Dr. James Lewis
Associate Dean and Professor of Theology and Ethics
Anderson University's School of Theology
Dr. James W. Lewis, a disciple of Jesus Christ, seeks to live out the demands of the gospel in the world—although imperfectly. Central to this lifestyle of Christian discipleship is Jesus’ call to be peacemakers in the world. Upon his conversion to Christianity and participation in a local congregation, he has sensed a disconnect between what we Christians often say and do. His prayerful desire is to speak to this fundamental separation between confession and conduct in our lives with the courage, patience, and hope inspired by the Trinitarian God.
Experiencing shalom, God’s wholeness in all relationships, is a pervasive and guiding theme of his life. Dr. Lewis promotes the idea that the power of God’s truthful story of redemption has power to form our lives in more truthful, loving, and peaceful ways. He and his family worship at and are accountable to the Sherman Street Church of God, Anderson, Indiana.
James Lewis, a native of Houston, Texas, is married [for 35 years] to Barbara Kaye and is the father of two beautiful daughters [Andrea and Kimberli] and the grandfather of two equally beautiful granddaughters [Ameris and Nya]. Dr. Lewis received his B.S. degree in Mathematics and his M.B.A. degree in Finance from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. After completing a Certificate of Professional Accountancy in 1975 from Northwestern University, he passed and worked in Houston as a Certified Public Accountant [CPA] with a major international accounting firm. After becoming a Christian, James Lewis accepted a call to professional ministry, while working as a Corporate Internal Auditor for Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company. He and his family eventually traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, where he did M.DIV. studies [short of a degree] at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His desire to teach led him and his family to the state of North Carolina, where he began Ph.D. studies. In 1994, Dr. Lewis received his Ph.D. degree in Theology and Ethics from Duke University, under the mentorship of Dr. Stanley Hauerwas. His teaching career has spanned these sixteen years at Anderson University. His academic and faith interests include but are not limited to the relationship of Christianity to culture, issues of biblical forgiveness and reconciliation, and the moral and ethical implications of racism, ethnocentrism, etc. to Christian witness.
Currently, he serves as Associate Dean and Professor of Theology and Ethics at the Anderson University School of Theology, on the campus of Anderson University.
Dr. James Lewis maintains membership in several academic and professional societies, while serving on several community boards. He serves as an associate minister of his local congregation, where he loves "welcoming the stranger" or guests into the worship of God—a house of prayer for all people.
Dr. Lewis has written several articles and reviews in professional and other journals. He is a frequent speaker and workshop leader in academic settings, conventions, and churches throughout the Midwest and South.
