Disco, Dancing, and Donuts
Hundreds of students packed a local gym on a Friday night. Music was blaring, people were eating and pumped for the evening. However, this was no basketball game; instead it was the annual Disco, Dancing, and Donuts presented by the Campus Activities Board (CAB Office).
The event, which has happened each year at AU since 2001, was lucky just to occur. Friday, September 7 featured heavy rains throughout Anderson, and the dance was scheduled to be held outside at Brandon’s Coffeehouse. With the inclement weather, organizers decided to switch the location to the Mill Creek Civic Center in Chesterfield at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and a campus-wide email was sent out to notify students, Resident Directors, and Resident Assistants of the change. The hard work turned into a two hour disco party featuring some amazing costumes of the era.
For the record, the event had 39 dozen donuts for students to devour, 300 Kool-Aid bottles and an estimated 400 students crammed into the gym, making it a great way to kickoff the first weekend of the school year.
With all the fun, someone had to plan the event. The CAB Office, which sponsors many events happening on and off campus each year, appointed three "Cabbies," as they are called to put it all together right before the start of the school year. Seniors Erika Satterfield, a marketing communications major, and David Tabb, a business management major organized Disco, Dancing, and Donuts. Lindsay Harger, the RD of Mansfield and another "Cabbie," provided the staff support for the event.
Why is Disco, Dancing, and Donuts so successful? Satterfield explained, "It’s different and fun…unique." She added that "students really like the dancing and dress-up from a different era."
More exciting events such as A Taste of Anderson and a white water rafting trip to West Virginia are being planned this year with CAB to help connect the students and groups that form Anderson University.
