About the Family Science Program
Family science is a professional area of study focusing on the family. The underlying assumption of the profession is that the family is one of the most enduring of all social institutions and a basic unit in society. The more effective the family unit is in meeting the needs and goals of its members, the more society benefits from socially and emotionally healthy and productive citizens.
Anderson University’s Family Science program is certified by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). The program prepares students for professional careers in a variety of human service areas, including family services and youth programs, family life and parent education programs, business and government agencies, and leadership roles in church, school, and community. The program offers students a strong foundation for graduate work. Graduates of the program are eligible to receive provisional certification as a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE). Full certification is available when alums complete sufficient work experience after graduation.
Why choose AU for Family Science?
Anderson University’s family science program provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors for successfully navigating through the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Students benefit from an academic program that is challenging yet offered in a supportive, mentoring environment. In addition, students study under an academically prepared faculty with a wealth of experience in their respective fields and highly committed to applying a Christian perspective to academic and social issues to help students achieve their academic and career goals.
Students pursue work-related experiences through internships, practicums, volunteering, and some paid summer work with diverse populations and social agencies locally, nationally, and internationally. Students may also obtain leadership experience in the local chapter of the Family Science Student Association. One of the most attractive features of this field of study is the dual benefit it affords. The knowledge students obtain during their course of study not only prepares them for a career but is also directly applicable to improving the quality of their own personal lives by gaining skills to deal with many of the issues confronting all people in daily living.
