Emily Hogue

Graduate student in Lima, Peru

Bachelor of Arts, Spanish and English major

Anderson University offered me a nourishing learning environment. The English Department influenced my analytical and writing skills, while the Modern Foreign Languages Department prepared me linguistically and helped me develop the cultural awareness I would need after graduation. I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Quito, Ecuador, for two years, before returning to AU to teach Spanish for a year. I then served a year as a volunteer coordinator with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, working primarily with Hispanic families. Currently, I am in Lima, Peru, studying for a Master of Anthropology degree at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Peru. The academic foundation I gained at AU was important; but even more important was the spirit of service I observed in the faculty, staff and students, who were devoted to Christ's teachings and worked to create a loving, content and peaceful world.

For the Record

  • A state-of-the-art computer language lab—complete with Internet access, CD/ROM drives, a big screen television, VCR and DVD player, and satellite programming from around the world—is available to students.
  • The department taps into central Indiana's growing Hispanic population with community service projects in schools, hospitals and businesses, allowing students to interact with native Spanish speakers.
  • AU is active in Alpha Mu Gamma (AMG), the national collegiate foreign language honor society. Five students have won AMG scholarships in as many years, and one student received the only national AMG scholarship for summer study at Laval University in Quebec.
  • Language opportunities are found on campus through foreign language chapel services, the Saturday Morning French Program, and Immersion Nights, which are social events where no English is spoken.
  • The department encourages students to pursue a double major. The department offered specialized Spanish courses in 2002 and 2004 for students studying medical health-care professions, in 2003 and 2005 for business students, and in 2006 for students in social work and law enforcement. These specialized Spanish courses will continue to be offered on a rotating basis.

Unique Opportunities

The Department of Modern Foreign Languages is active in the Tri-S program. Foreign language students have participated in recent trips to France, the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Span. French students have the opportunity to teach French to members of the community through the Saturday Morning French Program.
