Class of 1944       Top of page

Margaurette (Allen) Upshaw BTh retired from her work in pre-school administration in 1986, but she continues to work with pre-schoolers through CASA, the YWCA and child abuse prevention organizations. Margaurette and Edwin "Bus" Upshaw BTh '45 sold their construction business in 1988, but they continue to receive calls. "Complete retirement is beyond the foreseeable future," they write. Bus also uses his expertise in construction for Christian service. For 24 years, he led the construction portion of student work camps through AU's Campus Ministries program. In January they joined Maurice and Dondeena (Fleenor) Caldwell BA '49 and 10 AU students on a Tri-S trip to Chepen, Peru. Together they worked at the Daniel S. Warner School. Ministry and construction projects have taken the Upshaws to Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Guatamala and Costa Rica. When they are not traveling, Margaurette and Bus make their home in Anderson, Ind.

After retiring from full-time pastoral work, Curtis Lee BA founded a company that now owns two assisted-living communities - one in Paducah, Ky., and the other in Madisonville, Ky. Curtis met his wife on the AU campus in 1995. "Martha and I were married in the School of Theology chapel in 1996 by Arlene Hall. We were introduced by Jan BA '48 and Jerry Elston '48. The alumni network works!" Curtis and Martha divide their time among homes in Kentucky, Alabama and Florida.

James "Dick" Altman lives in Florida. He writes, "I really enjoyed my time at AU from 1953 to 1958. I played football and baseball for Anderson University, and I made many friends."

Dr. David Luellen BS has been tapped by The University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School to direct Project ACCESS, a federally funded program providing educational opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse students through professional development of school system personnel and higher education faculty. For more than 40 years, David taught in secondary schools and universities in Vietnam, Laos, China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United States. As part of The University of Alabama's Latin America program, he has taught second language acquisition and methodology in Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia and Peru. In March he traveled to Paraguay to teach a graduate course and present to the opening session of Paraguay Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Darrell Walling BS is a real estate consultant for Rose & Womble Realty in Newport News, Va. In 2000 he was selected from 475 agents as Rose & Womble's Top Agent for Excellence in Service. In 2001 he was the Top Peninsula Listing and Sales Agent.

Dr. Linda Baker-Lawrence BA is the director of alumni and placement for Schiller International University, which has eight campuses in six countries. "It is a very exciting venture," Linda writes. In addition, she has "accepted the temporary challenge of developing marketing concepts for the Florida English Language Institute."

Ruth Elizabeth (Okenfuss) Underhill earned her bachelor's degree in education in 1975 and has taken courses toward a master's degree in international affairs. After teaching and working in advertising and public relations, she is studying to become a nurse practitioner. She hopes to combine her knowledge of complementary medicine with the latest science and medical technology in her practice. She will start clinical rotations in the fall. Her daughter, Heidi, will be a junior at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Ruth's husband teaches Russian history at Washington University. He is also the American editor for a German journal of history.

Don Luckett BA is employed with Regent, Inc., a custom home building company in the Northern Virginia area. Betsy Ross Luckett '71 is an enrollment specialist at George Mason University School of Law. "Anderson University holds a very special place in our hearts since we met and married at Anderson," Don writes. "Then while attending AU, both of our sons met and married their wives. We hope to someday see our grandchildren carry on the family tradition!" Don and Betsy live in Centreville, Va.

Linda (Buck) Middleton BA teaches Spanish at Genoa Christian School in Westerville, Ohio, where her daughter, Sarah, just completed the fifth grade.

Ernie Peterson BA was one of 20,000 volunteers at the 2002 Olympic games in Salt Lake City. Approximately 70,000 people applied for volunteer positions at the games. The two-week assignment involved checking visitors' credentials and assisting the National Guard at weapons security checks. Back home in Florida, Peterson is the special projects coordinator in the Property Appraiser's Office in Volusia County.

Marguerite "Peg" (Garasic) Dean is a child and adolescent psychotherapist for Behavioral Health Services at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She also has a private business, training therapists to lead children's therapy groups and family bonding workshops using the expressive arts therapy process. She lives in Monterey, Calif.

