Remembering our friends
Lester C. Hardacre died May 12, 2001, in Anderson, Ind. In 1994, the university presented him with the first Heritage Award, an honor presented annually to friends of the university. He worked for the family business, East Side Jersey Dairy, from 1916 to 1978 and served on its board of directors. In April, on one of his last visits, he attended the dedication of Hardacre Hall at AU. Funeral services were held at Park Place Church of God in Anderson, with the Rev. Donald Collins officiating.
Dr. Elaine J. Harper, Professor Emeritus of English, died May 1, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Anderson, Ind., after an extended illness. She taught at Anderson University from 1950 to 1985. In addition to her English classes, she taught an introductory course in humanities. She is survived by close friends, Sharel and Ralph Marcum, and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted at East Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson with Pastor Brad Brizendine officiating.
The Rev. Wanda Lee (Davis) Clausen 44 died March 27, 2001. The funeral service was held in Okland City, Ind., with the Rev. Dale Landis providing the message.
The Rev. Lilburn L.H. Gilliam BA 56, MDiv 58 died Feb. 27, 2001, in Anderson, Ind., following an extended illness. He was a chaplain in the Civil Air Patrol at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., from 1963-1965. He was the founding pastor at the First Church of God in Palm Beach Gardens. He also pastored the Pendleton, Ind., Church of God for three years in the late 1970s. He earned a masters degree in education from Ball State University. In 1987 he retired from his positions as teacher and counselor at Highland High School. In 1991 he retired as a Church of God minister and served as pastor of Mount Pleasant Community Church for several years. He is survived by two sons, the Rev. L. Michael Gilliam BA 78 and A. Scott Gilliam; a daughter, Diana (Gilliam) Gray BA 86; two brothers, Ed Ray Gilliam and Manson Gilliam; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held at Park Place Church of God in Anderson, Ind., with the Revs. Donald Collins and Harold Edwards officiating.
Rana Hamilton BS 94 died March 21, 2001, in Anderson, Ind., after an extended illness. Rana had been employed by Central Indiana Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. She attended East Side Church of God in Anderson. She is survived by her parents, Homer and Wilena (Blair) Hamilton; two sisters, Robin (Hamilton) Fogle BA 91 and Rebecca (Hamilton) Smith BA 93; her grandmothers, Wilma Blair and Myrtle Hamilton; two nephews, Daniel and Nathan Fogle; a niece, Emily Smith; aunts and uncles, the Rev. Joseph Blair BA 65, MDiv 68, Gloria (Blair) Bowman BA 67, Paul Blair, Joyce (Blair) Brattain 68, Glenda (Blair) LePage BA 72, Amelda (Blair) Callender BA 73, David Blair BA 74, MA 82, Conley Hamilton, Shirley Lattimore, James Hamilton, and Betty Johnson; and several cousins. Funeral services were held in Anderson, with the Revs. Kerry Robinson and Mary Ann Randolph officiating.
