Richard Burkhart is teaching computer applications two nights per week to help people upgrade their computer skills. He and his wife, Joyce, live in Escondido, Calif., 30 miles north of San Diego. “My wife enjoys being a grandmother to our seven grandchildren,” Richard says. “God is good and prayers are still being answered.”

Jacqueline (Monteith) Gross retired from the Douglas County School System in Georgia at the end of the 2003-04 school year. She then moved to Haiti to teach second grade at Quisqueya Christian School in Port au Prince. She returned to the states in June 2005 and is retired, living in Anderson, Ind.

Norma Lee (Peterson) Martin and her husband, Donald, moved in October from Florida to the United Methodist Retirement Community in Franklin, Ind. “We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary on Sept. 25 and went on a cruise to Hawaii,” she writes. “We are glad to be back home again in Indianapolis, closer to friends and family.”

Gloria (Eckelberry) McLaughlin moved from Palm Harbor, Fla., back to Ohio after her husband, Paul’s, sudden death. She writes, “I am presently living with my youngest son, Doug. I am working for my former boss in the nearby town of Salem, and will be moving in a few weeks to a small condo of my own in town.”

Ellen Stephens Rich BS retired from her job for Indianapolis Public Schools as a French/English teacher. She writes that she is enjoying her three daughters and their families. She is also active in the Downey Avenue Christian Church in Indianapolis, she tutors students with learning disabilities at the University of Indianapolis, and she conducts private cooking lessons.

Phyllis (Copher) Mattox is working at the University of Kentucky in the agricultural economics department. She is also attending classes part time, working toward a degree in horticulture. Phyllis has a grandson and an infant granddaughter.

Ann Livingstone (Gay Boggs) BA recently joined the staff of the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre in Ontario as the director of research and learning development. The Pearson Centre is an internationally known research, education, and training institute focused on global peace and security.
Herschel McDivitt became the director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas in September 2005. He and his wife Linda (Leonard) McDivitt BA live in Indianapolis.

Catina (Abrell) Wilson BA met her husband, Jack, while working as a mountain guide in Colorado and New Mexico. They moved to Florida when their sons were born, and Tina was a stay-at-home mom until they were in high school. She then went back to school to earn a law degree and worked as an assistant public defender with both adults and juveniles. Tina helped establish a teen court and a drug court in Florida, and she is currently the chair of the Santa Rosa County Juvenile Justice Council and the vice chair of the Juvenile Justice Circuit Board.

Holly (Hoke) Renz AS was named the Person of the Year for 2005 by the Anderson, Ind., Herald Bulletin. Holly was cited for her tireless work with sexual assault victims in Madison County. She is an ER nurse at Community Hospital, where she began volunteering 25 years ago when rape and sexual assault victims were brought into the facility. She is credited for greatly influencing the formation of the Madison County Sexual Abuse Treatment Center in 1998, which is part of the Women’s Center at Community Hospital.

Mark Detwiler BA is an information technology professional at Bebe Stores, Inc., a women’s fashion retail company. He works out of both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Suzanne (Tefft) Detwiler BA ’79 is a medical technologist and works at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Torrance, Calif.
Kristie Hillenburg BA works as the design supervisor for Globe Specialty Products, a member of Boston Globe Media, that designs and prints advertising inserts for the Boston Globe and other regional newspapers, as well as a variety of other print media. For fun, Kristie enjoys visiting her post and beam camp on Mount Glastenbury in Vermont, where she hikes and rides ATVs in the summer and snowshoes in the winter.

Beverly (Tarr) Pahlisch BA is the owner/vice president of Pahlisch Homes, based in Oregon. Her company won five Best of Show for 2005 Tour of Homes awards, including a $4.5 million home.

Brian Tinker BA and his wife, Kris, live in Nevada where Brian works as an instructor at The Art Institute of Las Vegas. He was recently elected to the board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Las Vegas Chapter. He also developed a program for Education Management Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pa., offering an associate’s degree in digital image production.

