Dennis Kruse was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 2004 after serving 15 years in the Indiana House of Representatives.

Beth (Newberry) Backus BA, media specialist at Hamilton Southeastern Junior High School in Fishers, Ind., encouraged her students to participate in a read-a-thon to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research. One hundred eighty-seven students participated and raised more than $9,000. Beth was diagnosed with MS in 1993. The $9,000 raised included a matching donation from her and her husband. “I never dreamed the kids would raise so much money, so I hadn’t a clue that I would be contributing that much,” said Beth. “But it is for a cause that is very worthy and touches me directly.”

Ernie Peterson BA was the first recipient of the 2008 News-Journal West Volusia Sportsperson of the Quarter award. Peterson, who lives in DeLand, Fla., was honored for his volunteer work with Stetson University, the Olympics, and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Steve Barrett BA retired after a 21-year career as a federal criminal investigator, 20 years of which were as a special agent with the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of Inspector General, Defense Criminal Investigative Service. Too young to kick back and relax, Steve accepted an investigator position with the special investigations unit of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Steve, his wife, Cindy (Chase) Barrett BA ’76, and their daughter, Sarah, live in Cary, N.C. Their boys, Ryan and Cory, live in Portland, Ore., and Raleigh, N.C., respectively.

Gerald Chabot BA has been named superintendent of Lake County Schools in Indiana. For the previous six years, he served as superintendent of Blackford County Schools.

Cheryl (Wollum) Fowler AS married Michael Hamilton on April 4, 2008. Their wedding trip took them to South Carolina, Florida, and the Bahamas. Mike is the controller of Kapp Construction. Cheryl is leaving more than 20 years of cardiac nursing to transfer within her company to the Keifer Alternative School Ambulatory Clinic, serving underprivileged, emotionally and behaviorally challenged students and their families. They blend a family of three grown children — Zack (26) and Tiffany (24) Fowler, and Stephe (25) Hamilton.

Janet (McDuffie) Brown AA, BA ’78 — see The College, 1978.

Kristie Hillenburg BA moved from Massachusetts to Little River, S.C., in January of 2007. She says her happiest day was when she sold her snow blower. “The pace is a lot slower than New England. The first three months at work my boss kept telling me to slow down!” She loves the new pace, the weather, and the beach. “We sold our house just before the market turned. A year later my job was changing, and we decided to move south before retirement and I'm glad we did.” Kristie is working for Ebtron, Inc., which designs and manufactures thermal dispersion airflow measurement products. She works as the company’s systems administrator.

Kimberly Leach Johnson BS was named a 2008 Florida Super Lawyer by Law & Politics Media. Only five percent of Florida attorneys are included on the list. Kimberly is co-managing partner for Quarles & Brady’s Naples office and serves as Naples Office Chair for trusts & estates. She has extensive experience representing numerous families in the planning of their estates and handling their affairs after their demise.

Janet (McDuffie) Brown AA ’77, BA writes, “My uncle recruited me to Cincinnati to work with him and the Lord said yes! My husband’s job transferred him and the Lord gave us a home that included everything we always wanted. For me, a front porch, for my daughter, stairs, and for my husband, a two-door garage! Many changes have occurred since our move to Ohio in 1992, but what has not changed is God’s faithfulness; he continues to draw me to his word.”

Nancy (Neubacher) Hughes BA continues to use her administrative skills to serve nonprofit organizations both within and outside of the church community. She currently directs the St. Louis Poetry Center, a 60-year nonprofit serving poets and literacy issues for the St. Louis community. She continues to stay involved in the visual arts, her first love. She and Larry Hughes BA ’76 have two children — a daughter, Harper, and a son, John, who goes by Jake.

Janet Manley BA retired on disability in May 2005. She was inducted into the Hamilton City Schools Fine Arts Hall of Fame on April 5, 2008.

