Fri, 2012-07-27 11:22 -- univcomm

Director of Church on the Street, Kurt Salierno, will be the featured guest on the AU campus, Jan. 25-27, during Impact Your World Week. The AU office of Spiritual Life and Counseling sponsors Impact Your World Week to offer students and the community an opportunity for worship and study with an off-campus speaker. Salierno entered into church ministry as a youth pastor, associate pastor and then a senior pastor. But even after 20 years in youth ministry, Salierno felt that he needed to focus his attention on ministry on the street. After being involved in street ministry in Portland, Phoenix and now in Atlanta, Georgia, Salierno works part time as a self-employed carpenter and as the director of Church on the Street.

Church On The Street provides "church" on the streets of Atlanta by preaching, feeding the poor and distributing clothing to those in need. The organization oversees a staff of several hundred volunteers every week who prepare and serve food, collect and pass out clothing and help in maintaining homeless shelters in Atlanta. Church on the Street "pastors" thousands of homeless people who depend on us for care and spiritual guidance.

Salierno grew up in Visalia, Calif., and attended Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon where he met his wife, Lori. Some time after marrying in 1982, the Salierno’s were both ordained in the Church of God in Anderson, Ind.

During his first year in college, Salierno went to the movies with some guys he met on a street corner in Portland and left the movie to walk back to campus because of the movie’s inappropriateness. While being lost in the big city, he then realized his calling and his passion was ministering to the homeless and poor after seeing many homeless people on the streets.