Sheryl Pethers BA was recently elected to the bench in Chicago, Ill., where she serves on the Circuit Court of Cook County. She had previously worked as a journalist and lawyer for several years. Kelly Fair BA and Suze (Robbins) Fair BA ’87 reside in Fort Wayne, Ind., where Suze serves as director of expression and communication at Fellowship Missionary Church, a large multicultural, multi-generational church on the city’s south side. Kelly serves as an executive coach with Moellering Management Company, one of the nation’s leading coaching firms specializing in individual and organizational transformation. He is also an adjunct instructor at Taylor University Fort Wayne. The couple have three children, Ben, 13; Katie, 11; and Mackenzie, 7.
Angela (Rigel) Flickema BA and Bryan Flickema BA ’82 recently moved just one mile away from their previous home in Illinois. Bryan is employed by Family Christian Stores in Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Angela homeschools their younger two children and works part time as a sales representative. “We continue to stay active with our church and in music, with our children being involved in the Elgin Children’s Choir and Bartlett High School Band and Jazz Ensemble,” Angela writes.

Heather (Williams) Caudill BA and her husband, Kelly, welcomed their second child home in August. Kieran James was born five weeks early and spent the first eight days of his life in the NICU at St. Vincent’s in Indianapolis. He was welcomed home by his very excited sister, Kiersten, then 14 months old. Heather reports that as Christmas approached, Kieran was doing very well and had a completely clean bill of health. Michael Conrad BA just joined the management team at Anchor Bancorp in Minnesota as the manager of loan review. He has three children: Brenna, 9; Cailin, 4; and Alayna, 1.
Richard Hayhurst opened a wellness company in 2001 called Body Biz, Inc., which supports people through different modalities of massage therapy and bodywork, managing issues in stress and chronic pain. Richard also writes that he has created a new school called College of Touch Technologies for training massage therapists, bodyworkers, and wellness practitioners.
Laryssa Solms married Jeffrey Ziolkowski on Oct. 15, 2005, in Upland Ind. Alumni at the wedding included Christa (Fuller) Hylton BA ’92 as the matron of honor and Brian Howell BA ’90 as a groomsman. Charles “Tony” Taylor BA was promoted from captain to major in the United States Army on March 14, 2005. Tony first enlisted in the Army in 1983. He served as an infantryman and attained the rank of sergeant. When he was discharged at the end of his service, he came to AU, graduating with a degree in management and accounting. He then re-entered the Army and went to Officer’s Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., graduating in 1994. He is currently assigned to the U.S. Army Finance Command as the Department of the Army Banking Officer in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Charles Bush BA writes that after Hurricane Ivan ripped through the Cayman Islands, they are still working to get back to normal. “Some, like me, have recovered quickly,” he writes. “Others still lack roofs and homes. God has been a source of strength during this time. On Oct. 30, I was confirmed at St. George’s Anglican Church in Grand Cayman, and was pleased to have my family and friends there to witness my recommitment to Christ. This year I won the National Short Story Competition and was also recently awarded second prize in the National Playwriting Competition for my entry A Buried Secret.” He is currently working on a collection of short stories.
Jane (Ayris) Germany and her husband, Brian, announce the arrival of their second child, Grayson James, on July 21, 2005. “Big sister Liza thinks he is the greatest thing on earth right now,” Jane writes.
Tammy Roberts BA married Ernie Stubblefield on Oct. 23, 2004. Alumni Shan Bryan-Hanson BA ’94 and Christy (Evans) Mckenzie BA ’94 were in the wedding. Tammy was also hired last fall as a full-time professor of voice at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo., and she is a featured soloist with the Springfield Mid-America Singers. She played a supporting role with the Springfield Regional Opera in February 2006.
Christy (Hernbloom) Zielke BA and Brian Zielke ’93 announce the birth of Zachary Aleksander, born Aug. 16, 2005. “After losing our daughter last year, we decided to name him Zachary, meaning ‘God has remembered,’” Christy writes. “We are living in Germany where Brian works for Sun Microsystems. Karyl is the vice president of travel marketing at Development Counsellors International in New York, N.Y. Her husband is the director of on-air systems at NBC Universal. Upon return from their honeymoon safari in South Africa, the couple settled in the suburban town of Larchmont, N.Y.

