Manchester snaps losing streak in Bronze Ball game

The Anderson University football team fell to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College 35-14 on Saturday in the Bronze Ball Game at Macholtz Stadium.

The loss snaps the Ravens eight-game winning streak over the Spartans. AU finishes the season 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the HCAC, which was good for third place.

Darryl Stott led the Ravens with 143 yards rushing on 21 carries, including a 7-yard TD run in the second quarter to cut the Spartan lead to 14-7.

Stott also became the fourth back in school history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a single season. He finishes the season with 1,077 yards and 13 TDs. The other backs were Larry Bryant (1990), Thomas Lee (1992-94) and Denny Kimmel (2005, 2007).

Senior Chase Thurston finished 15-of-31 for 206 yards, including a 62-yard TD pass, in his final game. Chris Russell had two catches for 79 yards, including the TD reception.

Joe Davidson led the receiving corps with four catches for 55 yards and Nolan Bernard and Zach Duke each had three receptions for 55 and 32 yards, respectively.

Manchester finished with 503 total yards, while AU had 378 yards of offense. However, the Spartans turned the ball over just once while the Ravens had six turnovers, including three fumbles - all in Manchester territory.

Defensively, Leonard Wells, Jeremiah Townsell and Ryan Hildenbrand each had 11 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss. Michael Capstick and Kaleb Donahue each had nine tackles and Chance Benbow had the Ravens 21st interception of the year. It was the fifth most interceptions in a season for a Raven team.

For the season, Hildenbrand led the Ravens with 90 tackles, 18 tackles-for-loss, three sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recover. Luke Hurst was second with 88 tackles, followed by Townsell (83), Capstick (81) and Wells (72).

Donahue and Cory Perrin each had four interceptions to lead the team while Benbow and Jake Millikan had three each.
