The Anderson University men’s basketball team lost at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Hanover College 83-78 on Saturday at Collier Arena in Hanover.
Mike Russell led the Ravens with 28 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals, hitting 8-of-15 field goals, including five 3-pointers. Russell also made 7-of-9 free throws.
Ryne Foster had 11 points and three rebounds off the bench in 12 minutes and Andrew Jones added 10 points, including 6-of-7 free throws.
Ryan Fultz chipped in with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and Jordan Wiseman eight points and seven rebounds.
AU shot 47 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the first half when it trailed 41-40. The Ravens also made 10-of-24 from 3-point range and added 18-of-25 free throws.
Hanover finished at 54 percent shooting, including 57 in the second half. The Panthers made 10-of-19 from 3-point range and 15-of-22 from the free throw line.
Hanover had a 33-26 advantage on the boards, including 12-9 on the offensive glass. The Panthers also had the edge in assists (14-10) while the Ravens had the lead in turnovers (9-12).
AU (14-6, 7-4 HCAC) hosts Rose-Hulman on Wednesday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium. The game will be carried live on WQME 98.7 FM and the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.

The Anderson University women’s basketball team completed its season sweep of Hanover College on Saturday, defeating their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival 66-53 at Collier Arena.
The Ravens won the first meeting in Anderson 79-73.
Kayla Martin led the Ravens with 25 points, five rebounds and two blocks, hitting 12-of-15 field goals, including a 3-pointer.
Lauren Leisure had 15 points and two assists, hitting 5-of-9 shots, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Mel Hawthorne was also in double figures with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Mandy Seward added three points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals.
AU shot 53 percent from the field, including 65 percent in the second half when it outscored the Panthers 41-27. The Ravens also hit 6-of-14 from 3-point range compared to just 2-of-8 for the Panthers. Hanover finished at 43 percent shooting.
The Panthers won the battle of the boards 37-22, including 11-2 on the offensive glass. They also had the advantage in points in the paint (32-30) and second chance points (10-2). The Ravens had the edge in assists (21-12), turnovers (13-23), points off turnovers (25-8), blocks (7-1) and steals (10-7).
AU (11-8, 9-2 HCAC) is tied with Transylvania for first in the HCAC standings with five games left. The Ravens travel to Rose-Hulman on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Megan Chapman figures she will be graduating next year with a bonus. Not only will she be leaving Anderson University with a hard-earned degree in education, she believes that when, as a teacher, she enters an elementary classroom she will be equipped to educate students from multiple environments and with a wide range of learning needs.

Kayla Martin became the sixth Anderson University women’s basketball player to reach the 1000-point mark as the Ravens defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mt. St. Joseph 68-55 on Wednesday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
Martin finished with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, hitting 6-of-12 field goals and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, including a 3-pointer. Martin hit a short jumper from the baseline with 14:18 left in the game for the 1000th point.
Tiffany Bowsher had 12 points, seven rebounds and Mel Hawthorne was also in double figures with 11 points, two assists, three blocks and two steals.
Mandy Seward had a team-high eight assists and four steals to go with five points and three rebounds. Lauren Leisure added nine points and Ellen Thompson had six points off the bench.
AU shot 43 percent from the field, including 53 percent in the second half when it outscored MSJ 36-25. The Lions finished at 37 percent shooting.
Mt. St. Joseph won the battle of the boards 49-28, including 18-5 on the offensive glass. However, the Ravens had the advantage in assists (16-9), turnovers (6-22), points off turnovers (23-11), blocks (3-1) and steals (11-2).
AU (10-8, 8-2 HCAC) is tied with Transylvania for the HCAC lead with six games left in the regular season. The Ravens travel to Hanover on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mt. St. Joseph 89-87 on Wednesday night at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Five players reached double figures for the Ravens, led by Ryan Fultz with 18 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench. Fultz hit 7-of-9 field goals and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Mike Russell, Rodney Holliday and Andrew Jones each had 15 points for the Ravens and Jordan Wiseman had 11 points. Ty Riddle had eight points and a team-high five assists and Gabe Miller added four assists.
AU (14-5, 7-3 HCAC) travels to Hanover on Saturday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 3 p.m.

The Anderson University softball team was picked to finish fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pre-season coaches poll on Wednesday.
Defending champion Rose-Hulman was picked to finish first with 75 points and five first-place votes. Defiance (68) and Bluffton (66) were each had two first-place votes.
Transylvania (48) was fourthfollowed by Anderson (47), Mt. St. Joseph (45), Manchester (24), Franklin (18) and Hanover (14).
The Ravens open the season against Oberlin on Feb. 28, in Danville, Ky.

The Anderson University baseball team was picked to finish fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pre-season coaches poll on Tuesday.
Franklin was picked to finish first with 70 points and three first-place votes. Rose-Hulman (67), Transylvania (66) and Mt. St. Joseph (63) each received two first-place votes followed by Anderson (43), Manchester (39), Bluffton (24), Hanover (20) and Defiance (13).
AU finished 24-14 last year, including 14-8 in HCAC play - good for fifth place. The Ravens open the 2009 season at DePauw on Feb. 28 at noon.

The Anderson University men’s basketball team fell to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Franklin College 74-67 on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
The loss drops the Ravens a game behind the HCAC leaders. Franklin (7-2) is tied with Defiance (7-2) and Transylvania (7-2) atop the conference standings.
Ryan Fultz led the Ravens with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in 27 minutes off the bench. The junior made 7-of-10 shots and 5-of-7 free throws.
Andrew Jones was also in double figures with 13 points in just 14 minutes, hitting 4-of-6 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws.
Jordan Wiseman had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Mike Russell had nine points, three assists and two steals. Ty Riddle added eight points off the bench.
Franklin won the battle of the boards 35-25, including 15-12 on the offensive glass. The Grizzlies also had the advantage in assists (15-11) and second chance points (18-12). AU had the edge in turnovers (12-20), blocks (3-1), steals (6-3), points in the paint (34-24), points off turnovers (28-15) and bench scoring (34-10).
There were three ties in the game, but the Ravens never led in the contest. Franklin led by as many as 12 points in the first half. AU got as close as two points on a pair of occasions in the second half with the last at 58-56.
AU (13-5, 6-3 HCAC) travels to Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.
