Lillian (Kitchen) Black celebrated her 80th birthday on Oct. 15 in Cincinnati at Dayspring Church of God. Four of her seven children attended: Steven, Nancy, Charles Black BA ’76, MDiv ’84, and Jim. “I thank the Lord that I reached 80 years,” she writes.

Donald Clingenpeel BA retired after teaching for 39 years, 35 of which were in his hometown of Breckenridge, Mich. He and his wife, Kay, have three grown children who still live in the central Michigan area. While teaching several different types of science during his career, Don, served for a time as secretary of the Michigan Biology Teachers Association. During the past six years, he became involved with the Space Foundation, headquartered in Colorado Springs. To celebrate his retirement, Don and Kay flew to New York where Don took and passed the test for the TV show Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. Unfortunately, he was not selected to be on the show. Don says he will miss his students. He and Kay plan to do some traveling and possibly volunteer as campground hosts in a state or national park. They are very active in their home church, the Edgewood Church of God.
Linda Nellans BA and Louise Teague BA attended the alumni gathering at the Cove in South Bend, Ind., this summer and say they had a wonderful time. It was a great opportunity to see classmates who lived in the area. They hope that more people will attend next year. They are also looking forward to the class of 1970 40th class reunion this year.

Roger Dean Lehman BA has been living in Europe since 1976. Initially he worked as a clinical psychologist for the United States Army and had a private practice as a psychoanalyst. Since 1999 Roger has been teaching at an international business school in France. In January 2010, Roger and his wife, Tessa, moved to Singapore, where Roger took a position as affiliate professor of entrepreneurship and family enterprise. Their two sons are studying at Syracuse and Duke University.

Constance “Connie” (Turner) Baughman BA is now a special educator for students in K-8 school of choice in her district. She is also an adjunct professor at Concordia University in Chicago. She recently enjoyed some time in Greece.

Pam Shoot BA works with the Youth Leadership Academy of Madison County, which recently won the Spirit of Anderson award. The organization was nominated for all of the work that it has done over the years to help Madison County become a better place to live and work.

Curtiss Paul DeYoung BA has published his latest book, Coming Together in the 21st Century: The Bible’s Message in an Age of Diversity, featuring contributions from ethnically and culturally diverse men and women. Among the contributors are notable authors, academics, and experts in the field of reconciliation and multicultural ministries.
Doyle Lucas BA received the Dr. Richard C. Chewning Award during the closing banquet of the national Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) in October. This prestigious award recognized Doyle’s servant spirit, long-term service to the CBFA, and his work with doctoral students across the Christian higher education spectrum.
Frank Rogers BA returned to Zimbabwe to lead a series of workshops focusing on the healing and reconciliation processes in local villages and churches, even in the midst of ongoing violence in the area. After receiving his BA from AU, Frank went on to receive his MDiv and PhD from Princeton. He has done significant work with abuse survivors as well as perpetrators in his current position as professor of spiritual formation at Claremont School of Theology.

Janet Kay (Short) Mora BA was named the Elementary Teacher of the Year in the McAllen Independent School District in Texas. Janet began her teaching career in Rock Valley, Iowa, in 1983, where she taught sixth grade. In 1985, she began her tenure at the Weslaco (Texas) ISD, where she taught kindergarten and first grade, and later served as a reading strategist until her move to the McAllen ISD, where she has served since 1999 as a first grade teacher at Milam Elementary School.

Ross Magsig BA received the Turnaround Achievement Award from the San Antonio Business Journal for his work in getting the YMCA of Greater San Antonio out of financial trouble. As CFO of the organization, Ross implemented what became known as Vision 2010, a plan for getting the YMCA’s fiscal operations back on track.

Scott Martin BA writes, “A little over a year ago, I left my much-loved position at AU to start Global Student Solutions along with several other individuals, including Amy Ramirez, Nate Edwards, Ishmael Lamptey, HyoJung Jang, Samir Pipalia, Debby Langat, and KinKan Kwok. All of us have been working part time, without compensation to connect global students studying in the United States from around the world. Among the gathering of students and offering flags for students to buy or sell as a fundraiser, we also have ventured into publishing. The first of four books we hope to release this year is To be...in Africa by AU alum Daria Barwinska.”

Rudy R. Pyle III BA was appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels to fill the vacancy of Madison County Circuit Court judge. With the appointment, Pyle became Madison County’s first African-American judge.

Ron Castle BA and Tina (Duff) Castle BA ’94 announce the arrival of their third child, Alysia Grace, on Sept. 5, 2009. Alysia was welcomed home by brother Joshua (8) and sister Ariana (5). Ron continues as the director of technology for Jonathan Alder Schools, and Tina is a stay-at-home mom. She also homeschools her children and teaches voice in her home. The Castles reside in Hilliard, Ohio.

