Joani Somppi Brandon is an associate professor of music education and teaches music education general/choral methods courses and directs the Women's Chorus. The nine years prior to her current assignment, Joani taught choral and general music at Clay Junior High School in Carmel, Indiana. She previously taught choral and general music for three years at Wilmington Junior High School, in Wilmington, Ohio, where she received the Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the year award and was a top ten finalist for new teacher of the year in 1987-88.
Joani completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and Piano Performance, with honors in music and education, from Anderson University in 1987. In 1995, she completed her Masters in Music Education from Butler University where she studied conducting with Henry Leck, director of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. In 1993, Joani studied at the Choral Music Institute with Doreen Rao, Barbara Tagg, and Janet Galvan. In 2002, Joani completed Kodaly Certification at Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford (Connecticut). In 2005, Joani completed certification in Orff Schulwerk, where she serves as program director for the Anderson University Orff Certification course. Joani is currently completing dissertation work at Boston University where she is a doctoral candidate. Research interests include curriculum and history of teacher training of Orff and Kodaly methodologies. She is an active clinician for area schools and has served in this capacity for Indiana Music Educators Association Noncompetitive Festivals and Circle the State with Song.
Joani is a member of the national and state chapters of the American Choral Directors Assocation, Music Educators National Conference, Society of Music Teacher Education, Organization of American Kodaly Educators, American Orff Schulwerk Association, and is a past repertoire chair of the Elementary and Junior High Divisions for the Indiana School Music Association. Joani is involved in the music ministry at Park Place Church of God where she serves as director for the Sanctuary Choir.
