Remembering our friends

The Rev. Alfred E. Brown BTh '40, BA '41 died Aug. 9, 2001, at his home in Naples, Fla. An ordained Church of God pastor, he worked in pastoral ministry for 31 years, serving churches in Canada, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio and Colorado. He then became the executive secretary of the Church of God in Ohio until his retirement in 1980. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Livingston) Brown '38; two sons, Donald Brown BS '61 and the Rev. Thomas E. Brown BA '70; two brothers, Donald and Robert Brown; and five grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Vera V. Edwards died Nov. 3, 2001, at Community Hospital in Anderson, Ind., following an extended illness. She was born in Wheeling, W. Va., and had been an Anderson resident since 1989. She was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother who devoted her life to her family and the church. She was a member of Park Place Church of God, Mount Pleasant Community Church in Daleville and Women of the Church of God. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, the Rev. J. Harold Edwards; four children, Carolyn (Edwards) Yoder BS '64, Anderson University President James L. Edwards BA '65, MDiv '70, David M. Edwards BA '67 and Robert E. Edwards BA '67, MDiv '72; and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. William "Bill" Hill MA '76 died Aug. 17, 2001. At the time of his death, he was blessed to be surrounded by his wife, Julia, their children and close friends. He lived in Crossville, Tenn.

Dr. Hillery C. Rice BTh '42 died Nov. 15,2001, in Anderson, Ind., at age 94 following a lengthy illness. Rice was raised in Texas and western Oklahoma. He was working in department store sales when he decided to move his family to Anderson and prepare for a career in ministry. He pastored in West Virginia, Florida and at Park Place Church of God in Anderson before retiring in 1972. In 1975, AU hired Rice as director of scholarship development. Until June 2000, Rice traveled around the country raising funds for the university. Rice is survived by his wife of 70 years, Pauline Osterling Rice '42; daughter, Carolyn Kay Rice '67 of Louisville, Ky.; and brother, Herschell Rice BTh '42 of Pomona, Calif. Funeral services were conducted at Park Place Church of God with Drs. Oral Withrow, David Markle and James Edwards officiating. Dr. Robert Reardon officiated at the graveside service at East Maplewood Cemetery.