Matthew Kutz BA recently published his first book, Leadership and Management in Athletic Training: An Integrated Approach, a textbook published by Lippincott, Williams, & Wilkins. This text is designed to help athletic trainers effectively integrate the art of leadership with the science of management. It covers current leadership and management theories and techniques, communication, and conflict resolution. Matthew is the director of clinical education in the Athletic Training and Clinic Management Program at Bowling Green State University.

George Martin, Jr., BA and his wife welcomed their new daughter, Tylin Olivia, on Feb. 24, 2009. George has published his first book, But What If I Fail.

Christy (Locke) Westberg and her husband, Eric, welcomed their third child, Lauren Ava, into their happy home Jan. 23, 2009. Christy was hospitalized for six weeks prior to Lauren’s birth at 34 weeks gestation. Christy writes, “Lauren is a delightful baby girl who is adored by her older brothers, Austin and Nate.” Christy works part time as an emergency room nurse and CLNC. Shayla (Wilson) Arnett BA and her husband, Eric, announce the birth of their daughter, Alexis Ann Arnett, on March 18, 2009. Shayla writes, “She is our first and only child, and she is a delight to us. I am still working at Members United Federal Credit Union in LaPorte, Ind. Upon the birth of Alexis, I dropped my hours from full time to part time so that I could enjoy more time at home with our baby.”
Karyn (Emerson) Norris BA completed her degree in nursing in June. She graduated with honors from Whatcom College and is now employed by Peace Health at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Wash., as a cardiovascular care registered nurse.

Tim BA and Jennifer (Stershic) Ponce BSN are living in Alexandria, Va. Tim has been employed as a foreign service officer for the U.S. Department of State for seven years. He has accepted his first domestic assignment as the division chief of American citizen services for East Asia and the Pacific. Jennifer is an RN on the Mother/Baby Unit at the Virginia Hospital Center. They write, “We are excited to be back in the U.S. for a few years and are looking forward to getting to see our friends and family more often.”

Nicholas lives in Fishers, Ind., and works in downtown Indy at ExactTarget.
Amy (Haltom) Hyman BA announces the arrival of her second child, William Alexander, born April 23, 2009. He was welcomed home by his sister Isabella, who loves to help take care of her “bubby.”

Laura (Perry) Mulligan BA married Andrew Mulligan on Sept. 12, 2009, in Carmel, Ind. Fellow AU alums in the wedding party included Erin (Mobley) Thompson BA, Reagen (Colby) Brown BA, and Meagan (James) Phillips ’96. The ceremony was presided over by the Rev. James Cook BA ’68. In addition, Laura completed her Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Butler University in December 2008 and accepted a teaching position to develop a new German program at Westfield High School, north of Indianapolis.

Kelli (Nipple) Knisley BA and Craig Knisley BA ’99 have been blessed with the birth of their second son, Ben Allen Knisley, born May 11, 2009, five weeks early. He is adored by his brother, Brady. Kelli is a partner at a tax and accounting firm, Rhodes Knisley LLP, in Indianapolis. Craig is in his tenth year at Westlake Community Church of God and switched to a new role as the pastor of discipleship and small groups.

Joyelle Schwarz BA writes, “I have had a great year. I traveled to New York City in the spring and saw several art museums and Broadway shows. It was truly an art lover’s heaven. I designed the stage for the North American Christian Convention in July, which featured Casting Crowns one of the nights. I just finished up the package design for a film, One in a Million. Randy and Julie (Harness) Dickey BA ’01 had their second child, Samantha Grace, on July 31, 2009. She weighed 8 lbs. 14 oz. and was 22 inches long. Kristen has some adjusting to do, but enjoys being a big sister. “We love our girls.”
Dan Skinner BA married Mary George on May 24, 2009. Alumni in the wedding included Jeremy Beutel BA ’01. “Mary and I reside in Louisville, Ky., where we sit on our front porch swing watching the sun set and yelling at kids who run into our yard. I am employed at Southeast Christian Church, and Mary is a nurse practitioner.”
Rob Steller BA and Christi (Armfield) Steller BA live in Louisville, Ky. Rob is an optometrist in a group practice after graduating from Indiana University Optometry School in 2006. Christi is a school counselor at the middle school level after graduating from Indiana University with her master’s in school counseling. Jonathan Kline received Teacher of the Year honors in his district in Indianapolis. Jonathan teaches at the Lynhurst 7th and 8th Grade Center. “It is an honor to be selected to represent a great school,” Jonathan says. “There are many great teachers in Wayne Township, and I feel privileged to represent them, my school, and the district.”

Jenna Ruble BA married Josh Kosnick in June 2008. They opened an Anytime Fitness club, located in downtown Madison, in February 2009, which Jenna is currently managing. Josh is a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and recently received his CLU designation.
