Carolyn (Upchurch) Adcock BA is a GED instructor for maximum-security male inmates at Pinellas County Jail in Largo, Fla. “This professional experience has been the highlight of my career as a teacher and has provided me the most fulfillment as a person,” Carolyn writes. “My prayer is that each of these men becomes aware that through God’s love, he can be forgiven, find peace, and become a contributing member of society.” The Dixie Hollins Adult Education Center for Pinellas County honored Carolyn by naming her “Teacher of the Year” last fall.

Gay Dawn Horne-Nelson BA retired as a lawyer in the office of the city attorney in Jackson, Miss., where she worked for 23 1/2 years. She married Darryl Freeman Nelson on June 30, 2003. They live in the Nashville, Tenn., area, where Darryl owns a video production company. Gay Dawn has obtained her license to practice law in Tennessee.

Malcolm Manners BA was awarded the Ben and Janice Wade Award for Excellence in Teach-ing last summer. He taught citrus and horticultural science for 23 years at Florida Southern College and is the John and Ruth Tyndall Professor of Citrus Science.
Don Thomas BA is the executive pastor of Sonrise Church in Auburn, Calif. Sonrise is a 1,300-member church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Don pastored the Lodi Community Church of God from 1983 to 1994. He then spent 7 1/2 years working in sales for Hewlett-Packard. His wife, Debbie (Fuller) Thomas, is the youth services manager for the Auburn Recreation District.

Kristie Hillenburg BA was promoted to graphic design supervisor at Globe Specialty Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Boston Globe and New York Times Company. She lives in Marlboro, Mass.
Nancy (Coolidge) Hook BA lives in Carmel, Ind., with her husband, John, a senior supervising program analyst, and their two sons, Jamie, a junior-high student, and Matthew, a sixth grader. She recently accepted an associate faculty position at the Indiana University School of Social Work on the IUPUI Campus. She began her teaching assignment in January.

John Pistole BA was named executive assistant director for counterterrorism and counter-intelligence by FBI Director Robert Mueller in December. Working for the FBI since 1983, John will now oversee the FBI’s top two priority programs and will report directly to Mueller.

Deborah Fausett Allison BA recently moved to Orange County, Calif., with her 11-year-old son, Shane. She was named district sales manager for Gunold USA, a commercial embroidery supplier.
John Maidlow BA is the president of Lehman’s Mechanical, a large family-owned mechanical contractor company, and has worked for AU on a number of projects, including the Wellness Center and renovations to Dunn Hall and Hartung Hall. His wife, Susan (Hepler) Maidlow BA ’77, recently retired from the U.S. Postal Service. The couple adopted a daughter, Kathryn Claire, from China in 1996.

Kenneth Johnson AS lives in Ellenwood, Ga., with his wife, Susan, and their two children, Kenny Jr., 15, and Justin, 6. He served in the U.S. military for 19 years in the field of medical logistics and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Medical Service Corp in January 2002.
Timothy Yoakum BA is working and recording with the Christian band Looking Up, based in Detroit, Mich. He is a keyboard player and vocalist. Susan (Rapp) Britton BA and her husband, Samuel, welcomed a son, Charlie, on July 12, 2003. His 3-year-old sister, Clara, is very protective of him and loves helping, Susan writes. She works part time from home as an education consultant and freelance science editor.
Anita Malbone BA married Paul Kline on Aug. 30, 2003. They operate a dairy and grain farm in Monterey, Ind. Anita works outside the home as a residential coordinator, serving adults with developmental disabilities.

Julie (Herrmann) Ellis has been married to John for 12 years. She has put her music career on hold to be a full-time mom to their children, Katelyn, 10, and Brandon, 8. However, she continues to sing at weddings and teach 20 or more music students. She had the chance to sing back-up for Michael Crawford at the United Center in Chicago. “My time now is spent on soccer games, swim meets, volunteering to teach art classes at my children’s school, and projects with our new home,” she writes. She works third shift at St. Francis Hospital in the radiology department as a C.T. tech assistant.

Katie (Abney) Goar BA and her husband, Steve, announce the birth of Asher Daniel in December 2002. He was welcomed by a brother, Isaac. They are restoring a historic home in downtown Anderson. Katie works for the City of Indianapolis as one of the youngest female directors of housing management in the city’s history. She teaches part time at Indiana University. Angela is assistant principal at Towne Meadow Elementary School in Carmel, Ind. She is an adjunct professor with Ball State University, leading a graduate transition-to-teaching program. Kyle Minor BA has been named editor of Frostproof Review, a literary journal based in central Florida. He teaches courses in American and English literature at Webber International University and Warner Southern College, and is working on a memoir incorporating the 1985 murder of a homeless Ojibwe under a West Palm Beach bridge.

Geoffrey Rotham BA earned a graduate degree in computer science at the University of Kentucky in 2000. He has lived in Kentucky for the past five years. He has directed a junior high choir of 70 kids, sung the “National Anthem” at minor league games, sung on the praise team at Southland Christian, and taken two of his USTA tennis teams to sectionals. Nathan Rodgers BA is finishing his second year as a volunteer teaching English in Voznesensk, a small town in southern Ukraine. “I have been able to help my school establish a Foreign Language Resource Center and expose my students to new concepts like creative writing and civics,” he says. He will extend his stay another year in Uzhgorod in western Ukrain and assist a non-governmental agency that works with gypsies.

Melissa Von Holle BA writes, “Since graduation, I stumbled into developing and managing affordable housing properties. I write grants, put together real estate developments, and oversee the management to maintain safe, quality housing for low-income families. Most of my free time is spent leading the youth group at my church and working with Habitat for Humanity. It keeps me really busy, but I love it.”

Noah Koontz BA is the database coordinator for the Minnetrista Foundation in Muncie. He is responsible for managing the fundraiser database software, processing and fulfilling memberships, and assisting in annual campaigns. He will travel to South Carolina this year for extensive training in database system management.
