Ravens move up to 13th in latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll

slyder_webFor the seventh straight week, the Anderson University men’s basketball team has been ranked in the d3hoops.com Top 25 coaches poll, which was released on Tuesday.

AU first appeared in the poll in Week 4 and rose from the 24th spot to 10th in Week 9, which was the highest in school history. After dropping its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Defiance, the Raven fell to No. 14 last week. However, they moved up one spot on Tuesday.

The Ravens have the fourth best record in NCAA Div. III, sporting a 19-2 overall mark, including 11-1 in the HCAC. The Ravens need to finish the regular season 4-0 to break the previous school record of 22 wins by the 1960-61 squad, which finished with a school-record 26 wins and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City.

The Ravens were also ranked 5th in the first Midwest Regional rankings, which were released last Wednesday and play a key role in determining at-large teams that make the NCAA Div. III tournament. The regional rankings are updated each Wednesday over the final month of the season leading up to the selection of the tournament field.

AU leads Hanover by three games in the HCAC standings with four games left on the regular season schedule. If the Ravens can win their next two games at home against Rose-Hulman (Wednesday) and Transylvania (Saturday), they will clinch their first conference championship in 28 years and ninth overall in school history.

Ty Riddle leads five Ravens in double figures in scoring at 14.1 points per game. Andrew Jones (14 ppg), Brock Morrison (14), Andrew Bowman (11.8) and Gabe Miller (10.8) also average double figures for AU. Morrison leads the team in rebounding (8.2 rpg) while Miller is first in assists (71) and steals (41).

AU hosts Rose-Hulman on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast and WQME 98.7 FM from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

Ravens sweep Grizzlies for first time since 2002-03

mbasketballThe Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Franklin College 80-58 on Monday night at the Spurlock Center in Franklin.

The Ravens also defeated the Grizzlies earlier in the season at Anderson, sweeping the season series for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Brock Morrison led the 14th-ranked Ravens with 24 points, 13 rebounds and two assists, hitting 8-of-13 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws.

Phil Hogan had 18 points and two steals off the bench, making 6-of-7 field goals and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Gabe Miller had 13 points, three assists, three steals and Andrew Jones added 12 points. Ty Riddle was also in double figures with 10 points, three assists and Tommy Strine chipped in with a 3-pointer and two rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench.

The Ravens shot 65 percent from the field, including 70 in the second half when it outscored the Grizzlies 40-30. AU shot 76 percent from 2-point range in the game, hitting 25-of-33 field goals. Franklin finished at 49 percent shooting, including 57 in the second half. AU made 5-of-13 from 3-point range and 15-of-22 from the free throw line compared to 2-of-13 behind the arc an 4-of-11 from the charity stripe by the hosts.

AU also had a 27-25 advantage on the boards. The guests also had the edge in points in the paint (42-32), turnovers (14-18), points off turnovers (29-16), blocks (2-1), steals (10-5) and bench scoring (21-10).

AU (19-2, 11-1 HCAC) hosts Rose-Hulman on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast and WQME 98.7 FM from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

No. 14 AU survives pesky Bluffton to improve to 18-2

Jones2_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Bluffton University 72-66 on Wednesday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Blackout Night in front of a season-high 1,400 fans.

The Ravens scored the first nine points of the game and only trailed once (14-13), but they never led by more than 12 points overall and eight in the second half in winning their 18th of 20 games this season.

Brock Morrison led the Ravens with 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, hitting 7-of-15 field goals and 5-of-7 free throws, including a 3-pointer. The sophomore also added three assists and a key steal late in the game with the Ravens clinging to a one-point lead.

Andrew Jones also had a double-double, finishing with a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, hitting 7-of-12 shots from the field. Gabe Miller was also in double figures with 11 points and six assists.

Leading scorer Ty Riddle was held to six points and fourth leading scorer Andrew Bowman missed the final 39 minutes after hitting his head on the floor in the first minute of the game. Phil Hogan and Zach Gray added six and five points, respectively, off the bench.

No. 14 Anderson shot 53 percent from the field, including 58 in the first half when it led 38-35. Bluffton finished at 43 percent shooting, but was 13-of-15 from the free throw line. The Ravens finished 15-of-20 from the charity stripe.

The Ravens had a 37-24 advantage on the boards, including 11-7 on the offensive glass. AU also had the edge in points in the paint (34-32) and assists (17-13), but the Beavers had the lead in turnovers (8-12), points off turnovers (14-11), second chance points (9-7), blocks (3-2), steals (6-3) and bench scoring (19-13).

