DePauw sweeps AU baseball team in season opener

vogt_webThe Anderson University baseball team opened the 2009 season by dropping a doubleheader on Saturday at DePauw University, losing 12-4 and 8-4 in Greencastle.

In the first game, Jeremy Hazen led the Ravens with three hits and an RBI, including a double. Brad Schnepp and Michael Tucker each had two hits and Cody Young added a double.

In the second game, Hazen had a home run and three RBI to lead the offense. Daniel Hiatt had two hits and an RBI and Chris Jarrett added two hits and two runs, including a triple.

Kevin Pence took the loss on the mound, allowing five hits and three runs in five innings, striking out four and walking three. Greg Vogt pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out two.

AU (0-2) travels to Indiana Tech next Saturday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast a noon.

Raven men 4th at Fred Wilt Indoor meet

stamour_webThe Anderson University men’s track and field team finished fourth in the 11-team Fred Wilt Memorial Indoor Invitational on Saturday in Ward Fieldhouse at the Kardatzke Wellness Center.

Vincennes won the meet with 162 points, followed by Calvin (108), Wabash (65) and Anderson (56).

“We performed well in a competitive meet,” said AU coach Scott Wilson. “If we could leave the meet knowing that we had given our best for that day then we would be successful. I think we did well in reaching for that goal.”

Leonard Wells and Tony Pryor led the Ravens with first-place finishes in the shot put and 800 meters, respectively. Wells had a throw of 14.93 meters in the shot whle Pryor ran a 1:57.55 in the 800. Wells also finished fourth in the weight throw (13.41 meters). The men’s 800 relay team was also victorious in a time of 1:34.74. Both Wells and Pryor’s efforts were personal bests for them.

Other top five finishers for the Ravens were Marc St. Amour in the 1,000 meters (2nd, 2:39.03), E.J. Cripe in the 55 meters (5th, 6.70), Dan Malloy in the 1,000 meters (2:41.88), Emby Duncan in the mile (5th, 4:35.25) and the men’s 1,600 relay team (3rd, 3:32.26).

AU travels to the DePauw Indoor Qualifier on Friday at 5 p.m.

AU women 5th in Fred Wilt Indoor Invitational

tipton_webThe Anderson University women’s track and field team finished fifth in the 10-team Fred Wilt Memorial Indoor Invitational on Saturday in Ward Fieldhouse at the Kardatzke Wellness Center.

Calvin won the meet with 140 points, followed by DePauw (109), Albion (63), Manchester (62) and Anderson (54).

“We performed well in a competitive meet,” said AU coach Scott Wilson. “If we could leave the meet knowing that we had given our best for that day then we would be successful.  I think we did well in reaching for that goal.”

Michelle Roth led the Ravens with a pair of first-place finishes in the 55 meter hurdles and the long jump. She finished the hurdles in a time of 9.00 and a distance of 4.65 meters in the long jump. She was also second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.39 meters. Roth’s time in the 55 hurdles was a personal best.

Other top five finishers for the Ravens were Erica Moffitt in the 3,000 steeplechase (3rd, 11:43.07), Brett Sears in the weight throw (3rd, 14.51 meters), Jordan Tipton in the pole vault (4th, 2.59 meters), Mollie Ringer in the mile (5th, 5:56.35), Candace DeLong in the 3,000 steeplechase (5th, 12:02.26) and Julia Connor in the high jump (5th, 1.47 meters).

The Ravens travel to the DePauw Indoor Qualifier on Friday at 5 p.m.

Hot-shooting Transy downs AU men in HCAC semifinals

futlz_web2The Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to No. 1 seed and host Transylvania University 76-69 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament semifinals on Saturday night at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

Andrew Jones led the Ravens with 15 points and five rebounds, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the field.

Jordan Wiseman and Ryan Fultz each had 15 points and five rebounds. Wiseman also had three assists, making 5-of-8 field goals and Fultz had four assists, hitting 4-of-6 shots.

Brock Morrison was also in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds. Mike Russell added seven points in his final game.

Transylvania shot 56 percent from the field and had more 3-pointers than 2-pointers. They finished 14-of-26 from behind the arc and 10-of-17 inside.

AU finished at 44 percent shooting, including 50 percent in the first half when it led 35-34. The Ravens made 6-of-20 from 3-point range and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.

The Ravens had a 28-25 advantage on the boards, including 11-5 on the offensive glass. The Pioneers had the edge in assists (16-13) and blocks (5-1), but the Ravens had the lead in turnovers (7-10), points off turnovers (17-3), steals (3-1), points in the paint (26-12), second chance points (12-8) and bench scoring (30-15).

The Ravens finished the season 15-12 overall and 7-9 in the HCAC.

Softball tournament canceled

The Anderson University softball team’s season opening tournament in Danville, Ky., on Saturday and Sunday was canceled due to bad weather. The tournament will not be made up.

