Art majors have a ball at AU

Towering glass goblets. Ukrainian eggs. A vicious rubber duck. Visitors may find these things and more at “The Alchemists’ Ball,” a senior art exhibition open to the public at Anderson University’s Wilson Galleries. From April 6 to May 10, five graduating art students will present selections of work produced during their studies. Though the show features one student of glass and four students of graphic design, various forms of media ranging from a sculpture of leaves and chicken wire to posters developed with silkscreen and woodcut will be presented. Jason Knapp, the director of the Wilson Galleries, believes that "this semester's show is a blend of exotic elements- sort of like a good cup of coffee."

"The Alchemists' Ball" will have an opening reception on Sunday, April 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. The students will be publicly presenting their theses at 6:30 p.m. on both Monday, April 7 and Thursday, April 11. Visitors may enjoy refreshments and meet the artists during both events.

"At Anderson, art majors are sometimes given the reputation of being hermits," said Ginger Hartman, a graphic design major participating in the show. "The senior exhibition is our chance to come out of hiding in our studios and confirm that in some ways we are—but with good reason. You can't produce these kinds of things without vigorous study and work ethic."

Offering majors in fine arts studio, studio glass, graphic design, general studies in art and art education, Anderson University's Department of Art + Design teaches five of the more than 60 undergraduate and graduate programs that are offered at Anderson University. Established in 1917 by the Church of God, Anderson University is a private, four-year, Christian liberal arts institution of approximately 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students. The university offers graduate degrees in business, education and theology.
