Plastic Processing
The recycling team uses a special open topped trailer to collect plastic and glass from campus locations. The workers empty the toters directly into the trailer and then return them to the pick up spot.At the end of the route, or when the trailer is full, the trailer is covered with a custom fitted tarp to prevent any material from blowing away. The trailer is taken to the Best Way transfer station located on Madison Avenue along the side of Interstate 69. At the station the plastic and glass is unloaded into over-the-road trucks which then transport it, along with recyclables collected from the City of Anderson, to a processing site in Muncie.
At the processing site the material is sorted by type of material (#1 through #7 plastic, and color of glass) and packaged for sale into the recycling marketplace.
