   Title:Campus prepares to welcome new students during orientation

AU is setting the stage to begin a new school year with the theme “Laying Your Foundation,” which will welcome new students between August 30 and September 9. According to Brad Bowser, director of Student Activities, there will be sessions for parents and students to help them become familiar with faculty, staff and resident directors. In addition, students will fill out paperwork and discover where to go for help during the academic year. “Orientation is something very special that Anderson University always provides to help new students feel welcomed when they arrive on campus,” said Bowser. “It really helps them become familiar with campus community—particularly what we’re about and what’s going to happen during the first school year.” For a complete schedule, see below.

Thursday, August 30

7 p.m.
President’s Convocation & Reception
Dr. James L. Edwards, President of Anderson University, leads this traditional service for new students and their parents. Reardon Auditorium

10:30 p.m.
Three R’s, Residence Hall Lounges
Get to know your RD, RA’s, Roommate, and other students who live in your residence hall.

Friday, August 31

9:30 a.m.
Family Group Meeting
A time to start getting to know your Family Group and Leaders. Group assignments and where to meet are posted in Decker Commons, Olt Student Center, and residence halls.

10:30 a.m.
Rally in the Valley
Are you ready to begin “Laying Your Foundation?” Meet in front of Nicholson Library, valley side. (rain: Byrum Hall).

11 a.m.
Community Expectations, Byrum Hall
At Anderson University, a community atmosphere is formed when each member knows the expectations. The Department of Student Life will lead this informative session.

12:00 noon
Lunch with Family Group

12:00 noon
Transfer Student Lunch, Decker Patio
Transfer Students come to the Patio (back of Welcome Center) to meet other transfer students. No meal ticket is required (rain: Decker Hall Breezeway).

1:30 p.m.
Academic Success, Byrum Hall
A panel of faculty will share their secrets of academic success with all incoming students.

2:30 p.m.
Community Tour
You and your family group will tour around the Anderson community to familiarize new students with places and services they will use while here at AU.

4-8 p.m.
Free Time & Dinner
Take some time to continue un-packing and organizing, or spend some time with new friends! Dinner will be in the Marketplace or Haven.

8 p.m.
Comedy in the Valley
Come to the valley to laugh a little... or possibly LOTS! AU grad and Comedian Cory Edwards will share his talent of making people laugh! (rain: Byrum Hall).

9:30 p.m.
Cosmic Bowling, East Side Lanes
One of AU students favorite weekend activities! Cost will include lane fees and shoes. Cost is $3.

Saturday, September 1

Family Group Meeting
Spend some time this morning with your Family Group.

10:45 a.m.
My Brother/My Sister, Byrum Hall
The offices of International Student Services, and Multicultural Student Services, will lead us in celebrating the diversity among the members of our campus.

Lunch with Family Group

Healthy Relationships, Byrum Hall
Jacquie Sellers-Womack, Director of Counseling Services, will discuss how to establish meaningful relationships and how to resolve conflicts.

3-7:30 p.m.

Gather for worship, and then join in the traditional Freshman Hike followed by a Square Dance in the Fine Arts Courtyard

Anderson Community Churches have planned an exciting evening for the new students in Reardon Auditorium. Come for a fun concert and other activities.

9:15 p.m.
Ice Cream Social and Karaoke, Marketplace.
Enjoy some ice cream and music! You and your friends can even take part in the singing!

Monday, September 3

10:30 a.m.
Service Projects, Helios Fountain.
Get to know more AU students while making the community a better place to live. Meet at the Helios fountain. Dress in work clothes.

3:30 p.m.
Labor Day Volleyball Tourney, Fine Arts Courtyard.
Come out and play in the Volleyball Tourney with your family group! Come hangout with your friends and enjoy the last day before classes!

4:45-7 p.m.
Campus Picnic, Fine Arts Courtyard.
Bring a blanket out for the annual Labor Day Picnic.

7:30 p.m.

Join the Open Door Worship Team to “top” off Orientation.
