Applying for Aid

Free Application for Federal Student Aid - FAFSA

Remember to file the FAFSA as early as you can but keep in mind the following:

  • You cannot file the FAFSA prior to January 1 for the school year which begins in September.
  • NEW: For Indiana Residents the FAFSA must be received by March 10. In the past your FAFSA was to have been filed by March 1.
  • Other state residents should refer to the FAFSA for your applicable state aid deadline. While most states do not allow for the transfer of state aid to out-of-state schools, it is best to keep your options open by meeting your state aid filing deadline.

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov. Filing your FAFSA electronically has never been easier!

Before completing the FAFSA online:
You will need a PIN number to be able to “sign” your FAFSA electronically.

Your PIN is also used to:

  • Check on the results of your processed FAFSA
  • Correct any errors or make changes to your FAFSA
  • Print a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR)

To apply for a PIN number go to www.pin.ed.gov. Remember both student and parent will need a PIN number. Your PIN number will be e-mailed to you (or mailed if you do not provide your e-mail address.)

If you file the FAFSA without first having a PIN number one will mailed or e-mailed to you. PIN numbers do not expire and can be used when filing for financial aid in future years. Make sure you remember your PIN number and don’t share it with anyone, even with persons offering to help you complete your FAFSA. Parents with multiple children applying for financial aid can use the same PIN for each child.

If you do not want to file online, FAFSA’s are available through your high school counselor, public library, or from AU’s Office of Student Financial Services.

Additional Information:
  • Anderson University’s Federal School Code:
You will need to use Anderson University’s Federal School Code of 001785 when completing the FAFSA. This authorizes AU to receive your FAFSA information.
  • Once you have filed your FAFSA:
You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) Information Acknowledgement once you have filed your FAFSA. If you provided your e-mail address you will receive an e-mail with a link to your SAR on the Web. The SAR will provide you with the results of your having filed the FAFSA. Once you receive your SAR you should:
    • Review all of your answers on your SAR and make sure they are correct especially if you initially used estimated income and tax information when completing the FAFSA. Corrections to the information can be made on the SAR.
    • Make sure the schools you want to receive your FAFSA information are listed. Use the SAR to add missing schools.
    • Note any additional or missing information that may be requested including notice that you have been selected for Verification.
  • Selected for Verification:
If your FAFSA has been selected for Verification (about 30% are) you will be required to provide the AU Office of Student Financial Services with copies of student and parents most recent federal income tax returns and complete a Verification Worksheet.

Verification Worksheets are available online. You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to download the following worksheets in PDF format.
