Henry Staggs retired from Rock Creek Church of God, Bessemer, Ala., in September 2006. Henry began his ministry at age 16 at the Welcome Home Church of God in Quitman, La. He and his wife, Carolyn, will be returning home to Quitman to enjoy retirement with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Logan Sprunger BA and Nitaleen (Roy) Sprunger ’55 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 1, 2006, with family in their home near Satanta, Kan., by renewing their wedding vows with the Rev. Fred Hauck II ’86 officiating.

Ron Arnold continued his work in ministry after he left Anderson. He then moved on to special police work. For the last 16 years, he has led security at United Missionary Baptist Church in Ohio. He writes, “I am 71 years young and still love going to my job, watching over and protecting the saints.”

Vernon Wilson BA recalled some fond memories of Old Main after seeing a photo in the summer 2006 issue of Signatures. During his senior year, he worked as a janitor for Old Main, the old gym, and other buildings on campus. He remembers hanging out those upper story windows of Old Main to clean the outside of the glass. One of his last jobs as janitor was to help bolt down the seats in the Warner dome. After two decades of teaching, Vernon retired early to care for his father, Marion Wilson, who died in 2000. Vernon is the proud grandfather of four. Christina (Ericson) Lovin has completed her first volume of poetry, titled What We Burned for Warmth. The collection features her sonnet, “Coal Country,” winner of the 2006 Passager Poetry Prize and the 2005 Betty Gabehart Prize for Poetry. It also features poems first published in such journals as the Harvard Summer Review, Hunger Mountain, Diner, and other periodicals and anthologies. Daryl Smith BA retired last summer after 36 years in public education. He taught for 16 years and was a school principal for 20 years. In July, Daryl became the executive director of the Economic Development Corporation in Carrol County, Ind. He and his wife, Marsha, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in June. They live in Monticello, Ind. Marsha works at Wells Fargo Bank in Monticello. Their son, Brady, is the manager of a sign company in Lafayette, Ind. Their daughter, Valarie, is a supervisor for Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta.

Penny (Thoma) Culver received her Doctor of Education degree on Mother’s Day 2006 from Kent State University. She specialized her degree in school counseling. She graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. Penny lives in Warren, Ohio, with her husband, George.
Rita Crowder Meador BA retired last summer after 32 years in the field of education. She taught special education students in grades kindergarten through eight for 21 years in Lafayette, Tenn. She then supervised the special education program for Macon County, Tenn., for 11 years before retiring. Rita writes, “The Lord really blessed me with a wonderful career of serving students with disabilities and also with being ready to leave that career. I am now enjoying spending more time with my husband, Ferrell, and with my parents, who are both in their 90s and living nearby. During my transition and respite, I am enjoying flower and vegetable gardening, remodeling our house, and supervising the neighborhood skunks, opossums, and raccoons.”

Risë (Wood) Singer BA and her husband, David, recently moved to Frostproof, Fla., which is now their permanent home. Risë realized a lifetime dream in 2005 when she made her first CD, titled Risë Sings Her Favorites. Since then she has performed concerts in several states and is enjoying her new singing career. Risë and David travel extensively in their motor home and are thoroughly enjoying their retirement.

Paul D. Sinclair BA was awarded the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award for excellence in teaching, for encouragement of his students, and his dedication to their academic success. Paul has taught for 30 years, the last 15 at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis.

Jana (Withrow) Bennett BA has taught special education in Hawaii for 17 years. In the past year, she decided to work with special education preschoolers. “I love it,” she writes. “They keep getting younger, and I keep getting older. Although, they keep me young in spirit.” Both of her sons are in college in Bend, Ore., and Spokane, Wash. “I work three jobs so I can afford their education habits, of which I am extremely proud.”

Christine Evans-Klock BA was awarded a doctorate in economics from Boston University in 2005. She works for the United Nations International Labor Organization, recently completing a three-year stint as director for East Asia in Bangkok, Thailand. She, husband John Evans-Klock BA ’76, and 15-year-olds Cory and Jasper recently returned to Geneva, Switzerland, where Chris is director of the Skills Development and Employability Department. Fred Pieper BA returned to the island of Grand Cayman for a two-week vacation. He first visited the island with a group of students from the Tri-S program in January 1978. He remembered that the local newspaper took a picture of the AU students gathered around the bus. He visited the newspaper office and was able to obtain a digital copy of that picture. Brenda Starr works in a new school that her daughters attend. She was asked to fill in as a sub for the special needs class. “I co-taught that day with another assistant, and it was fun. The kids were very cooperative, and I enjoyed it. I have never been asked to sub before, so this meant a lot to me,” Brenda writes.

