What happens to recyclable material?

The purpose of collecting recyclable material is to:

1. keep it out of the landfill,
2. reduce the need for mining or harvesting natural resources, and 
3. save energy by re-processing the material, which is usually less energy intensive than processing raw materials.
   

The process from collection through processing into new material has many steps that need to be completed efficiently.