Danny Dodge recently signed with the Pursuit Channel on Direct TV channel 611 to produce 13 hunting shows that will air nationally. “As the producer/cameraman I shoot, edit, and host the show which follows real people on their hunts all across the United States and in Canada. The show began airing in July and runs through December. Next year the show will appear on two additional networks. This year I was awarded a Silver Telly for the production of a show that aired on the Versus Network. I would love to hear from my old AU friends, and perhaps we can film a hunt together. Me’Shae Brooks-Rolling BA and her husband, Dr. James H. Rolling, Jr., relocated to Syracuse University where James is the new chair of the Art Education Department, and Me’Shae is a senior administrator and director of special events and public relations at the Burton Blatt Institute. As the author of a book titled How To Save Money & Organize Your Finances, Me’Shae also teaches financial literacy at SU, in the community, and in churches.

Molly Dumbauld AA is a hairstylist in Carmel, Ind., and loves her job.

Jeffrey Hartman writes, “Five years ago I became the artistic director of New York Opera Singers Association and now just started the Boston Opera Singers Association. I sang for the Consulate of Italy and Coro Dante as a soloist in a chorus that was started by the Dante Society. I also finished singing a concert at Archer Mansion, which was a fund-raiser to help get me to Europe for an audition tour. I will be singing with Connecticut Lyric Opera when I return from Europe singing as the tenor soloist in Benjamin Britten’s “Cantata Misercordium” and “The Prodigal Son.” I will be singing the role of Alfredo in La Traviata with them as well. I made my Boston debut as Calaf in Puccini's Turandot, where I got rave reviews from audience and critics alike. Nichole “Nicci” Kelley BA writes, “Last year I bought my first home. In December, I finished a master’s degree in management at Indiana Wesleyan University.”

Larry Brownlee BA received Seattle Opera Company’s Artist of the Year award for his performance in I Puritani. On receiving the award, Larry wrote, “So many wonderful things have happened to me since leaving Seattle Opera, but it all started there. The sensation [of receiving this award] is very much like the call that I received about winning the Richard Tucker Award as the first African-American ever to do so. This honor is no less significant to me, but all the more gratifying because it comes from the people who supported me as a very ‘green’ young artist.”

Rebecca (Myers) Hollenbaugh BSN helped start an annual fund-raiser to benefit local cancer patients. The fund-raiser is called “Becca’s Love Run.” It is a 5K that has helped raise more than $15,000 the past two years. The third event is this month. Rob Knight and Greta (Garretson) Knight BA announce the birth of their daughter, Isabella Joy, on Nov. 27, 2006. Her middle name is in honor of Greta’s late roommate Sara Joy Rychener, also an AU alum.

Ryan Noel BA and Sarah (Lewis) Noel BA ‘01 announce the birth of their son, Simeon David, on July 23, 2008. Ryan and Sarah reside in Indianapolis where Ryan is senior art director at Borshoff and Sarah is special events director for the Indiana State Chapter of JDRF. They write, “Simeon is a precious gift from God, and we are thrilled to begin a new journey as parents!”

Natalie (Selinsky) Showalter BA and Ben Showalter ’99 write, “We are blessed to now have a baby girl — Gracen Sofia born March 7, 2008. Brothers Jackson and Noah are great helpers.”

Cara Rigel BA married Jim Morgan on March 31, 2007, in Lake Wales, Fla. Alumni in the wedding included Christa (Rigel) McCann BA ’98, Kami Schwerdtfeger BA, and Jennifer (Palmquist) Neibert BA. Cara and Jim live in Orlando, Fla., where she is an occupational therapist working in the school system and he is a landscape architect.

Jeff Whye BA married Monique Van Aken on June 21, 2008, in Arizona. Monique works as a nurse practitioner in Pasadena, Calif., while attending Fuller Theological Seminary along with Jeff. Brandon Farmer BA ‘02 was Jeff’s best man. Jim Gray BA ’99, Shawn Chadwell BA ’04, MDiv ’07, Adam Galema BA ’01, Jared Schuler BA ’02, Leif Nunneley BA ’02, Will Hullinger BA ’02, Chad Frank BA ’02, Ryan Bennison BA ’02, Erick Townsend BA ’99, and Luke Renner BA ’98 were also in the wedding. Jeff is on the leadership team at Pasadena Church with Kerwin Manning BA ’91 and works at Azusa Pacific University. He travels speaking to college and high school students around the country.

