Theatre Studies Program
The Program for Theatre Studies is a small, highly focused major, concentrating its efforts on producing highly skilled artists. As much as is possible within a liberal arts context, the program is operated as a conservatory, requiring a dedication of time and energies far beyond the confines of the classroom.
We believe that the art of theatre is first and foremost about creating— something God does full time.
The major requires a minimum of 32 credit hours of course-work to graduate. In addition, students are required to complete a portfolio project of sufficient scope to demonstrate "mastery" in their field of interest (performance, production, or academics). The principal laboratory for study and training is the Theatre at Anderson University’s theatrical season, which offers 5-6 major productions during the academic year.
One to two of these shows offer students the opportunity to direct, manage, and produce a full-scale production on the same level as their faculty/professional counterparts. Many artistic and managerial staff positions are filled by theatre majors/minors and are administered via the same professional criteria as is the marketplace. We consider these "real world" experiences to be the strongest element of our program, and the ones which distinguishes this program from others.