AU led 48-40 with 13 minutes left in the game, but Bluffton used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to a single point with 11 minutes remaining. Neither team would lead by more than three points until Morrison hit a 3-pointer to push the AU advantage to 60-55 with five minutes left.

Bluffton got as close as 60-59 with four minutes left and the ball, but Morrison’s steal resulted in a pair of free throws and a three-point lead with three minutes remaining. The Beavers would close to within three one more time at 69-66 with 45 seconds left, but Miller hit a free throw and Jones added two more in the final 30 seconds to clinch the victory.

In the second half for the Ravens, Morrison, Jones and Miller combined to score 32 of 34 points, grab 15 of 18 rebounds and register 3 of 4 assists.

AU (18-2, 10-1 HCAC) travels to Franklin on Saturday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast from the Spurlock Center in Franklin at 3 p.m.

Jackets snap Ravens’ school-record winning streak at 14

mbasketballThe Anderson University men’s basketball team dropped its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game of the season, falling to Defiance College 91-75 on Wednesday night in Defiance, Ohio.

The loss snaps the Ravens school-record 14 game winning streak and is their first road loss in 10 games this season. Their only other defeat came to Augustana on Nov. 28.

No. 10 Anderson was led by Gabe Miller with a season-high 22 points and three rebounds, hitting 8-of-14 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws. Brock Morrison had 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and Andrew Bowman had 11 points and five rebounds.

Zach Gray added eight points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench and Phil Hogan chipped in with seven points, four assists and two blocks. Leading scorer Ty Riddle was held to four points and three assists, hitting just 2-of-9 field goals.

AU shot 44 percent from the field, including 54 in the first half despite trailing 45-40. Defiance finished at 58 percent shooting, including 59 in the second half when it outscored the Ravens 46-35.

Defiance had a 35-25 advantage on the boards and also had the lead in points in the paint (44-36), assists (18-13), second chance points (11-8) and bench scoring (32-16).

Neither team led by more than eight points in the first 30 minutes with the Yellow Jackets holding a 61-60 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Defiance scored the next seven points and used a 20-3 run over the next six minutes to take control of the game.

AU (17-2, 9-1 HCAC) hosts Bluffton next Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast and WQME 98.7 FM from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

AU sets consecutive win record with victory over Lions

Morrison_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for Mt. St. Joseph 66-63 on Saturday at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The victory was the 14th in a row for the Ravens, breaking the previous mark of 13 set by the 1960-61 team, which finished the season 26-4 overall and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. AU is also ranked No. 11 in the latest NCAA Div. III Top 25 poll, its highest ranking in school history.

Brock Morrison led the Ravens with 17 points, two rebounds, four assists and three steals, including a three-point play late in the game (pictured at left) to cap an emotional 6-0 run and give the Ravens a one-point lead. Morrison hit 5-of-11 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Gabe Miller had 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and Andrew Bowman was also in double figures with 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Andrew Jones had seven points, nine rebounds, two assists and Ty Riddle added seven points, two rebounds and five assists. Phil Hogan and Josh Bellamy chipped in with six and five points, respectively, off the bench.

AU shot 43 percent from the field, including 48 in the second half when it outscored the hosts 37-32. MSJ finished at 45 percent shooting, including 52 in the second half.

The Lions had a 35-31 advantage on the boards, including 11-10 on the offensive glass. The Ravens had the edge in points in the paint (32-24), assists (15-12), turnovers (4-13), points off turnovers (11-6), blocks (5-4) and steals (6-2).

AU scored the first 11 points of the game, hitting its first four shots, including three 3-pointers. MSJ used a 28-16 run over the next 14 minutes to take its first lead of the game at 28-27  with two minutes left in the half. AU missed 16 of its final 22 shots of the half and trailed 31-29 at the intermission.

The Lions led by as many as six points in the second half, but a 7-0 run by the Ravens gave the visitors their first lead of the half at 48-46 with 11 minutes remaining. MSJ led 59-54 with six minutes left, but a 3-pointer by Riddle cut the deficit to two and Morrison’s three-point play a minute later gave the Ravens the lead at 60-59.

Mount retook the lead briefly with a bucket, but Jones offensive rebound basket with 3:30 left gave the Ravens the lead for good at 62-61. Neither team would score for the next two minutes before Miller hit a jumper in the lane to push the lead to three. Bowman and Riddle each added a free throw in the final minute and the Lions missed a potential tying 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds to secure the victory.

AU (17-1, 9-0 HCAC) travels to Defiance on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.

Ravens tie consecutive win mark set by 1960-61 team

mbasketballThe Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Manchester College 77-75 on Wednesday night at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena in North Manchester.

