Education Majors & Minors

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION — (K-5)

Includes licensing as a generalist with developmental areas of early childhood (grades K-2) and middle childhood (grades 3-5). Students may add courses to become licensed as an early adolescent generalist (grades 6-8) in two of the following areas: mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR (49 hours)

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION COGNATE (13 hours)

  • ARTS 3500; CPSC 1200; MUED 2110; PEHS 3010; POSC 2080

SPECIAL EDUCATION — (K-12) (dual licensing)

Under the title of Elementary/Secondary and Special Education Dual Licensing Program, teacher education students seeking a teaching license in special education will also major in elementary or secondary education. The dual licensing program is designed to prepare teacher education students to work with children of special needs who participate in inclusionary classrooms and require mild levels of support or mild interventions to be successful. AU does not prepare teachers to work with severe or profound children.

ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE (dual licensing)

The program design for English as a New Language (ENL) is also a dual license program intended for those working toward an education major. It provides a foundation for teaching English as a second or foreign language in a variety of additional settings such as community and church-based programs for immigrants and refugees, and missions-related overseas teaching.

SENIOR HIGH/MIDDLE SCHOOL — (6-12)

Includes licensing in a specific content area and developmental areas of early adolescence (middle school, grades 6-8) and adolescence/young adult (high school, grades 9-12).

PROGRAM (38 hours)

  • EDUC 2000, 2102, 2100, 2110, 2400, 2420, 3000, 3100, 3120, 4030, 4040, 4110, 4710
  • Departmental Special Methods 4700 required for professional semester
  • Physical education teaching majors may substitute PEHS 3220 for EDUC 2400

In addition to this sequence, students in the senior high/middle school program must complete liberal arts program requirements (see the Liberal Arts Program in the Undergraduate catalog.) and specialty area major courses to satisfy the 124-hour graduation requirement.

EDUCATION CATALOG — (non-teaching)

Students who seek non-teaching careers related to the education of children or youth (such as child life, camps, religious education) may choose to pursue a catalog major or minor in education, programs which do not satisfy teacher education licensing requirements for the State of Indiana. To apply for the major, students must submit a letter to the dean of the School of Education indicating why the typical major is not consistent with their career goals. Approval will be given only to students not seeking a teaching license.