Ben Davis BA and Marlo (Cookston) Davis BA live in Eaton, Ohio, with their daughter, Jillian. Marlo was recently named executive director of Eaton-Preble County Chamber of Commerce. She also is a consultant for nonprofit organizations with Heather (Brown) Beatty BA ’94. Through their involvement with World Hope International, Heather and Marlo traveled to Sierra Leone, Africa, to help with infrastructure development. Kimberly (Barlow) Grindean BA and Colby Grindean BA live in Indianapolis where Colby is a youth pastor and Kim is a preschool teacher at Shepherd Community. They adopted their daughter, Adia, on Sept. 30, 2004. “She is such a blessing to everyone she meets, and a gift to us all,” Kim writes.
Andrew Middleton BA and his wife, Staci, announce the birth of their son, Elijah David, on Oct. 5, 2005. Andrew writes, “He is an amazing blessing and he has been enthusiastically welcomed by Rilie and Bosely, our big English Mastiff puppies.”
Kyle Minor BA won honorable mentions in the 2005 Atlantic Monthly Contest in both the fiction and poetry categories. This is the first time in the history of the contest that anyone has been honored in two categories. Kyle also won second place for nonfiction in last year’s contest. He is in his second of a three-year teaching fellowship at the Ohio State University, where he is completing an MFA in creative writing. He is also completing work on a novel, a memoir, and a book of poems, excerpts from which have appeared regularly in several literary journals, including The Antioch Review, Quarterly West, Carolina Quarterly, and River Teeth. Kyle lives in Upper Arlington, Ohio, with his wife, Debbie, and their 2-year-old son, Ian.

Tanya Navarro BA writes that since graduation, she has been very busing working to help others. She has been director of social services in a nursing home in Greenfield, Ind., and a student services specialist in an elementary school in Pendleton, Ind. Currently, Tanya is working as a victim’s advocate for the Madison County Prosecutor’s office. She also works part time as director of programs of the Floricanto Latino Center of Anderson.

Katie (Marsh) Blackburn BA and Scott Blackburn BA ’99 announce the birth of their first child, Griffin Michael, on June 14, 2005. “He is an awesome little boy with his daddy’s good looks and his mommy’s stubborn streak,” says Katie. “We are blessed!” Katie and Scott moved to the greater Cincinnati area after she received her Master of Arts degree from Ball State in 2004. Scott is an account manager for Hobsons, Inc., and Katie is a part-time communications consultant for TriHealth, Inc.
Kristina (Gustafson) Brown BSN and Blaine Brown BA announce the birth of Bransen Anderson on Dec. 30, 2005. Blaine was promoted to the director of engineering at Video Images. Kristina received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Ball State University last spring.

Kami (Hines) Propst BA and Patrick Propst BA ’00 announce the birth of their son, Asher Michael, on July 15, 2005. He joins his sister, Jada Flory, 2. The couple serves at a church in Noblesville, Ind., and would love to hear from any friends in the area.
Myndie Turner BA has lived in Iowa City, Iowa, since graduating from AU. She is a part-time preschool teacher with a classroom of 3- to 5-year-olds. She has another job in a group home working with four men with disabilities. “I really love my work and feel that God has blessed me with these opportunities,” she writes. “I do miss my old friends from AU and wish that I didn’t live so far away from them all.”
Amanda Wright BA married Brad Wackler in June 2004. She teaches sixth grade and is the head coach of the high school boys’ track team. She and her husband live in the country near Laura, Ohio. “We are too busy for children right now,” Amanda writes, “but hope to start a family in the next few years.”

