Orthopedics, Community Hospital, and Anderson Family Practice.
- Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI): An appropriately credentialed professional identified and trained by the program to provide instruction and evaluation of the Athletic Training Educational Competencies and/or Clinical Proficiencies. Each ATC that you will be assigned to is an approved clinical instructor (ACI).
- Clinical Instructor (CI): An individual identified to provide supervision of athletic training students during their clinical experience. An ACI may also be a CI. In our program, we utilize other health care professionals (MD, RN, LPN, PT, PTA, PAC, etc.) to serve as clinical instructors while supervising students during off-campus clinical affiliation rotations.
