The Anderson University men’s soccer team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin College 3-1 on Tuesday at the AU Soccer Field in the conference opener.
The Ravens got a pair of second-half goals from Austin Fridley and Ruben Oliva to break a 1-1 tie at the half. Matt Young scored the first goal of the game to give the Ravens the early lead in the eighth minute.
Oliva scored the game-winner in the 48th minute with an assist from Eric Spencer and Fridley added an insurance goal just three minutes later with an assist from David Droeger.
AU outshot Franklin 14-9 in the game, but the Grizzlies had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Jake Savage earned the victory in goal in relief of Adam Harris, with both keepers recording one save.
Young led the Ravens with four shots while Fridley and Oliva added three shots each.
AU (4-6-1, 1-0 HCAC) travels to HCAC rival Hanover on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Anderson University’s Jessica Berlin was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week in volleyball on Monday.
The senior was named to the All-Tournament team this past weekend at Millikin. She had 40 kills, 69 digs, 24 service points, 10 blocks and eight service aces as the Ravens finished 2-2 in the tournament.
AU (9-6) hosts Transylvania on Saturday in the HCAC opener at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 1 p.m. They also play St. Mary’s at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Travel has been a part of Colleen Dillon’s life since she was an infant. Her family’s camping vacations throughout the U.S. have left an adventurous streak in the junior communication arts major from Hillsboro, Ohio. So when Dillon started praying for a summer opportunity where she could both learn, experience a new culture, and be forced out of her comfort zone, God answered.

The Anderson University women’s golf team finished 15th in the two-day DePauw Small College Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Deer Creek Golf Course in Greencastle.
Courtney Erickson shot rounds of 98-92 190 to lead the Ravens individually, and was 67th overall.
Other AU finishers were Kendria Stephens (100-94 194), Bailey Hunt (93-105 198), Holly Cloyd (100-100 200) and Hannah Wickard (110-105 215).
AU plays in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 10 in Lexington, Ky.

The Anderson University men’s soccer team defeated Robert Morris College 4-0 on Saturday at Macholtz Stadium.
Charlie Barleycorn scored the first goal in the fourth minute and Brian Stitely added an other goal in the first half with an assist from Kingsley Kantande. Matt Robinson and Raleigh Bonte each had second half goals for the Ravens with Caleb Nickel and Matt Young earning assists.
Adam Harris got the shutout in goal, recording two saves in the game. AU outshot Robert Morris 24-9 in the game and also had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Young led the Ravens with six shots and Stephen Harkleroad and Robinson each chipped in with three shots.
AU (3-6-1) hosts Franklin on Tuesday in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 4 p.m.

The Anderson University volleyball team defeated Aurora (3-0), but lost to Lincoln Christian (3-0) on Saturday in the Millikin Invitational in Decatur, Ill. The scores against Aurora were 26-24, 25-18, 25-18 and against Lincoln Christian they were 25-21, 26-24, 20-25 and 25-20.
Jessica Berlin was named to the All-Tournament team for the Ravens. The senior had 22 kills, 42 digs, 20 service points, seven blocks and three service aces in the final two games on Saturday.
Caitlin Morency had 38 digs, 17 service points, two aces and Taylor Cox had 45 assists and 12 service points, including an ace. Carol Weatherford had 15 blocks, 14 kills and Kate McCollum added 19 kills. Paige Allen added 32 assists and Allee Donaghy 16 digs. Sydnie Garber and Stephanie Weinman chipped in with seven blocks each, including a solo.
AU (9-6) hosts Transylvania on Saturday in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener at 1 p.m. The Ravens also play St. Mary’s at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Transylvania University 9-0 on Saturday at the AU Tennis Courts.

The Anderson University volleyball team defeated Robert Morris in three games, but lost to host Millikin in three games on Friday in Decatur, Ill.
The Ravens defeated Robert Morris by scores of 25-20, 27-25, 25-18, but lost to Millikin by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-19.
Jessica Berlin led the Ravens with 18 kills, 27 digs, nine service points and five service aces. Carol Weatherford had 18 kills, 11 service points, eight blocks and three service aces.
Allee Donaghy had 15 digs, eight service points, one ace and Taylor Cox had 43 assists. Caitlin Morency added 38 digs and Paige Allen 30 assists. Kate McCollum chipped in with 18 kills and Sydnie Garber and Tara Roberts added five and four blocks, respectively.
AU (8-4) plays Aurora (11 a.m.) and Lincoln Christian (3 p.m.) on Saturday in the final two matches at the Millikin Invitational.

Anderson University will dedicate a new space and a reading room for rare children’s books and special collections in the Robert A. Nicholson University Library on Friday, October 2 at 10:30 a.m. It is estimated that the rare collection contains approximately 6,000 books—many of which are first editions—by authors such as A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh), Beatrix Potter (The Tale of Peter Rabbit), and Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are). The books also contain one of the nation’s best collections of first editions by Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island).
