Requirements

REQUIREMENTS FOR PRE-ADMISSION:

  • Overall GPA of 2.5 is required for admission to EDUC 2100, 2101, 2102, or 2110
  • Enrollment in education course EDUC 2000
  • Declaration of education teaching major
  • Submission and verification of a limited criminal history check

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION AND ADMISSION:

  • Elementary education majors must apply and be admitted to the teacher education program before enrolling in EDUC 3200, 3300
  • Senior high/middle school education majors must apply and be admitted to the teacher education program before enrolling in EDUC 3000 or 3100
  • 2.50 GPA overall, in the major content area, and in professional education courses. Note: Any education course with a grade less than C must be repeated
  • Favorable recommendations from the education faculty, the dean of student services, and the major department advisor (senior high/middle school)
  • Satisfactory completion of an assessment of written and oral communication skills
  • Acceptable scores on the PRAXIS I (Pre-Professional Skills Test)
  • Submission and verification of a limited criminal history check

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION FOR THE PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER:

  • Elementary education majors must apply and be admitted to the professional semester before enrolling in EDUC 2750, 4100, 4110, 4120
  • Senior high/middle school education majors must apply and be admitted to the professional semester before enrolling in EDUC 4000, 4110, 4710
  • Maintain a grade point average of 2.75 overall, in professional education courses, and in the major content area for licensure upon graduation
  • Satisfactory completion of all knowledge, performance, and disposition assessment criteria and any other assessment required by the State of Indiana for licensure
  • Successful completion of the PRAXIS II: Specialty Tests
  • Submission and verification of a limited criminal history check

Since 2004, several changes in academic requirements for teacher candidates have been implemented:

Grade Point Average Policy for Teacher Education Majors:

  • For majors declared prior to Semester I, 2004-05:

  • • 2.35 GPA
  • For majors declared Semester I, 2004-05 and thereafter:

  • • 2.50 GPA overall

Grade Point Average Policy for Student Teaching Professional Semester Application:

  • Prior to Semester I, 2004-05:
  • • 2.50 GPA
  • Semester I, 2004-05 and thereafter:
  • • 2.75 GPA overall in professional education courses and in the major content area

Minimum Grade Policy:

  • Majors declared prior to Semester I, 2004-05:
  • • Grade of C or better in all professional courses; ENGL 1100, 1110, 1120; and SPCH 1000
  • Majors declared Semester I, 2004-05 and thereafter:
  • • Grade of C or better in all professional courses and ENGL 1100, 1110, 1120; MATH 1100, 1110 (for elementary majors only); and SPCH 1000
