The Rev. Geraldine Zehendner Ramey BTh 23 died May 25, 2007. She was 101 years old.
Ralph Helverson BA 37 died April 25, 2007. After his time at AU, Ralph studied at the divinity school at Northwestern University for three years and earned a masters degree in philosophy from Cornell University. He was later awarded an honorary doctorate from Meadville Divinity School at the University of Chicago. He worked in churches in Ithaca, N.Y., and Cambridge, Mass. Ralph had celebrated his 68th wedding anniversary on March 3, 2007, followed by his 95th birthday on March 23.
Nellie J. (Field) Snowden 44, DD 73 died June 2, 2007, in Anderson, Ind. She was an ordained minister and served several churches in Ohio, Alabama, and Indianapolis with her husband. She served as national president of Women of the Church of God, Inc., for 10 years and as executive secretary treasurer for 11 years. During her tenure, the first World Hunger Project was established and the first National Convention of Church of God Women was held in Louisville, Ky., in 1977. She retired in 1981 after 21 years of service. She was a member of Park Place Church of God. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Roscoe Snowden BTh 41, whom she married June 26, 1945, in Indianapolis; a son, Dr. Joe R. Snowden BA 69; one granddaughter and three stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary Evelyn (Meyer) Ivy 47 died April 4, 2007. She was born in Sweetwater, Texas, and graduated from high school there. She attended AU for three years, where she was a cheerleader. She married Glen Ivy, also from Sweetwater, and they enjoyed nearly 60 years together. Evelyn worked as a bank teller and a teacher before being assailed by lupus, which she had to fight for the next 55 years. She underwent reconstructive hand surgery to offset the ravages of lupus. She followed a rigorous regime of exercises to maintain her independence. Other drugs to help combat lupus made her deaf. But she still managed to convey a spirit of joy and hope that made her a delight to know. In addition to Glen, Evelyn is survived by a son, John Ivy, and two granddaughters.
Joseph Puchek Jr. BA 49 died April 18, 2007, while vacationing in Hawaii. Joe retired from teaching at Denver Public Schools and then served in ministry for 25 years on the island of Lanai, Hawaii. He and his wife, Ruth Owen Puchek BS 49, returned to Colorado in 1995, living in Parachute, Colo. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joseph Owen Puchek and Steven Owen Puchek; a sister, Eleanor Puchek Miller; and two grandchildren.
Velma M. Snyder BS 49 died May 7, 2007, at her home in Springfield, Ill. Velma was a vocal music teacher for 35 years in Indiana, retiring from Hammond Tech High School. She was a member of the Hammond Retired Teachers of Indiana and Illinois Association and the Hammond Retired Women Teachers Breakfast Club. She was a member of First Church of God in Springfield and in Munster, Ind., where she was the choir director for many years, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Keen-Agers Club. She published a book titled What's a Little Girl Like You Going to Do With All That Money? Survivors include a brother, Dick E. Snyder; a sister, Pearl (Snyder) Fuller 62; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Alfred Bud Cain BTh 50 died July 28, 2007, in Upper Marlboro, Md., following a short illness. His wife, Naomi Ethel Hunter Cain BS 46, had passed away the previous August.
Jackie (Simmons) Warters 50 died Feb. 8, 2007. She had suffered from leukemia since 2002.
Erna M. (Wesner) Henkelman 54 of St. Joseph, Mich., died May 28, 2007, at her home after a long battle with cancer. While attending Anderson University, she traveled with one of the first womens trios as accompanist, touring the Midwest, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. For more than 50 years, Erna Henkelman was the full-time volunteer organist at the First Church Of God in St. Joseph. Shortly before her passing, the church honored and celebrated her years of service to the Lord. Many local students benefited from Ernas talents when she taught both piano and organ. In fact, several of her students won music scholarships. She is survived by her husband, Norbert Henkelman, and her two sons, Doug and Dale Henkelman.
Adrian P. Shoemaker 56 died May 4, 2007, in Glendale, Ariz.
Dr. William J. Sinclair 57 died May 24, 2006, at his residence in Okemos, Mich. After obtaining a medical degree from the University of Michigan and completing a residency program at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Mich., Bill enjoyed a fulfilling practice in obstetrics and gynecology, delivering more than 7,000 babies before his retirement in September 2004. He is survived by his wife, Janet Sinclair; a son, Steven Sinclair; a daughter, Andrea Sinclair; and two grandchildren.
John David Shroades BS 62 passed away on Feb. 19, 2007, in Fresno, Calif., after surviving prostate cancer for seven years. He taught for the Fresno Unified School District for 29 years and after his retirement did substitute teaching for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sylvia (Harshbarger) Shroades 59; two children, John William Shroades and Lisa (Shroades) Lassley 84; and four grandchildren. He was a member of Riverpark Bible Church in Frenso.
Keren Eugenia Berrios, a 21-year-old international student at AU, died Aug. 5, 2007, as the result of a car accident. She was born in El Salvador. She is survived by her father, Francisco F. Berrios, and her mother, Martha E. Berrios, who are missionaries to Romania; and brother, Gerson D. Berrios, who also is a student at AU. While attending Anderson University, Keren was hosted by Scott and Laura Kiesel and their family.
