Judy Shockey Carter
Judy Shockey Carter is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and teaches in the Bachelors and Masters programs. In the Bachelors program, she teaches Intercultural Health Care, Biomedical Ethics, Neuroscience, Hematology, Oncology, and Senior Seminar. In the Masters program, she teaches Introduction to Graduate Study, Organizational Finance and Health Care, Nursing Theory, Diversity in Healthcare, Assessment and Evaluation in Nursing Education, and Leadership Seminar. Prior to teaching at Anderson University, Judy worked for Women’s Hospital of Indianapolis for fifteen years in various positions including staff nurse in Maternal/Child Health, Education Director, Quality Director, and Chief Nursing Officer. She also worked at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI for five years in the discipline of Pediatrics. Working in all aspects of Pediatrics, her specialty areas were Peds ER including helicopter transport, Peds Oncology and Hematology, and Neonatal Intensive Care. She received an award for Excellence in Pediatric Care from Butterworth Hospital. During her time at Women’s Hospital, she received several awards including Nurse Excellence of the Year and Excellence in Leadership and Management.
Judy completed her Associate Degree in Nursing from Grand Rapids Junior College in 1983. She started her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Indiana University and completed it at University o f Phoenix graduating with honors in 2007. During this time, she taught clinical experiences for IU School of Nursing at Women’s Hospital. Feeling the call to teach nursing at a Christian University, Judy completed her Master of Science in Nursing with a Specialization in Healthcare Education from University of Phoenix graduating with honors in 2008. Her areas of interest include staff development, Cultural Diversity and responsiveness, and hospice and palliative care. She currently works for PeopleFirst Hospice in staff development, patient assessment, and case management. She also works as a volunteer for hospice patients and families in education and support. Judy is working on a book elucidating hospice care.
Judy is a member of Upsilon Gamma chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, a national honor society for nursing. She serves on the Board of Trustees of Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida. Previously serving on the Advisory Board of Nursing 2000 in Indianapolis, she remains active in promoting Nursing Education and Scholarship through funding projects for potential nursing students.
Judy’s three children (Jaree Kratzer, Ryan Shockey, and Jennalee Allbee) are Anderson Alumni. Her late husband, Richard Shockey, was the State Minister for Indiana and an adjunct Professor for AU. She married Preston Carter in May, 2007.
