Sally Jo Shulmistras, tenured professor of French, received her B.A. (in French, history, and secondary education) from California Lutheran College and her M.A. (French literature) from Purdue University. She studied French civilization at New York University and earned two Certificats des etudes supérieures de la civilisation contemporaine française (equivalent to an M.A.). She has also done graduate work at the Institut des Etudes Politiques and the Haute Ecole du Protestantisme in Paris and at the University of Illinois. Professor Shulmistras has lived and studied in France (the Sorbonne, Université de Dijon, CAVILAM in Vichy), and taught English in a French lycée for two years. She initiated the establishment of Alpha Mu Gamma at AU, served as its national president from 1996-1998, and is currently chair of the AMG scholarship committee.
She has coordinated and taught the Saturday Morning French classes for the community since 1975, when she helped establish the International Snow Class exchange program (now Back-to-Back) between Anderson and France. She travels to France annually, interprets at international events, and does translations. She continues her academic involvement by attending and presenting at professional conferences attended by foreign language teachers and at Alpha Mu Gamma biennial conventions.

Janet E. Newbold, assistant professor of French, received her B.A. from Wheaton College and her M.A. from Rutgers University. She lived in Nantes, France, for two years, earning a Certificat de français comme langue pratique (3ème degré) from the Université de Nantes, and teaching English at the Ecole normale supérieure de mécanique (a French school of engineering). After returning to the United States, Professor Newbold developed a French program at Mackinac College. She has taught at Anderson University for the past 25 years. In 1998, she was certified as an oral proficiency interview tester by the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language. In recent years, she has studied in Aix-en-Provence and taught at Chez Vous in Normandy as well as traveled and conducted research on language and identity in French Polynesia and the French Antilles. Ministry and music have played an important role in her life, in church settings, as well as in the teaching profession. Family, travel, and crosscultural friendships are her other passions in life.
