Volleyball team wins pair of matches in Kentucky

The Anderson University volleyball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Transylvania (3-2) and NAIA opponent St. Catherine (3-0) on Saturday at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

The Ravens defeated the Pioneers 23-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-10 and St. Catherine by scores of 25-6, 25-14 and 25-8.

Carol Weatherford led the Ravens with 18 kills, 15 service points, 10 blocks, six service aces and two digs. Kasey Bollier had 67 assists, 10 digs, two blocks and Jessica Berlin had 14 kills, 18 digs and seven service points.

Kate McCollum had 19 kills, five digs and Emily Bell added 11 service points and three digs. Caitlin Morency added 28 digs, nine service points and Allie Donaghy chipped in with 20 service points, 20 digs and six assists. Tara Denham added 10 kills in the first match.

Against St. Catherine, Sydnie Garber had nine service points, seven digs, two kills and Rachel Peli had nine service points, four digs and two service aces.

Sarah McBride had five kills, four digs and Paige Allen had nine assists and three digs. Kathann Cassel and Jessie Wolf added four kills each.

AU (8-10, 2-1 HCAC) hosts conference foe Bluffton on Wednesday. The match will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 7 p.m.

Indiana Wesleyan beats AU women’s tennis team

The Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to Indiana Wesleyan 9-0 on Thursday afternoon at the AU Tennis Courts.

AU (1-9, 1-5 HCAC) travels to Goshen on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Volleyball team gets first loop win at Franklin

The Anderson University volleyball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin College in four games on Wednesday night at the Spurlock Center in Franklin.

The Ravens won by scores of 25-22, 28-30, 25-18 and 25-20 to earn their first HCAC victory of the season.

Jessica Berlin led the Ravens with 12 kills, 12 service points and 11 digs. Caitlin Morency 17 digs, eight service points, three aces and Kasey Boller had 44 assists and 16 digs.

Liz Turner had nine kills, seven blocks and Carol Weatherford 12 kills and five blocks. Kate McCollum added eight kills, four digs, Emily Bell 10 service points and Allie Donaghy eight digs.

AU (6-10, 1-1 HCAC) travels to Lexington, Ky., on Saturday to play Transylvania (noon) and St. Catherine (2 p.m.).

AU hosts Dr. Kaiser during 2008 Newell Lecture

Anderson University will welcome Dr. Walter Kaiser, the Colman M. Mockler distinguished Professor of Old Testament and President Emeritus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Mass. for the 2008 Newell Lecture, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Dr. Kaiser served as president of Gordon-Conwell from 1997-2006. The title of the 2007 Newell Lecture is “The Majesty of God: Expositions from Isaiah 40, Daniel 4, Psalm 139, and Jeremiah 32..” The lectures will begin both days at 9 a.m. and will be conducted in Miller Chapel within the School of Theology.

Donahue, Cork win HCAC football awards

Anderson University football players Kaleb Donahue and Tristan Cork have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.

Donahue led the Ravens with 12 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a pass breakup on Saturday in their 47-14 victory over Earlham in Richmond. Donahue also returned one of the interceptions 46 yards for a touchdown.

Cork made 5-of-6 extra points in the game and added a pair of field goals from 19 and 37 yards. He also averaged 35 yards on five punts, including two inside the 20-yard line.

AU (1-2) has a bye week before hosting Hanover College on Oct. 4. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast from Macholtz Stadium at 1:30 p.m.

Men’s golf 3rd at AU Fall Invitational

The Anderson University men’s golf team finished third in the six-team AU Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Anderson Country Club.

Franklin won the event with a two-day total of 610. Manchester was second (614) followed by Anderson (615), Mt. St. Joseph (616), Rose-Hulman (622) and Wabash (626).

Lance Ramsey finished second overall, shooting a 75-73 148. Other AU finishers were Tyler Daniels (76-80 156), Kent Wohlberg (83-75 158), Justin Lane (77-82 159), Caleb Cunningham (78-81 159), Jeremy Redman (79-80 159), Tyler Smith (77-86 163), Jordan Roberts (80-87 167) and Kevin O’Bold (88-79 167).

Football team rolls over Earlham for first win

The Anderson University football team played its most impressive game of the season, defeating Earlham College 47-14 on Saturday at Darrell Beane Stadium.

The Raven offense rolled up 432 yards of total offense, including 296 passing. Quarterback Chase Thurston finished the game 23-of-37 for 296 yards and three touchdowns.

Zach Duke led the receiving corps with a career-high eight catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Chris Russell had four receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns and Tyler Akers added four catches for 63 yards.

John Sims led the ground game with 62 yards on 13 carries and Darryl Stott added 60 yards rushing on 10 attempts. Thurston added 19 rushing yards, including a 5-yard TD run.

The defense also scored a pair of touchdowns and forced five turnovers. Ryan Hildenbrand returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown and Kaleb Donahue added a 46-yard interception return for another score. Donahue finished with two pickoffs and Luke Hurst added a fourth interception.

Hildenbrand led the defense with 12 tackles, including 10 solo stops. Donahue added 11 tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup to go with his two interceptions. Chance Benbow had nine tackles and Hurst and Leonard Wells each added eight tackles. Josh Tinsley had a fumble recovery.

Tristan Cork added a pair of field goals from 19 and 37 yards and just missed tying a single game record when he hooked his third field goal attempt wide-right in the second quarter. Cork was good on 5-of-6 extra point attempts.

Volleyball team finishes 6th at DePauw Tourney

The Anderson University volleyball team went 1-3 on Friday and Saturday at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, finishing sixth in the eight-team tournament.

The Ravens defeated North Central (24-26, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 15-13) , but lost to Rose-Hulman (25-17, 25-19, 28-26), St. Mary’s (17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 15-13) and DePauw (25-21, 25-22, 25-16).

Jessica Berlin led the Ravens with 63 digs, 50 kills and 23 service points. Kasey Bollier had 168 assists, 30 digs, 10 service points and Carol Weatherford had 42 kills, 16 service points and 12 blocks. Tara Denham had 37 digs, 28 service points, 14 kills and Caitlin Morency added 96 digs and nine kills.

Kate McCollum added 28 kills, 10 service points and Liz Turner 19 kills and seven blocks. Allee Donaghy chipped in with 17 digs and 11 service points.

AU (5-10, 0-1 HCAC) travels to HCAC foe Franklin on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Women’s tennis team beats Bluffton for 1st win

The Anderson University women’s tennis team defeated Bluffton 6-3, but lost to Franklin 9-0 in a pair of HCAC contests on Saturday in Bluffton, Ohio.

Against Bluffton, Alex Hammel (No. 1), Becky Curtis (No. 3) and Katie Porter (No. 4) won in singles and all three doubles teams were also victorious. Hammel and Jessie Rigby combined to win at No. 1 (8-4) while Curtis and Porter won at No. 2 (8-4) and the duo of Nicole Newell/Emily Thompson were victorious at No. 3 (9-7).

AU (1-7, 1-5 HCAC) hosts Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday at 3 p.m.

AU receives IDEM grant to implement campus program

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is granting $328,754 to help 14 Indiana communities keep plastic, paper, aluminum and other recyclables out of landfills. Anderson University received $25,000 to convert itself into a more recycling-friendly campus, with plans to use the funds to purchase recycling trailers, bins and totes, and a campaign to inform students and faculty about the new recycling opportunities on campus.
