About the Center

Mission Statement:
The mission of The Center for CHARACTER Development is to recognize, enhance, teach and sustain positive qualities in the lives of persons in order to promote civility through character development. This education initiative will foster greater understanding and cooperation among individuals and organizations and will help to develop a positive environment to address issues that will shape our future.

Vision:
Each person becomes a champion for character development and education within their circle of influence- in the home, school and community- by forming a statewide Coalition committed to character education.

Goals and Objectives:
Develop a statewide clearing-house committed to bringing a character agenda to communities across Indiana and beyond

Build a statewide broad-based Community Coalition committed to character development and education

Develop a character education website to catalogue Indiana’s best practices and provide links to other information http://www.character-development.org

Create a character calendar with local schools submitting essays, projects and event information to be shared statewide

Develop and facilitate on-site character education workshops for schools, parents and communities

Partner with Indiana character based initiatives e.g., the NCAA and Citizenship Through Sports Alliance "Stay In Bounds" program, Indiana Department of Education, ERIC Clearinghouse at Indiana University, Purdue University 4-H Cooperative Extension Service, The Mendelson Center for Sport, Character & Culture at the University of Notre Dame, the Indiana State PTA, and the Indiana Commission on Community Service and Volunteerism.