James Worley III announces the birth of a son, Jacob Elijah, on March 6, 2008. His daughter, Charlotte Anabelle, is 2.

Jennifer Cole BA married Andrew Klawiter on May 17, 2008, in Crown Point, Ind. They live in Hobart, Ind.

Christopher Matthews BA “After three years in the Catalina corporate headquarters in St. Petersburg, Fla., I took a promotion to regional client service manager in the New Jersey office. I graduated with an MBA from University of South Florida in July.”

Troy Loyd writes, “After baseball in 2003, I signed a minor league contract with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League. My wife, Jessica Rogers BA ’05, and I got married on September 16, 2006, and we have one dog, Sammie Boy Dog, who keeps us very busy.”

 

Nicole Miller BSN married Jesse Spear on May 30, 2008, in Indianapolis. Melissa Hyndman BSN ’03 was the maid of honor. Nicole writes, “My husband is a traveling physician, and I am a traveling nurse.” During the summer, they were on assignment in Denver, Colo., with plans to go to Honolulu in September for their next assignment.

Kandace (Businger) Johnson BSN and her husband, Michael, added Addison Kaylee to the family on May 19, 2008. She weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz. Addison’s two brothers, Noah, 10, and Brayden, 2, love their little sister a bunch. Kandace is employed in the ER at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Andrea (Hall) Vernola BA graduated with a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in December 2007. She is working as a reference librarian in a public library.

Erin (Sullivan) Warmbier BA and Matt Warmbier ’02 welcomed their first child, Aiven August, on May 18, 2008. He weighed 7 lbs. 2.5 oz. and was 20 1/2 inches long. Erin writes, “It looks like he’ll be as tall as his daddy and has his mom’s brown curly hair and dark eyes. We love being parents and feel so blessed!”

Eileen Mason BA graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry with a degree in dental hygiene. After moving to the north side of Indianapolis, Eileen has joyfully started her career as a licensed dental hygienist at Children’s Dentistry of Indianapolis.

Seth Price BM married Amy Hartzell BM ’07 on June 9, 2007. Seth is the band director for the East Gibson School Corp., and Amy is an elementary music and Spanish teacher in the North Spencer School Corp. Their address is 124 1/2 W. 5th St., Ferdinand, IN 47532 (near Jasper, Ind.).

Rachel Russell BA married Matt Preusz, a high school friend, on March 29, 2008. She continues to live and work in Indianapolis.

Megan Coffman BA writes, “I started my position at the Community Mental Health Council on June 30, 2008, as a case manager in Chicago.”

Mark Price BA was a recipient of an NCAA post-graduate scholarship in the amount of $7,500. Mark was a four-year letterwinner for Anderson University in the sport of track and field and graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Mark is attending medical school at Ohio State University.

Josh Taylor BA ’08 joined Borshoff as a graphic designer. During the summer of 2007, Josh was an intern in Borshoff’s creative department.

1972 - Frederick Clemens BA ’68, MDiv has retired from the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has completed 40 years of ministry and is still serving in the Alabama Conference. He and his wife, Becky, celebrated 25 years of marriage in August with a trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn. A reception was also held at the Latham United Methodist Church in Huntsville, Ala.

1975 - Tom Settlemyre BA ’64, MMin ’75 and Janice (Crabtree) Settlemyre ’64 retired from active pastoral ministry at West Court Street Church of God in Flint, Mich., on Dec. 31, 2007, and moved to 2519 Sandvalley Way in League City, Texas.

1979 - Rick DeWard MDiv has pastored six different churches since his graduation from seminary and directed nine summer youth camps. He is currently pastoring a multicultural congregation in central Phoenix. He and his wife will celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary in December. Last year, they celebrated their daughter Elizabeth’s marriage to Matthew Malloy.

1997 - Tammie Tregellas BA ’92, MA moved to Blantrye, Malawi. in February 2008 to be the first-ever Church of God missionary in this country. She is beginning a program to train pastors.
