Dove Flight chopper and disaster lab offer lifelike experience for Nursing students

On Wednesday, AU School of Nursing students had some hands-on simulation experiences that broke the mold of a stereotypical classroom setting. Through an up-close tour of a Dove Flight helicopter and the “disaster lab,” students had the opportunity to learn first-hand what experiences may await them in the field.

Senior awarded Fulbright Scholarship

Senior Carrie Thomas, a language arts education and international education major from Plainfield, Ind., has been awarded Anderson University’s first Fulbright Scholarship.

Hazen wins HCAC baseball hitter of the week

hazenjeremyAnderson University’s Jeremy Hazen has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week on Monday.

The junior shortstop finished the week 7-for-14 (.500) at the plate for the Ravens as AU earned a three game sweep of Defiance. Hazen scored six runs, drove in 14 RBI, and added two doubles, three home runs, and a 1.286 slugging percentage.

In a 12-9 win over Defiance, Hazen tied a school record with eight RBI and hit two home runs, including a grand slam.

Anderson (21-14, 11-7 HCAC) currently occupies fourth place in the conference standings and will conclude the conference schedule against Franklin (Tuesday) and Mount St. Joseph (Friday and Saturday.

History Professor receives fellowship to travel to Oman

After applying for The Joseph J. Malone Fellowship with the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations (NCUSAR) in February, Dr. Joel Shrock, associate history professor, was notified that his application was chosen among nine others to leave March 10 to Oman.

Manchester hands softball team two losses in finale

haines_webThe Anderson University softball team lost a pair of games to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College on Sunday at Raven Field in the regular season finale. The scores of the games were 6-4 and 3-1.

In the first game, AU outhit Manchester 8-4, but committed a pair of errors that led to three unearned runs.

Chelsie Haines led the Raven offense with two hits and two RBI, including  double. Shayla Hinchman had two hits, Lys Hess an RBI suicide squeeze and Lauren Smith a double.

Monica Crowe took the loss, despite allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out eight with one walk. Jessica Alsman allowed two hits and two runs while walking two with a strikeout in 2.2 innings of relief.

In the second game, Haines hit her 11th home run of the season, tying Deann Edge’s and Amie Flowers single season records. Allie Hoover added a pinch-hit double as the Ravens were limited to two hits.

Gretchen Louzon took the loss on the mound, despite not allowing an earned run. She allowed four hits while striking out two with one walk. Lauren Smith pitched two scoreless innings of relief, walking two with a strikeout.

AU (23-15, 10-6 HCAC) travels to regular season champion Transylvania on Friday for the first game of the HCAC post-season tournament at 10 a.m. The Ravens will be the No. 4 seed and play the host and top-seeded Pioneers.

Baseball team completes sweep of Yellow Jackets

schnepp_webThe Anderson University baseball team swept Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College in a doubleheader on Saturday at Raven Park for Senior Day. The scores were 5-0 and 15-9 on Saturday and the Ravens won the opener 12-9 on Friday in Anderson.

In the first game, Brad Schnepp led the Raven offense with two hits, two runs and an RBI, including a home run.

Michael Tucker had two hits, including a double, and Cody Young and Chris Jarrett added RBI triples. Brett Detty chipped in with an RBI double.

Schnepp earned the victory on the mound, tossing a four-hit shutout while striking out one without a walk.

In the second game, David Addington led the AU offense with four hits and three RBI and Jeremy Hazen had three hits, two runs and three RBI, including a pair of doubles.

Brad Lantz had two hits, three RBI and Tucker added two hits, two runs and two RBI, including a double. Chris Jarrett chipped in with two hits, three runs and Cody Youg two hits, three runs and three stolen bases. Brady Roundtree also had a pair of hits.

Kyle Beckman earned the victory in relief, allowing two hits and one run in 4.1 innings of work while striking out two. Shane Nevers pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit.

AU (21-14, 11-7 HCAC) hosts Franklin on Tuesday at Raven Park. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 4 p.m.

The Ravens hold a three game lead over Manchester and Transylvania for the fourth and final spot in the HCAC tournament with four games left in the regular season.

AU finishes the regular season with a three-game series at Mt. St. Joseph on Friday and Saturday.

