The Anderson University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team recently announced the creation of SIFE Consulting and five area companies that SIFE Consulting will be assisting throughout the upcoming academic year. SIFE Consulting was launched this year as a part of the Lilly Endowment and Anderson University collaboration, INvision AU. The new program will serve as a complement to SIFE Education, which will continue to develop free enterprise and economic awareness throughout Madison County.
In December, 2003, Anderson University received a $750,000 grant from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment, Inc., to provide students more opportunities and incentives to keep them in Indiana upon graduation. The Anderson University proposal approved by the Endowment was entitled, "INvision AU." The grant comes from the Endowment's "Initiative to Promote Opportunity through Educational Collaborations."
The "INvision AU" proposal is an education-based collaboration among Anderson University and job-creating entities, contributing directly to Indiana's innovation capacity and to creating "knowledge jobs." The activities and initiatives are also intended to strengthen and extend programs and relationships that enable Anderson University graduates to find highly desirable jobs in Indiana.
The Endowment awarded grants to 37 Indiana colleges and universities totaling $38.9 million. Individual grant amounts were based on the number of students at each institution.
After aligning with the Corporation for Economic Development and the Flagship Enterprise Center, SIFE chose five up-and-coming companies, most of which are just beginning to expand after years of development.
SIFE Consulting will place five students per team with each of the following local companies: Airlift Services, Clarion Systems, JATECH Scientific, Nature's Emporium Soap Company, and Total Data Solutions.
"This is a great opportunity for the most enterprising of our students to step up for the benefit of all," says Mike Wiese, SIFE faculty advisor and professor of marketing at the Falls School of Business at AU. "SIFE Consulting is a way to get the best possible educational experience and to make a real difference in our local community," he continues.
SIFE is an international organization found on over 1,500 campuses in 37 countries. The organization exists to "change the world" by teaching important economical concepts relating to business and free enterprise. Students have been involved in SIFE at Anderson University for over 15 years.