Marilyn (McHarg) Davidson BA is the curriculum coordinator for the Kodiak Island Borough School District in Kodiak, Alaska, and serves as the education partner for the school district in the Partners in Education Program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. Marilyn works with a committee from the Alaska State Council on the Arts to develop an Arts Consortium for the state. She directs the choir at Community Baptist Church in Kodiak and is the mother of two sons - Chaven, 10, and Mitchell, 9. Her husband, Kim, is a business owner and entrepreneur in Kodiak.

teve Elliott BA attended an education conference in Paris Feb. 14-18. He also enjoyed touring the city. Steve lives in Port Orange, Fla.

Cindi Ross Knepper is still married to her high school sweetheart. They live in Warsaw, Ind., where Cindi is the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Kosciusko. Their daughters, Autumn and April, are in college. William Jr. attends Warsaw High School. "I still love to wear my bright orange letter jacket," she writes.

Pauline (Lane) Koch BA began working at Azusa Pacific University in December. She is the secretary for three departments - the Center for Institutional Assessment, Continuing Education and Distance Learning, and Faculty Development.

Cindy (Hudnall) Holby BA has written her first novel. Chase the Wind, published by Dor-chester Publishing, will be released in October. It is a historical romance that follows three generations from 1838 to 1860. It is the first book in a four-part series.

Kris (Coyne) Cisney BA married Lyle Haines Jan. 5, 2002. As the director of the Berne (Ind.) Chamber of Commerce, she is responsible for planning the town festival, Swiss Days. She is the mother of Josh, 14; Corey, 12; and Kylie, 9; and stepmother to Eric, 19; Natalie, 15; and Ben, 14. The family lives in Berne.

Joseph Heeter BA is the vice president and corporate counsel for Sky Financial Solutions in Columbus, Ohio. He lives in Grove City, Ohio.

Jay Kroft BA received his doctorate of ministry in April after completing his dissertation on "Building Authentic Christian Community in the Local Church." He accepted a pastorate at the Church of God in Eureka, Mont., where he and Monica (Parsons) Kroft BA now live with their two sons, Lincoln and Zakkery.

Donald Wayne Wright BA, wife Pam, and two sons, Shane (12) and Ethan (8), moved into their new home in Atlanta in March. "I continue to run my own ministry-centered graphic design business, serving churches and not-for-profit ministry organizations," Donald writes. "I am now in my seventh year of operating this venture, and God has really blessed my decision to focus my business exclusively on building His Kingdom. We have fallen in love with Atlanta, which is home to a large number of mega-churches and many ministry organizations. We enjoy our Southern life."

After teaching science for 14 years, Tim Coppess BA accepted the position of chemistry product manager with Frey Scientific, a science supply division of School Specialty. Tim is responsible for the entire chemistry and earth science aspects of the company and instructs teachers nationwide on instructional techniques and how to promote student achievement of educational standards. The family has relocated to Mansfield, Ohio. Joy (Williams) Coppess AA '80, BA '80 teaches the kindergarten through first grade Sunday school class and substitute teaches at a couple of local preschools. Their son, Jake, is a sophomore and the first chair baritone in the highest level of the concert band. Their younger son, Josh, is first chair trombone in the seventh grade band. Both boys are active in the youth group and Bible studies at Ontario Middle School and High School. The family attends First Church of God in Mansfield, Ohio, with several college friends. Tom Little BA was promoted to executive therapeutic specialist for Glaxo Smith Kline Pharmaceuticals. He works with the cardiology division at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He also trains new representatives at the company's world headquarters in Philadelphia. He owns and drives a Legends Series race car in open wheel division in the southeastern United States. He writes that his son, Tyler, "looks like a future Raven football star."

Melanie (Snowberger) Schenck BA writes, "After spending the past six years in Hawaii, we have relocated to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. I am a staff accountant at Eglin Federal Credit Union and a mom to Christie, 5, and Katie, 3."

Mike Smith BA taught elementary and middle school for 13 years. He then served 2 1/2 years as a missionary overseas with Youth With A Mission and Mercy Ships. He is now the assistant principal at a middle school in Fredericksburg, Va.

Melanie Lain Musser and her husband, Keith, announce the birth of Abigail Anna on Oct. 18, 2001. Melanie writes, "For the past five years, I have been professor of social work at AU, and Keith is an electrical and computer engineering consultant." The family lives in Anderson, Ind.

Kevin Pitts BA is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois. He was appointed a 2001-02 Beckman Fellow in the Center for Advance Study at the university. He earned both his master of science degree and his doctorate from the University of Oregon. He spent four years in a post-doctoral assignment at the Fermi National Science Laboratory outside of Chicago. He will continue his research work at Fermi. Jim Armbruster BA is a Middletown, Ohio, city commissioner. He was elected to two terms, served one year as vice mayor and two years as mayor. Middletown has a population of 57,000.