Kimberly Tutewiler BA married Greg Burtsfield at The Crossroad Church in Decatur, Ind. “My best friend from college, Wanda Anderson BA ’82, was able to attend,” Kimberly writes. Dan Hypes BA was recently named the CEO of LifePlan Financial Group, Inc, an independent advisory firm which he co-founded in Dayton, Ohio, in 1989. He has been in the financial services industry for more than 20 years. He and his wife, Angie, live in Bellbrook, Ohio, and are the proud parents of one daughter, Caroline, and two sons, Nate and Josh.

Lori (Hickerson) Carrell BA is on sabbatical for the 2006-07 academic year from her responsibilities as professor of communication at the University of Wisconsin. Her research focuses on sermon communication. Her previous work led to her publication of The Great American Sermon Survey (2000). Her sabbatical project, funded by a Lilly grant, seeks to increase the transformational impact of sermon communication on the lives of listeners. Suzanne Thurman BA is the chief operations officer of IPWatch Corporation, a company that manages intellectual property portfolios for its clients. Most of her work deals with trademarks, but she also works with patents and copyrights. She is making plans to sit for the patent agent exam at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Julie-Allyson Ieron BA released her 21st through 23rd books in 2006 — the Sisters in Faith Bible Studies series published by Wesleyan Publishing House. The first three series titles are Courageous Women in the Bible, Transformed Women in the Bible, and Sisters in the Bible. These join Julie’s four other bylined books and her various ghostwritten projects. Last year she worked with former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Adrian Rogers, and his wife, Joyce, in creating their ministry autobiography, Love Worth Finding. Julie is available as a conference speaker to women’s, church, and business groups across the United States. She is a mentor/master craftsman for the Jerry B. Blake Still is working for a development company that owns a multi-building medical park in Kennewick, Wash. He will be running a café/wine bar as part of his responsibilities in the near future.
Patricia “Trish” Sumner BA has moved to Charlotte, N.C. She has lived in Chicago for 12 years working as an office manager for Greenpeace and then as a technical recruiter for Dunn Solutions. She decided to change careers again and went back to school to become a registered nurse. As an RN, she works with high-risk pregnancies in the Women’s Center at Presbyterian Hospital. “I really love the weather,” she writes. “I am single with no children, but hope to have both someday.”

Jennifer (Cooper) Kauffman BA and Jeremy Kauffman BA ’97 welcomed their first child, Eleanor “Ellie” Jane, on Dec. 7, 2005. “Precious things come in small packages,” Jennifer writes. Ellie arrived three weeks early at 4 lbs., 4 oz. Jeremy is an accountant for Republic Airways (Chautauqua) in Indianapolis, and Jennifer works as an assistant at IBM Corporation in Indianapolis. They live in Anderson, Ind., and attend Cadiz Christian Church near New Castle, where Jeremy serves as sound technician and plays drums, and Jennifer is an accompanist.

Melanie (Eggleston) Harvey BA and Yarrow Harvey ’95 live in Kansas City, Kan., near Yarrow’s parents. They had their second child, Paxton Jack, in April 2005. That same month, they started an automotive repair business, Harvey Automotive. Yarrow has been fixing cars, and Melanie is teaching chemistry at the University of Saint Mary. They are involved in music at church, where Yarrow plays electric guitar and Melanie is the music leader.
Kim Underwood was been working in Christian radio, retail management, and ministry for 10 years. She is currently on staff with JOYFM and manages a store for Family Christian Stores. Marcus York BA starred in an episode of CSI: New York this past fall. The episode “Love Run Cold” aired Oct. 4. The show features regulars Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes. “It was pretty cool since it was the first time I was able to include my marathon racing chair in a primetime network show,” Marcus writes.

