Anna (Ratzlaff) Thompson BTh ’25, BTh ’28 died Oct. 6, 2004, at age 102. She was one of AU’s oldest living alumni. She passed away in Union City, Ga. She was a retired ordained Church of God minister and a member of Clearview Chapel. Survivors include two daughters, Betty (Thompson) Cummings BS ’63 and Maxine (Thompson) Miller BS ’52; a son, Edgar Thompson; a brother, Walter Ratzlaff; and nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Edgar A. Thompson Sr.
June Doris Johnson ’48 of Dunedin, Fla., died Oct. 12, 2004. She was born in Minneapolis and moved to Florida when she retired from teaching elementary school. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Clearwater, Fla. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, the Rev. Robert Johnson; two sons, Tom Johnson and Paul Johnson; two daughters, Jane Tombers and Carol DeRusha; two brothers, Randall Quam and the Rev. Glenn Quam BTh ’57; and six grandchildren.
The Rev. Charles Hawkins BA ’53, MDiv ’58 died Oct. 31, 2004, following an extended illness. Survivors include his wife, Ann Hawkins; one son, Charles Hawkins ’84; one daughter, Shawn Del Hansen. Funeral services were held in Lansing, Mich.
Carolyn Beckner Phillips BA ’65 of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Aug. 13, 2004. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, the Rev. Melvin R. Phillips; four children, Ann Hershman, the Rev. Ruth E. Phillips BA ’71, Ralph Phillips, and the Rev. Beth Hennessy; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Carolyn earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and taught in Anderson, Ind., and Jamestown, N.Y. In Fort Wayne, she was director of The Learning Tree Daycare Center and teacher’s assistant at Harrison Hill Elementary. She also served with her husband as co-chaplain at Towne House Retirement Community for 14 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Dr. Terry M. Saltsman BA ’80 of Anderson, Ind., died Sept. 15, 2004, as a result of an aircraft accident. He was born in Bath, N.Y., and grew up in Transfer, Pa. At AU, he was a four-year letterman in baseball and graduated with honors. He graduated from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1984. He completed a one-year residency in Baltimore and then settled in Wellsville, N.Y., where he practiced medicine for more than four years. He moved back to Anderson in 1990 and was the owner of Saltsman Foot and Ankle Center with offices in Anderson and Elwood. He was a member of Wesley Free Methodist Church in Anderson and was an avid hunter, fisherman, artist, and loved the outdoors, flying, skiing, baseball, and basketball. He is survived by his two children Ashley and Andrew Saltsman, who live with their mother, Sharon (Pickens) Tighe BA 82; his mother, the Rev. Lois M. Saltsman; one sister, Chris Wilson; a step-mother, Lucy Saltsman; a step-brother David; two step-sisters Donna and Darlene; and a niece. Marsha (McKenzie) Richardson BA ’82 of Anderson, Ind., died Aug. 22, 2004. She was a lifetime resident of Anderson and worked as an administrator with St. John’s Medical Center. She was a member of South Meridian Church of God. She is survived by her husband, Douglas Richardson; a son, Adam Richardson; a daughter, Amanda Buck; her mother, Louise McKenzie; a sister, Diana Whitener; a brother, Charlie McKenzie BA ’83; and two grandchildren.
Marjorie “Maggie” Williams BA ’91 died June 12, 2004, following three months of illness. She was born in Illinois and spent most of her life there, raising a daughter, Heather (Williams) Caudill BA ’91, and working as a registered nurse with Catepillar Tractor Company. She moved to Indiana in 1987 to attend Anderson University with her daughter and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in ceramics. She was involved in many charitable projects and organizations throughout her lifetime, but spent the last few years working with the Madison County AIDS Task Force/Positive Action Alliance providing prevention education and testing. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a granddaughter, Kiersten Marie Caudill.
