John Blackburn MBA '96 died Nov. 4, 2002, in Anderson, Ind., after a sudden illness. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned the Purple Heart. He earned his undergraduate degree from Tri-State University. He was an engineer for Delco Remy America for 30 years. He was an active member of Bethany Christian Church and an assistant Scoutmaster and committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 240. He participated in nine mission trips to Juarez, Mexico, to build homes for the homeless with Bethany Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Janet (Williams) Blackburn, whom he married June 15, 1968; mother, Mary Jo (Bruce) Blackburn of Anderson; a daughter, Joy Blackburn BA '98; a son, Scottie Blackburn; and two brothers, Jerry Blackburn and Jeff Blackburn.
William C. Bryant MDiv '93 died Oct. 15, 2002, in a plane crash. He was the pastor of the First Church of God in Mt. Sterling, Ky. Survivors include his wife, Tina (Donathen) Bryant BA '89, and their 8-year-old son, Clint.
Dorothy (Bryant) Hazen BS '43 died April 28, 2002, from pneumonia. While a student at AU, she served as an assistant to music professors Cecil Hartselle and Henry Clausen. She was accompanist for the touring choir and a charter member of Camarada. She was married to Bob Hazen BTh '50 for 59 years. Upon retiring as head of the music department at Gardner College, she was awarded emerita status.
The Rev. Raymond Miller '38 died Sept. 27, 2002, in Anderson, Ind. He was a Church of God pastor for 56 years, leading congregations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois and Arkansas. He completed short-term mission assignments in Antigua, the Cayman Islands and Barbados. In Illinois, he served as chairman of the General Assembly of the Church of God and executive secretary. For 17 years, he served as adult senior minister for the Church of God in Titusville, Fla. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nelda (Settlemyre) Miller '38; three daughters, Joyce Elliott, Carol Hefner BA '65 and Marian Mossman '69; and six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Purnie (Hagen) Spaulding BTh '27 died Oct. 8, 2002, in Cisco, Texas. She was 100 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Watson Spaulding, who died in 1956. She is survived by her son, Robert.
The Rev. Jerry Stout BA '71 died Oct. 8, 2002, of a heart attack. He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army. At the time of his death, he pastored at Berne Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne, Ind. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Doris; two sons, Stephen and Michael; and one daughter, Robin Egly.