Brad Priday BA and Jennifer (Dean) Priday BA live in Sikeston, Mo., where they both work for Sikeston Public Schools. Jennifer teaches fourth grade and Brad is the food service director. Leslie (Krieg) Fatheree BA lives in Crowell, Texas, with her husband, Brian, and their four children - Hannah, 11; Megan, 8; Scott, 4; and Matthew, 3. Brian pastors Faith Family Tabernacle. Leslie is the church worship leader and teaches private piano and voice. She also homeschools their children.

Karen Johnson BA lives in Virginia Beach, Va., with her husband, Ralph Gee, and 6-year-old daughter, Haley. Karen earned a master's degree in psychology and counseling from Regent University in 1992. She works full time at Bon-Secours EAP as a therapist and workplace consultant. Ralph is a school principal. "Haley is our joy," Karen writes. She is looking for her classmates and would love to hear from them.

Melinda (Botkin) Reynolds and her husband, Mark, welcomed their third daughter, Corinne Elise, on May 13, 2001. The family lives in Parker City, Ind.

Cami (Freed) Schaubroeck BA and her husband, Shawn, announce the adoption of Abby Mei Hope from Jiangxi Province, China. She was adopted Jan. 14, 2002, two weeks shy of her first birthday. Shawn and Cami traveled to China to bring Abby to the United States. Abby was welcomed home by two sisters - Emily Grace, 9, and Allison Faith, 7. Daniel Combs BA and Angela Clark Combs BA welcomed a son, Luke William, on April 13, 2002. They have a daughter, Micah. Dan is a flight surgeon in the Navy and is stationed in New Orleans. Angie is a stay-at-home mom.

Marc Etchison BA and Beth (Stewart) Etchison BA announce the arrival of their first child, Evan Theodore, on Jan. 18, 2002. Marc works in the ITS department at AU and is one of the coaches for the football team. Beth is a behavior specialist for Anderson Community Schools.

Bonnie Badger Neeley BA married Allen Klein Feb. 2, 2002. "We have known each other for 43 years," Bonnie writes. She had been working in a neonatal intensive care unit in Albany, Ga., as a licensed social worker. After her marriage, she relocated to Burdett, Kan., where Allen is a rancher.

Heather Tadlock Bartlow BA received her master of divinity degree from Iliff School of Theology in Denver in June 2001. She lives in Sheridan, Wyo., with her husband, Justin, and 1-year-old son, Jeremy. She is the associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan.

Hector Belardo BA is involved in youth ministry. He had the pleasure of singing backup for Pamplin artist Nikki Leonti and Word artist Barry Blaze. He recently returned from a medical missions trip to Columbia. Hector works as a registered nurse in Nashville, Tenn., in the cardiac, intensive care and emergency units. Megan (Drennan) Taylor BA and her husband, Brian, announce the birth of Gracie Marie on Sept. 14, 2001. The family lives in Ohio.

Robin Welty BA has joined with Grassroots Music Distribution. They will be marketing her new CD Imagine Yourself Forgiven and placing it in bookstores across the nation. In February, Robin traveled to Seoul, Korea, where she led worship music for a women's conference and performed for American troops stationed there.

Jennifer Bricker BA graduated with a master's degree in sports psychology from the University of Memphis in May. She is the assistant athletic trainer and a teacher at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Graham Lee Clark BA married Jenny Murto on July 14, 2001. Tracy Horrell BA served as an usher. Graham teaches physical education and health at Edgewood Middle School in Warsaw, Ind. Jenny teaches social studies at Middlebury Community Schools in Middlebury, Ind. They live in Goshen, Ind.

Kim (Helvey) Drewes BA and her husband, Steve, announce the birth of Dylan Stephen on Nov. 18, 2001.

Tricia Harrison BA teaches third grade and is the director of the after school care program at Liberty Christian School in Anderson, Ind. She and her husband, Gary, adopted their two youngest sons, Zachary and Thomas, in 1999.

Tricia (Leatherman) Miller BA and her husband, Jay, announce the birth of Madalynne Nicole on March 14, 2001. The family has moved to Goshen, Ind., where Jay practices law and Tricia is a rehabilitation technician at Goshen General Hospital.