Softball team splits with Huntington on Senior Day

lane_webThe Anderson University softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday to Huntington College, losing the first game 4-0, but rebounding to take the second contest 3-2 on Senior Day.

In the first game, seniors Chelsie Haines and Kate Richards had the only two Raven hits in the game.

Jessica Alsman took the loss in the game, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out 10 and walking four.

In the second game, Haines hit the game-winning two run homer in the third inning to account for the final two runs of the game.

Lys Hess had an RBI suicide squeeze to account for the other RBI, driving in Julia Siefring, who had doubled. Siefring had a pair of doubles in the second contest.

Monica Crowe and Gretchen Louzon combined for the victory in the second game with the later getting the decision. Crowe allowed three hits and no earned runs in the first three innings and Louzon gave up only two hits over the final four frames.

Crowe struck out four batters without a walk and Louzon had two strikeouts annd two walks.

The Ravens also clinched a spot in the four-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament next Friday by virtue of Manchester and Mt. St. Joseph losing on Saturday in other conference games.

AU (23-13, 10-4 HCAC) hosts Manchester in the regular season finale on Sunday. The games will be carried live on the internet broadcast from Raven Park at 2 p.m.

Raven men 5th at HCAC track championships

mtrack3The Anderson University men’s track and field team finished fifth in the eigh-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday in Terre Haute.

Leonard Wells led the Ravens with a second place finish in the discus (156-2) and a third in the shot put with a toss of 47-10 1/2. Other runner-up finishers were E.J. Cripe in the 100 meters (2nd, 11.16), Tanner Johnson in the 800 meters (2nd, 1:57.17),

Other top five finishers were Baba Fahnbulleh in the long jump (4th, 20-7), John Rigsby in the pole vault (4th, 13-10 1/2), Matt Helm in the 5,000 meters (16:01.08) and 10,000 meters (4th, 33:20.97), Emby Duncan in the 1,500 (4th, 4:19.61), Jake Wyatt in the 10,000 meters (5th, 34:00.27), Matt Dougherty in the 3,000 steeplechase (5th, 10:34.10), Marc St. Amour in the 1,500 (5th, 4:19.95) and the 400 relay (5th, 44.35) and 1,600 relay team (4th, 3:31.67).

Team scores - Rose-Hulman 191, Manchester 138.5, Defiance 91, Franklin 84.5, Anderson 84, Hanover 75, Mt. St. Joseph 62, Bluffton 52.

AU women 4th at HCAC track championships

wtrack3The Anderson University women’s track and field team finished fourth in the nine-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Terre Haute.

Michelle Roth and Stephanie Stichter were named All-Conference after winning the triple jump (37-6) and shot put (40-0), respectively. Roth also finished second in the long jump (17-2 3/4) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.21).

Other top five finishers were Brett Sears in the hammer (2nd, 142-10), Brittany Stafford in the discus (4th, 106-9), Erica Moffitt in the 5,000 meters (2nd, 19:28.91) and 3,000 steeplechase (5th, 12:22.35), Mollie Ringer in the 10,000 meters (4th, 43:29.52), Candace DeLong in the 400 hurdles (2nd, 1:11.23) and 100 hurdles (5th, 16.90), Dani Rufenacht in the 400 meters (5th, 1:04.35) and 800 meters (4th, 2:32.69) and the 1,600 relay (3rd, 52.66) and 1,600 relay team (4th, 4:20.08).

Team scores - Manchester 134, Defiance 132.5, Franklin 131, Anderson 107, Rose-Hulman 81, Mt. St. Joseph 72, Hanover 51, Bluffton 45.5, Transylvania 26.

Engineers beat AU men’s tennis team 7-2

mtennis2The Anderson University men’s tennis team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman 7-2 on Saturday at the AU Tennis Courts.

Ben Wilson won at both singles and doubles to lead the Ravens on Saturday. He won at No. 3 singles (3-6, 6-1, 10-7) and also at No. 2 doubles with Jake Banwert (9-7).

AU (3-6, 3-5 HCAC) travels to the HCAC Championships on Saturday at the Indy Racquet Club. AU will be the No. 6 seed and play the No. 3 seed at 11 a.m.
