Barrows moves on

Anderson University head football coach Steve Barrows resigned his post Dec. 16 to accept the defensive coordinator position at Charleston Southern College in Charleston, S.C. Charleston Southern College is a Div. I-AA school that competes in the Big South Conference.

Barrows came to AU in 1999. Over four seasons, he compiled a 21-19 record with the Ravens and in 2001 guided the school to its first conference championship in eight years. AU finished the 2002 season 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the HCAC for second place behind Hanover.

Over his final three seasons, Barrows’ record was 19-11, including back-to-back winning seasons in 2001-02. Barrows is the fifth most successful coach in AU history.

“Coach Barrows has brought significant leadership to the Ravens football program and has gained the admiration of both the players and the campus community,” said Dr. James L. Edwards, president of AU. “We will greatly miss him and his family as a part of our community yet wish him well in his new assignment.”

Barrows said he will miss the relationships he has formed at AU and will always be grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Raven head football coach.

“I have loved being head coach here,” expressed Barrows. “I have given everything I could to this program the last four years. I love this place and this program, and I think it’s in better shape than when I got here.”
