Linda (Helvering) Barnes retired in 1999 from Anderson Community Schools, where she was a counselor at Highland High School. Her husband is retired from Delco Remy. Linda writes, “We have been to several of the World Conferences and have always enjoyed them. Going to all these countries makes the news much more personal and meaningful. I will never forget some of my college professors; they made a lasting impression on me.”

Robert “Bud” Stone BS lives in Lima, Ohio, and operates a nursery and landscaping business. He started the business with his son after a 20-year career with Marathon Oil. His wife, Mitzie, died in August 2000. They have three sons. Bud, who lettered in four sports at AU and was a charter member in the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame, had a chance last spring to reminisce about his high school basketball days in West Virginia with The Charleston Gazette.

David Luellen BS was recognized for “a lifetime of outstanding intellectual achievement, approved Christian character and the effective exercise of leadership gifts” by the faculty of Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, Ala. David graduated from Southeastern Bible College in 1958 before coming to AU. In May he was inducted into Delta Epsilon Chi, the honor society of The Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges. During the induction ceremony, David was recognized for his efforts with the Alabama Public Library Service Latino Task Force and the Shelby County Literacy Council. He travels internationally, leading workshops in language tutoring and teaching college classes in second language acquisition.

Glenna Beavers BS has been teaching in El Paso, Texas, for the past 23 years. She teaches fifth grade gifted/talented students. “It’s been a long career, but I guess I now have my second wind, so I keep puffing along,” she writes. She has taught in Wyoming, New Mexico, the Panama Canal Zone and Colorado. “It’s been an adventure, and I’ve enjoyed a lot of great experiences. I’ve never forgotten Anderson College and the wonderful contribution it made to my life.” Her e-mail address is rvbeav@aol.com. Nyle Kardatzke BS is head of the Sycamore School in Indianapolis. In May the school received a 2001 CyberStar Award for outstanding information technology in a secondary school. The school has 138 computers available to 430 students, with at least two computers per classroom and 24 computers in each of its computer labs. Students have access to laptops, laser printers, scanners, digital cameras, CD writers and the Web.

Charles Briscoe and Twila Briscoe BA ’67 have completed 16 years as pastors of the Covenant Community Church in Salem, Va. Under their encouragement, the congregation has grown from a fellowship of eight families to 150 families and built a new 12,000-square-foot facility that seats 400. Twila recently stepped down as the director of the “Week of the Child” for the 65 childcare centers and public schools of the Roanoke Valley. She held the position for 13 years while directing her own childcare center, which serves 150 children a day. Charlie was recently awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to high school athletics from the Virginia High School Coaching Association. For the past 32 years, he has served as an official for just about every type of athletic competition in the state. He has been the head announcer for the state track and field championships for 27 years. At the state dinner, Charlie shared, “These are wonderful awards of recognition, but you have to get old to receive them.” Twila and Charlie continue to coordinate the largest Church of God athletic event — the Interstate Softball Tournament held every Labor Day weekend. The event attracts 65 teams from 15 states, with more than 2,500 at the ball players’ worship service. Offerings and funds raised from this event are sent to Twila’s AU roommate, Tabitha Meier Kurrle BA ’66 and her husband, Martin, for their mission work in Paraguay.
Emily Johnson Ladner BA lives with her husband, Cornell, in Picayune, Miss. She is a special education teacher at Picayune High School. Emily writes, “On March 16, our youngest daughter, Chanda, 25, was killed in her home in Slidell, La. Robert Bernhardt BA and Joanna (Stowell) Bernhardt ’69 have been missionaries through the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention since 1981. They have been seconded to Trans World Radio to help develop the Caribbean Gospel Network and satellite radio network connecting Christian radio stations throughout the West Indies. Bob and Lowell Davidson BA were involved in establishing the AU campus radio station WAC in 1967.
Bette (Buckbee) Worcester BA is a member of the Oregon State Bar Board of Governors. She chairs her condominium association board. She adds, “I’ve been the regulatory process director at the Oregon Liquor Control Commission for several years and am the organist at Atkinson Memorial Church in Oregon City.”

Regina (Troutman) Snowden BA received the American Red Cross Clara Barton Award in March. Regina founded Partners for Youth with Disabilities more than 15 years ago and is the organization’s executive director.

eanie Smith McQuinn BA is a private piano teacher, the church pianist at Forest Hill Baptist Church and a songwriter for Big River Music. “I recently had a song called ‘Armor of God’ recorded by Shirley Caesar on her Grammy-winning CD You Can Make It,” Jeanie writes. Jeanie and her husband, Skip, own a recording studio and production company called World Media Services. “One of the many things our company does is design, install and staff church audio/video systems,” she explains. They have four children — Paula, January, Travis and Meredith. “God’s blessings to our family are too numerous to mention here,” she adds, “but we give God the glory for it all!”

Steven Barrett BA is a special agent with the United States Department of Defense, Office of Inspector General (OIG), Defense Criminal Investigative Service. He recently completed a five-month assignment to participate in and help manage the OIG’s investigation into allegations of criminal misconduct involving the United States Marines’ $30-billion MV-22 Osprey aircraft program. Lt. Col. Ron Todd BA is the deputy general counsel at the Defense Security and Cooperation Agency in Arlington, Va. He recently completed a three-year tour at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, Spain, where he served as the staff judge advocate/legal advisor to the Embassy.