Jill (Lengacher) Crumbacher BA received her MBA from AU in June 2001. She and Bradley Crumbacher '95 welcomed their first child, Anna Elizabeth, on Oct. 17, 2001. Alicia (Merrill) Allamena BA has moved to the Lancaster, Pa., area with her husband, Titus, and baby daughter, Michaela Grace. She is the marketing manager for High Concrete Structures, the nation's leader in precast parking garages. The company grossed $111 million in sales last year. She is also the product manager of the accessories division in charge of new product development.

Jim Gray BA and Kendra (Cauldwell) Gray BA '98 live in Stevensville, Mich., with their 22-month-old son, Dylan. "He's walking all over the place," Jim writes. Jim is working on a master's degree in ministry and hopes to graduate in December. Matthew Kettlebar BA is a biology teacher at Westfield High School and is a coach for the varsity football and track teams. He lives in Carmel, Ind.

Kimberly Young BA married Trent Ward Jan. 5, 2002. Kimberly writes, "We will temporarily make our home in Anderson while Trent finishes school at AU. We will then move back to Oklahoma, where both of our families live."

Stephen Branstutter BA is the music minister at Bethel Tabernacle Church of God in Kokomo, Ind. He's had some success as a songwriter and is continuing his evangelism work.

Breea Burtch BA is a Foley artist at a post-production facility in Los Angeles. Breea explains that a Foley artist makes the lives sounds put to movies. "I have worked on three films submitted to film festivals across the country," she adds.

Terri Kendall BA moved to Fremont, Ind. She is an Americorps VISTA at a crisis pregnancy center in Orland, Ind.

Shayla McKinney BA married Domingo Sauceda in Bremen, Ind., Sept. 29, 2001. Alumni in the wedding included Christen Manke BA, Stephanie Millhouse BA and Meghan Britton BA. Shayla and Domingo live in Indianapolis. She is the program director for Adept/Voca working with mentally disabled individuals. Her e-mail address is shayla_sauceda@hotmail.com.

Stacy Melnik BA teaches fourth grade in Charlotte, N.C. "I love it here and have learned so much since graduating," Stacy writes.

Katherine Paschal BA moved to Manila, Philippines, in October with the Navigators collegiate ministry. She will be there ministering to college students until April. "It's been quite a change from central Indiana to the metropolis of Manila, but I really like it," she writes. "I'm being stretched in ways I never imagined."

San Miguel Tejada BA is a Web developer in Indianapolis. He appreciates AU for preparing him to "go into such a challenging world and make a positive Christian impact in other people's lives."

Bronwen Thomas BA received a job offer the same day she received her diploma at AU. Bronwen is a human resource assistant with Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Basil "Buzz" Ballard BA '66, MDiv '69 retired in 1994 after 25 years as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. He is a member of the board of directors of the Southeast Virginia Alzheimer's Association and a member of the American Academy of Ministers. He and his wife, Grace Ann, have been happily married for 42 years.

Dale M. Marsh MDiv '72 has written four books since retiring from the U.S. Army Reserves and the Department of Veterans Affairs: A Liberating Life from Silence, The Facilitator, A Matter of Convenience and Jesus' Authority Over Bread of Life. He also rewrote his old sermons, representing 52 Sundays for three years. His books and sermons are shelved in the AU library. "I hope students, faculty and the supporting staff members will read them," he writes. "For those who prefer, my Web site (www.martusministry.com) has these items to read at your own will and time." Dale, who studied drawing and painting as an undergraduate student, is now painting during his retirement.

John Johnson BA '80, MDiv '85 has published a book of Christmas stories through Warner Press. Christmas Tapestry is illustrated by his 13-year-old son, Will. John and Gwen Plough Johnson BA '79 also have a daughter, Jonni, who plans to attend AU in 2003.

Kevin Niles BA '84, MDiv '93 completed his first year of teaching music at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Bloomington, Ill. The school has 300 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. "What a ministry to these children and youth," Kevin writes. "We're hoping to break ground on a new school building this spring that will help us continue to grow through the 12th grade within four years." Kevin is also involved in the singles ministry and music ministry at East White Oak Bible Church, where he serves as a worship leader, worship team vocalist and choir member, and plays the keyboards and piano. "I really enjoy living close to my sister, Brenda Dean AA '85, her husband, John Dean BA '86, and their five wonderful kids," he writes. "They bring me a lot of sunshine and laughter!
