Get your computer ready for campus
Your computer must have a 10/100 network card. Most computers purchased within the last two years most likely have a network card.
- Category 5e network cable. 25-foot cables are the standard length for the dorm rooms, although 50-foot cables are available as well. Network cables will be available for sale during move-in days. The price is very competitive, ranging between $5 and $10.
- Windows must be fully patched. It’s a good idea to check for updates regularly. Before bringing your computer to campus, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to make sure all critical updates have been applied.
- Some suggested programs to protect yourself from spyware
programs: Malwarebytes (http://malwarebytes.org), Spybot Search &
Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html),
and AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.com/)
are a few good antispyware programs.
- IMPORTANT: Obtain an antivirus program AND make sure it is
up-to-date. Each student is required to obtain their own antivirus
solution. There are free antivirus solutions available from AVG and AVast. If
you purchased a new computer, either uninstall the trial version of antivirus or
pay to activate the installed trial version.
- Wireless access will be available in all public places, academic buildings and all dorms. Do NOT bring personal wireless routers and/or switches. Wireless cards should be 802.11a or 802.11g. We do not support "b" or "n" at this time.
- Pack original CDs of critical software (Windows Vista, XP, Office, etc.). If a problem with the machine or software occurs, original software is required.
- NO Windows ME. No Windows 98.
- NO file sharing programs (i.e. Morpheus, Kazaa, LimeWire).