Sue Ann Wilcox Duncan BA is enjoying two new careers. For many years, she was a stay-at-home mom, part-time ecumenical minister and substitute teacher. She now works as the postmaster relief for the United States Postal Service in Fillmore, Mo., which serves 250 people. “This job is only part time, mostly working Saturday mornings and being on-call when the regular postmaster has another obligation,” Sue Ann explains. She is also the nutrition education assistant in the Family Nutrition Education Program of the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension system. “I serve Buchanan County, which includes the city of St. Joseph. I teach nutrition in the public schools, which have high numbers of free and reduced lunches and food stamp recipients,” Sue Ann says. “I love this job! It takes all of the organizational, teaching and ministry skills I have acquired over the last several years.” Sue Ann is a single mom with three children — Carl, 15; Garth, 9; and Liza, 8. Dan Knispel BA was promoted to regional operations manager of ad sales for Comcast Cable. Based in Sarasota, Fla., Dan’s region includes Florida and parts of Alabama and Mississippi. Dan and Cindy (Beach) Knispel BA ’80 have been married 21 years and have four children from ages 10 to 18.
Annette (Irwin) Mattingly BA graduated with honors from the University of Indianapolis in May. She earned a degree in nursing and has received her Registered Nurse License. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing. She works in the women’s post-surgical unit at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Her husband, Jeff, owns an upholstery business with clients throughout central Indiana. Much of his work has been featured in Indianapolis Monthly magazine. They live in Indianapolis with their two children — Andy, 11, and Jacob, 6. “The boys love to play soccer and have won several academic awards,” Annette writes. The family attends East 91st St. Christian Church in Indianapolis. Lori (Watson) Brown BS has embarked on a new career. She taught elementary music in the public school system for 12 years. Answering a call to full-time ministry, she is now on staff at North Hills Church of God as the prayer coordinator. She lives in Arizona with her husband and three children.

Todd Reynolds BA was ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene in July. He was recently selected to chair an FBI scientific working group to set national standards for forensic firearms examiners. Melissa Miller Reynolds BA ’88 has held numerous jobs — “none more important than her current duties as mom and wife,” Todd writes. “She is using her art talents at the church where we are on staff as visitation pastors.” The family lives in Indiana.

Jeff Trammel BA is the pastor of The Master’s Bible Church in Prescott, Ariz. The church was planted Sept. 10, 2000. He and his wife, Ashlee, were married Oct. 3, 1998. They have a 1-year-old daughter, Paige Allison. Jeff graduated with a master’s degree from The Master’s Seminary in Sun Valley, Calif., in 1995. James Barnes BA and his wife, Sharon, celebrated their 11th anniversary in August. They live in Houston, where James is a senior public relations manager with Compaq Computer Corporation. Roger Hawkes BA has left his job with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pesticides and is working in the private sector. Late last year, he relocated from the Washington, D.C., area to the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, accepting a position as a toxicologist/risk assessor in the agricultural products division of the BASF Corporation. “BASF is a German-owned firm which is the largest chemical company in the world and the second largest agricultural products manufacturer worldwide,” Roger explains. “The work is great and there are lots of opportunities for travel, which I especially enjoy.” He has already spent a week in Germany, and when his job took him to Kansas City, Mo., he writes, “I hooked up for dinner with college buddies John Hatch BA ’90 and Beth (Freeland) Hatch BA ’89.”

Shannon (Grauman) Alvarez BA received a master’s degree in Spanish linguistics and pedagogy from Illinois State University in December 1999. While working on her degree, Shannon taught Spanish as a graduate assistant. She also realized her longtime dream of seeing Machu Picchu in Peru when she spent the 1998 fall semester studying in Lima. Since receiving her master’s degree, she has taught a few community Spanish courses. This fall she began working as an instructor at Monmouth College.

Kate Kramer BA and Joseph Jefferson welcomed twins Gentry Taylor and Olivia Rose on Feb. 28, 2000. Jenny (Yoder) Altstaetter and her husband, Dean, announce the birth of Annaleia Faith on March 22, 2001. “We miscarried our first child on March 22, 2000,” Jenny writes. “It was a very dark time for us, however, God was amazing through it. His presence was so obvious through his comfort and peace.” Jenny earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Ohio State University in 2000. She is currently working on her master’s degree and spending time with Annaleia. David teaches eighth-grade science at Centennial Junior High School and serves as the school’s technology supervisor. Richele teaches first grade at Fort Caspar Academy and is the technology supervisor there. Wade Barger BA recently made a career change from the airwaves of radio to airplanes. Patrick Bergquist BA received a fellowship from the Fund for Theological Education. He was one of 40 students entering theological education this fall to be selected. Patrick explains, “The students have to be under 27 years old and be recommended by their seminary, a faculty member at their present university and a member of the clergy. Next summer they are giving fellowships up to $5,000 to do ministry anywhere in the world.”

Don Dawson BA ’60, MDiv ’64 has retired after 11 years in the ministry and 25 years in the field of organization training and development. He lives in Huntington Beach, Calif., with his wife, Peggy, who is the assistant principal at Costa Mesa High School. Don’s son, Mark Dawson BA ’89, is producer and director for Covenant Productions at AU. His daughter, Janna, lives in Indianapolis with her husband, Jim Matthies, who is pastor of Midtown Vineyard Fellowship. Don and Peggy are members of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. Danny Posada MDiv ’79 and his wife, Linda, live in Redding, Calif. Danny pastored for 20 years, leading Church of God congregations in Virginia, Ontario, Florida and California. He is now the director of student support, registrar and an instructor at Simpson College, a Christian college with 1,300 students. “I have had the privilege of three promotions and most recently was voted by the students as ASPIRE Teacher of the Year for 2000-2001,” Danny writes. Linda is a drama teacher at a local Christian high school and writes plays and musicals. They have two sons — Brent, a student at Simpson College, and Timothy, a student at Azusa Pacific University. Den Slattery MA ’81, MDiv ’83 received his doctorate from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. Den is the senior pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ludington, Mich. He has four books now in print and is working on several other writing projects, including trying to get his dissertation published. He lives in Ludington with his wife, Karen, and their four children.
