Donald Addison Courtney
The Series in Christian Education is dedicated to the memory of Don Courtney, long time Christian educator in the Church of God, and former professor of Christian education in the School of Theology. Don Courtney was the chief executive of the Church of God's national Board of Christian education for 20 years, during which time he expanded its service staff and ministries. An enthusiastic proponent of the Sunday school, he spearheaded various programs to strengthen this educational arm of the church, launched new curriculum and related teacher and administrative programs, created a program office and a staff position for the Sunday school. He was an ecumenical Christian and was widely concerned for the advancement of Christian education and nurture not only in the Church of God but around the world. Don served many years as chair of the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ, a remarkable occurrence that allowed him to influence that joint ministry of American churches even though Church of God polity does not provide for membership in church organizations. He was recognized around the country and throughout the world as one of the pre-eminent spokespersons for Christian education. |
