French courses offered (upper-division courses are taught in French):

  • Elementary and Intermediate
  • Conversation
  • Phonetics (taught in English; text is in French)
  • Composition
  • Survey of French Literature (Middle Ages to 20th Century, two semesters)
  • Civilization and Culture
  • Modern France
  • Advanced French Grammar
  • Special Topics (examples of past topics include Francophone Literatures of West Africa, Francophone Literatures of the Arab Worlds, 17th Century French Theatre, 19th Century Realism and Naturalism, 20th Century Theatre, and Business French)
  • Directed Individual Study (studying a particular interest of the student, such as creative writing, religion in France, translation, studying a specific author, etc.)

All majors must study abroad (France, Québec, Sénégal, the Antilles, etc.):

  • Most have gone to France (with various U.S. programs in Angers, Caen, Dijon,Grenoble, Montpellier, Paris, Nancy, and Strasbourg).
  • A few have gone to Université Laval in Québec City

For all language majors, a team-taught senior capstone course (in English, but with aspects in the student’s target language) deepens and completes the course sequence.