Randy Aukerman BA was hired in November 2005 as a police officer at AU. In July 2006, he completed the Campus Protection Officer’s Course at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. He attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy this fall. He also does volunteer video editing for Silent Blessings Deaf Ministries with Marshall Lawrence. He married Carrie Gordon on Oct. 21, 2006, at Maple Grove Church of God in Anderson, Ind. Carrie works at Hare Chevrolet in Noblesville in the Internet sales department. Candace Hargett BA married Andy Stephenson in August 2005. While in Nashville, she also had various marketing and sales positions. Candace now lives in Fishers, Ind. Andy is the leader of the Youth and Family Ministries of the Church of God for North America. Joyelle Schwarz BA flew to Latvia for three weeks during the summer to visit Kaylana (Halm) Miller BA ’99 and Nathan Miller BA ’99, and their daughter, Addienne. Nathan and Kaylana live in Riga, Latvia, and teach at the International School of Latvia. Together they traveled all over Latvia and Estonia and visited Stockholm, Sweden. “It was so wonderful to experience different cultures. I learned so much,” writes Joyelle. “By being with them, I was better able to see how people really live in Eastern Europe. I’m so grateful to have such good AU friends who showed me what life is like living abroad.”

Meghan Britton BA and her parents opened their own marketing and design company. Meghan works as the graphic designer, designing stationery, advertisements, and catalogs for a variety of companies in the gift industry. She writes, “It’s been a great experience.”

Kelly Hawkins graduated from Ball State University in 2003 with an associate’s degree in religious studies and education psychology. She has taken up Taekwondo and is working toward her first Dan Black. She is currently a red belt. She attends 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Megan Baccino BA married Ruben on June 11, 2005. Megan works as a Daybreak producer at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. They live in Noblesville and stay busy playing intramural sports and chasing their little dog, Shorty.
Matthew Cherry BA accepted the position of head varsity baseball coach at Fishers High School in Fishers, Ind. On Matthew’s coaching staff will be alum Marty Strother BA ’02. Matthew also teaches math at the new high school. His wife, Sara, teaches third grade in the same district.
Scott Vannatter TIP is enrolled in an online certifcation program at Indiana Wesleyan University to obtain certification in special education.
PC Walker BA is a volunteer coordinator at Powerhouse Ministries in Folsom, Calif. It is a ministry to the poor and low-income members of Folsom, Calif. Tonya (Doyle) Walker BA is an executive administrator at Adventure Christian Church in the young adult ministry.

Laura (Hart) Day BA graduated from physician assistant school and works at a local emergency room. She writes, “Married life is going great. We hope to add a new addition to our family soon … a puppy. We are hoping for a girl!”

Bill Hedge BA is the assistant maintenance director and the chaplain at Hope Hill. He is also the youth director at Hope First Church of God.
Brad Hilderbrand BA married Barbara Yates on June 16, 2006. He was selected as one of seven Indiana Governor’s Fellows for the 2006-07 fiscal year. He will be working within state government agencies on a three-month rotating basis.

Benjamin Grohs BA married Jessica White BA on Sept. 2, 2006, at the Grand Haven Lighthouse Pier in Grand Haven, Mich. They live in Lakeland, Fla. Jessica teaches fifth grade, and Benjamin is a carpenter’s assistant.
Heather Kaufman BA is serving a one-year term with Mennonite Voluntary Service in San Antonio, Texas, as a childcare teacher with Daughters of Charity.
Aaron Smith BA is appearing in three shows in Branson, Mo. He plays John “the beloved” in The Promise, a Broadway-style musical about the life and ministry of Jesus. He also appears in Smoke on the Mountain and Sanders Family Christmas.

1957 -- R. Eugene Price BS ’52, MDiv retired from the DVA Medical Center in San Francisco on Oct. 31, 2002. He and his wife, Carol A. (Hays) ’56, live in Lincoln Hills, Calif. Gene writes a monthly column for the Lincoln News Messenger newspaper. They have three children and five grandchildren.
1977 --Tim Foreman BA ’74, MDiv and Linda (Phillips) Foreman BA ’74 have relocated to Anderson, Ind., where Tim is the pastor of the South Meridian Church of God. They had lived in Otsego, Mich., for 25 years, where Tim pastored at the Otsego Church of God and Linda taught for 13 years with the Allegan County ISD. They have three sons, who are married.

1906 -- Jason Nelson MDiv is an associate pastor at Farmington Hills Church of God. He and his wife, Anne, welcomed their first child, Abigail Rae, on May 23, 2006.