Jessica (Schmidt) Gebbink BA received a master’s degree in social work in December from the University in Illinois, followed by her state license. She is a social worker at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill., a level 1 trauma center. Renee Matthews and Brendon Matthews BA bought a house in Edgewood and write that they are both enjoying the challenge of raising two beautiful girls, Clara Hope, 3, and Olivia Renee, 1. Brendon works as a loan officer for Madison Community Bank in Pendleton, Ind. Renee stays home with their children during the day and works part time as an assistant manager at Pier One Imports in Anderson.

They announce the birth of their daughter, Signe Amber Paige, born Aug. 26, 2005. “She is beautiful and the love of our lives,” Justin writes. Jessica (Kingsbury) Daughtery BA returned to AU’s Teach for Indiana Program (T.I.P.) and is now teaching third grade at Fall Creek Elementary in Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Travis Daughtery BA ’02 is in his second year at Tipton High School teaching English and serving as the head coach for varsity boys’ basketball.

Rebecca Moses BA married Juan Pozo-Olano on Jan. 7, 2006, at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, in Washington, D.C. Rebecca is the entertainment editor for the Culpeper Star-Exponent. Juan owns three Gold’s Gyms.
Meghan Ramming BA married John Howard of Middletown, Ohio, on July 9, 2005. Alumni in the wedding included Sue (Wood) Anderson ’03, Alisha Roland BA, and Ardath Miller BA ’01. Megan received her master’s degree in Christian education from the United Methodist Theological School in Ohio and is the new director of Christian education at First United Methodist Church in Middletown.
Brooke Randolph BA completed her master’s degree at Ball State University through the Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services. She is now working as a therapist with Cummins Behavioral Health Systems, Inc., in Indianapolis.
Ron Sargent Jr. BA credits his graduation from AU to his wife, Erin. He writes, “When I met my wife, I was not in school and still had more than two years left to get my degree. She provided me with the motivation to go back and finish. She also gave me the extra push to give my life to the Lord …. Just last year I was baptized and received my first communion. The Lord has blessed me with many wonderful things, and I am truly grateful.” Ron and Erin were married in May 2005 and recently bought their first house. Ron works for the state of Michigan, investigating child abuse and neglect cases, and Erin works as a nurse. They ask for prayers as they look to start a family.

Faith Canoy Gallian BA moved to Lake Wales, Fla., to be an admissions counselor at Warner Southern College.
Maryann Koopman BA has been the film and research coordinator at the Heartland Film Festival in downtown Indianapolis for nearly two years. She is also a part-time barista at the Starbucks in the Conseco Fieldhouse and a freelance writer. She is actively involved at East 91st Street Christian Church in Castleton, working with the children’s ministries and getting connected with other women and young adult Bible studies. She lives alone in a small Art Deco apartment in downtown Indy. She writes, “I currently spend so much time helping all my other AU friends get married, I have not had the time to find a spouse of my own!”

1962 - William Earl Henshaw BA ’51, MDiv and Helen (Hamlin) Henshaw BA ’49 lost their son, John Richard Henshaw, to cancer on Dec. 19, 2005. John passed away in Macon, Ga. He was the father of five children.
1989 - Gleason Haskett MDiv was named Chaplain of the Year by the Indiana Department of Correction because of his leadership in developing the “Faith and Character” based housing unit at the Correctional Industrial Facility, where Gleason has worked for the past 17 years.

Donelle (Perry) Sokolov BA ’93, MA and her husband, Vadim, bought their first house in Portland, Ore., in October. Donelle is taking Russian classes and working at an elementary school as an assistant teaching English as a second language. The couple’s new address is 4121 SE Lee Anna Way, Portland, OR 97236. 2000 - Andreas Krenz MDiv married Sarah Schedler in Braunschweig, Germany, on Aug. 27, 2005. He has been an associate pastor for youth and young adults at the Church of God Braunschweig for more than three years.
