Dr. Kenneth Crose BTh ’37, BTh ’38 died May 5, 2007, in Anderson, Ind. He was born Dec. 26, 1915, in San Diego, Calif., and had resided in Anderson since 1966. Dr. Crose was a minister, a missionary, and a professor of history and government at Anderson University. He retired in 1981. He was a member of Park Place Church of God. Survivors include three sons, K. Douglas Crose BA ’69, Richard Crose BA ’70, and David Crose; two daughters, Dr. Ruth Riportella-Crose BA ’72 and Barbara (Crose) Risinger AS ’75; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mabel L. (Fedor) Crose BA ’42, who died Feb. 24, 2007.
Eileen McKelvey Schield ’37 died May 29, 2007, in Waverly, Iowa. Eileen studied mathematics at AU. It was here that she met her future husband, Wilbur Schield, at a musical program they were both performing in. On March 25, 1939, the couple was united in marriage in the Park Place Church of God by Eileen’s grandfather, Alexander Thomas (A.T.) Rowe. The couple made their home in Anderson until 1943 when they moved to Waverly, where Wilbur and his brother Vern started the Schield Bantam Company. The couple continued a strong, lifelong relationship with the Church of God and Anderson University. Eileen is survived by her husband, Wilbur Schield ’34, LLD ’69; their four sons, Milo Schield, Marlo Schield, Marshall Schield, Michael Schield; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Bob Mong and Larry Mong.
Mary (Livingston) Brown ’38 died April 1, 2007, in Anderson, Ind. At the age of 7, her family moved to Anderson, where she graduated from Anderson High School in 1936 and was active in music, playing for the Anderson High School orchestra and Glee Clubs. She attended Anderson University in 1937 and 1938. She married Alfred E. Brown on Nov. 12, 1937, at Park Place Church of God. Survivors include two sons, Donald A. Brown BS ’61 and the Rev. Thomas E. Brown BA ’70; a brother, John D.; five grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
James C. Trimble BA ’43 died March 2, 2007, surrounded by his loving family and his pastor, Bryan Fulwider. Besides AU, he also held degrees from Oberlin College and Hartford Theological Seminary. As an ordained Congregational United Church of Christ minister, he pastored churches in Ohio, Kansas, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, and at the First United Church of Christ in Orlando, Fla. After 27 years of church ministry, he was called to work in the mental health field at Orange Memorial Hospital (now Orlando Regional Healthcare System). He worked there for 17 years until his retirement in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Agnes (Adams) Trimble BS ’43, to whom he was married 65 years; three daughters, Mary, Nancy, and Jane; his brother, Ralph; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leona (Tussey) Bocan BS ’46 died Dec. 27, 2006, in Yucaipa, Calif., following a long battle with end-stage Parkinson’s disease.
Eileen Daugherty BS ’46 died April 22, 2007, at Community Hospital in Anderson, Ind., after an extended illness. Before her retirement, she had been employed by Anderson University School of Theology as library staff.
Genevieve (Brown) Smith BA ’49 died April 26, 2007. She was living in Anderson, Ind., at the time of her death. She was a teacher and substitute teacher, as well as homemaker and secretary for her husband’s engineering business. She was a member of Park Place Church of God. Survivors include her husband, Harold E. Smith, whom she married June 20, 1948; two children, Gary Smith and Carol Creuziger; three grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Brown.
Ruth McQuinn BS ’50 died Nov. 15, 2006, in Middletown, Ohio. Ruth earned her master’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1960. She taught school in Oklahoma for 14 years before returning to Middletown in 1964, where she taught at Oneida and Wildwood schools. Ruth retired from teaching in 1980 after 30 years in the classroom. She had also worked at Armco Central Office for nine and a half years. She was a member of Breiel Blvd. Church of God. Ruth worked in two mission workcamps in Lima and Peru. She volunteered at both Willow Knoll and Mt. Pleasant Nursing Homes. She is survived by a half-sister, Marie Collier; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including her caretaker, Sophie Howard.
John Shroades BS ’62 died Feb. 19, 2007. He was living in California at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Harshbarger) Shroades ’59; a son, Johnny Schroades; and a daughter, Lisa (Shroades) Lassley ’84.
The Rev. Terry L. Adams ’69 died Nov. 24, 2006, in Simpson, La. He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Carol Adams; three sons, Terry “T.J.” Adams ’92, John Adams ’92, and Scott Adams; and four grandchildren.
Denton Fair died March 30, 2007, after a brief illness. He had resided in Anderson, Ind., for 27 years. He worked for 23 years for Corning Glass Works. He was controller for eight and a half years for the Foreign Missions Board and pastor at East Side Church of God in Muskogee, Okla., for six years. He had also worked in the Development Office of AU from 1989 to the present. He had been a member of Park Place Church of God. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Aline (Thomas) Fair, whom he married Aug. 30, 1938, in Muskogee, Okla.; a son, Phil M. Fair BS ’61; two grandchildren, Kelly Scott Fair BA ’86, MDiv ’93 and Lori Beth (Fair) Layugan BA ’87; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