Hanover ends AU women’s season in HCAC semifinals

seward_web2The Anderson University women’s basketball team lost to Hanover College 72-68 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament semifinals on Friday at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

Mel Hawthorne led the Ravens with 26 points, eight rebounds and three steals, hitting 10-of-24 shots from the field, including six 3-pointers.

Kayla Martin finished with nine points, eight rebounds and Mandy Seward added eight points, three rebounds, eight assists and three steals in their final game as a Raven. Seward finished with a school record 165 assists and 93 steals, two short of the single season record.

Tiffany Bowsher had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds and Lauren Leisure added nine points, four assists and two steals. Julie Bynum chipped in with six 3-pointers and Ellen Thompson five rebounds off the bench.

The Ravens made a school-record 14 3-pointers in the game in 28 attempts. The old record was 12 against Rose-Hulman on Nov. 26, 2002. AU finished at 40 percent shooting for the game, including 50 percent in the first half when it led 36-31.

Hanover finished at 48 pecent shooting, including 50 percent in the second half when it outscored the Ravens 41-32. The Panthers had advantage in rebounds (39-38), points in the paint (40-18), turnovers (17-18), points off turnovers (21-14) and bench scoring (25-8).

AU finishes the season 15-11 overall and 12-4 in the HCAC.

Dr. Barry Callen to receive life-time achievement award

The Wesleyan Theological Society, at its 2009 meeting at Anderson University, March 5-7, will present it most prestigious award. Anderson University Professor Emeritus of Christian Studies, Dr. Barry L. Callen, will receive the Society’s Life-Time Achievement Award at the Society’s Friday, March 6, evening banquet.

Basketball teams travel to Transy for HCAC semifinals

athleticsThe Anderson University men’s and women’s basketball teams will both be in action on Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

No. 2 seeded AU will play No. 3 Hanover in the second women’s semifinal at 4 p.m., and the No. 5 seeded men will play host and top-seed Transylvania at 8 p.m. The men’s game will be on the internet broadcast.

The Raven women beat Hanover twice during the regular season and finished 12-4 overall in HCAC play this season. They also had an eight-game win streak, which was the second longest in school history.

Mel Hawthorne leads the Ravens in scoring (16.7 ppg), rebounding (7.4 rpg) and blocks (50) and is second in assists (61) and steals (53). She also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career against Kalamazoo on Feb. 14, and is the only Raven to ever accumulate 400 points, 50 assists, 50 blocks and 50 steals in the same season.

Kayla Martin is second in scoring (12.2 ppg) and third in rebounding (7 rpg) and also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career earlier in the season. Martin was the conference MVP in 2007-08 and a three-time All-HCAC selection.

Tiffany Bowsher is third in scoring (9.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and Mandy Seward leads the HCAC in assists (157) and steals (87). Seward broke the single season record for assists and is eight steals behind that season mark.

The championship game is on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The AU men lost twice to Transylvania in the regular season, including an 82-77 decision at the Beck Center and a 78-74 loss in Anderson. The Ravens finished 14-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play and defeated No. 4 Bluffton on Tuesday 62-47.

Mike Russell leads the Ravens and the HCAC in scoring (18.5 ppg) and is second in assists (75), blocks (12) and steals (37).

Andrew Jones is second in scoring (11 ppg) and Rodney Holliday also averages double figures (10.7 ppg). Jordan Wiseman is fourth in scoring (7.8 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (5.4 rpg). Gabe Miller tops the team in assists (82).

The championship game is on Saturday at 7 p.m.

IRS Expands Education Tax Credits For Students

Anderson University was recently made aware of the passage of the Midwestern Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2008 (the Act). The Act provides for an expansion of the IRS Education Credits for students attending an eligible educational institution located in a Midwestern Disaster Area. Students attending Anderson University may qualify since Madison County is one of the designated counties.

AU to carry spring athletic events on Stretch

athletics1For the fourth consecutive year, Stretch Internet will carry Anderson University baseball and softball games live during the 2009 season.

AU alumnus and former coach Dave Edwards will announce 36 baseball games plus the Heartland Collegiate Athletic conference post-season tournament on Stretch Internet. In addition, 10 Raven softball games will also be carried live on the internet.

The first game will be at Indiana Tech on Mar. 7 at noon., followed by a doubleheader against old rival Taylor University on Mar. 10 at 2 p.m.

Edwards will announce all 12 baseball games on the Florida trip to Winter Haven as well as a pair of softball games on Mar. 16-17.

Other HCAC broadcasts include Rose-Hulman (Mar. 31 and Apr. 13), Hanover (Mar. 28), Bluffton (Apr. 3-4), Franklin (Apr. 7 and Apr. 28), Transylvania (Apr. 10-11), Manchester (Apr. 17-18), Defiance (Apr. 24-25) and Mt. St. Joseph (May 1-2).

Other softball games that will be carried are Manchester (Mar. 12 and Apr. 21), Rose-Hulman (Apr. 13) and Bluffton (Apr. 16).
