Description of Majors
Computer Science (52 hours)
The computer science major prepares students to work in areas where computer science is the main purpose of the business. This is a very traditional major that is appropriate for students wishing to pursue careers or graduate work in computer science. Students pursuing a major or minor in computer science are urged to complete additional coursework in mathematics, accounting, business administration, physics or related areas.
Computer Science – Mathematics (52 hours)
The computer science – mathematics major is designed to prepare a student for entry into areas drawing heavily upon both disciplines. Companies working in engineering, game theory, switching theory, and pure mathematics would be interested in such a graduate. The track also represents an excellent path to graduate work in computer science or mathematics.
Information Systems (52 hours)
The information systems major prepares students for working in those places where the computer is used heavily to carry out the mission of the company but is often not the principle reason for the company's existence. This is a major that is appropriate for careers in computer science and graduate work in computer science or business.
Computer Science (complementary major) (32 hours)
The complementary major for computer science is designed for students wishing to add a computing option to an existing major. It is not a stand-alone major. Students will take Computer Science I and II, Database Programming, and Computer Science Senior Capstone. Students will take an additional 12 hours of computer science courses and four hours of mathematics courses. This major is particularly appropriate for students whose first major is in any of the sciences or in business.
Business - Information Systems (complementary major) (31 hours)
The complementary major for business-information systems is designed for students wishing to add a combined business-computing option to an existing major. It is not a stand-alone major. Students will take Computer Science I, Computer Science II or Visual Programming, Database Programming, and one additional Computer Science course along with Principles of Accounting I, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing, e-Business, and e-Commerce. Almost any major can be strengthened by adding this coursework.
Description of Minors
Computer Science (16 hours)
The computer science minor includes courses in Computer Science I and II, Computer Architecture, and Discrete Mathematical Structures. Students who need to develop computer skills (especially students majoring in the sciences) will find that this minor greatly enhances the marketability of their major.
Information Systems (16 hours)
The information systems minor allows students to broaden their technology skills through coursework in computer applications, programming, and database and system administration.
Electrical Engineering (18 hours)
The electrical engineering minor is designed to give students an understanding of the principles behind today's technology. These courses are offered through the Department of Computer Science but are taught by Purdue University faculty using Purdue University facilities near campus.