The victory was the 13th in a row for the Ravens, which are ranked No. 11 in the latest NCAA Div. III Top 25 poll. The 13 straight victories ties the school record set by the 1960-61 team, which also finished the season with a school-best 26-4 record. The No. 11 ranking is also the highest in school history.

Ty Riddle led the Ravens with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, hitting 6-of-13 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Andrew Bowman also had 18 points go to with four rebounds and three steals, including the game-winning layup with 14 seconds left in the game.

Brock Morrison had 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and Zach Gray added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Gabe Miller was also in double figures with 10 points, three assists and Andrew Jones chipped in with seven points.

AU shot 47 percent in the game, including 8-of-21 from 3-point range while Manchester was a t 50 percent shooting, including 57 in the first half when it led 41-40.

The Spartans had a 35-27 advantage on the boards, including 11-8 on the offensive glass and also had the edge in assists (15-13), blocks (5-3) and bench scoring (23-13). The Ravens had the lead in turnovers (9-13), points off turnovers (14-8) and second chance points (10-8) with both teams notching eight steals.

After leading by a point at the break, Manchester scored the first four points of the second half and led by as many as nine points at 54-45 with 14 minutes left in the game. AU closed to within a point twice in the next five minutes, but the Spartans pushed the lead back to seven at 68-61 with six minutes left in the game.

Manchester still led 70-64 with four minutes left, but the Ravens used a 10-0 run to take a four-point lead with 33 seconds remaining. The Spartans hit a 3-pointer, stole the ball and added a layup to reclaim the lead at 75-74 with 25 ticks left in the contest. Bowman answered with the game-winning shot with 14 seconds left, but Manchester had its chances, missing two shots and two free throws in the final 10 seconds. Jones hit 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds remaining for the final points of the game.

AU (16-1, 8-0 HCAC) travels to Mt. St. Joseph on Saturday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast from Cincinnati, Ohio, at 3 p.m.

No. 14 Ravens survive late Panther rally for 15th win

Bowman_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team won its 12th consecutive game on Saturday, defeating Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Hanover College 74-70 at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

The victory is the second longest in school history and one short of the record set by the 1960-61 team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament and finished with a school record 26 wins.

Ty Riddle led the 14th-ranked Ravens with 20 points, two rebounds and two assists, hitting 5-of-13 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers.

Andrew Jones had 17 points and seven rebounds, hitting 8-of-11 field goals, and Gabe Miller had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, including 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Andrew Bowman was also in double figures with 12 points, five rebounds, three blocks and Phil Hogan added eight points and two assists off the bench, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

AU shot 49 percent from the field, including 59 in the first half when it led 42-33. Hanover finished at 43 percent shooting, including 45 in the second half when it outscored the hosts 37-32.

Hanover won the battle of the boards 40-31, including 14-5 on the offensive glass. Both teams finished with 12 assists and four steals with the Ravens committing one fewer turnovers (8-9). The Ravens had the edge in points in the paint (40-32) and points off turnovers (14-7).

AU led for most of the game, including 42-33 at the half. The hosts led by as many as 16 points in the game and still led 53-39 with 15 minutes left in the game. However, the Panthers used an 11-0 run over the next six minutes to close the margin to three and missed a 3-pointer to tie the game with 10 minutes left.

Miller’s layup snapped the drought and Jones added a 3-pointer to push the lead back to eight. Hanover closed to within a single point at 69-68 on a jumper, but two free throws by Hogan gave AU a three-point cushion. The Panthers had one final chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but turned the ball over on the baseline after a missed free throw with three seconds left. Bowman hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.

AU (15-1, 7-0 HCAC) travels to Manchester on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast from North Manchester at 7:30 p.m.

AU men extend winning streak at Rose-Hulman

mbasketballThe Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman 68-65 on Wednesday at Hulbert Arena in Terre Haute.

The victory was the 11th in a row for the Ravens, who are ranked No. 14 in this week’s d3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The win ties the 1960-61 team for the second longest winning streak. That team also holds the longest winning streak with a 13-game stretch in the same season.

Andrew Bowman led the Ravens with 17 points, three rebounds and three blocks, hitting 8-of-12 field goals in the game.

Brock Morrison had 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and Ty Riddle was also in double figures with 12 points, two rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Gabe Miller added nine points, four assists and Andrew Jones chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.

AU shot 46 percent from the field, including 65 in the second half when it outscored the Engineers 43-37. The Ravens had the advantage in points in the paint (40-38), assists (20-14), turnovers (5-10), points off turnovers (13-5), steals (7-4) and bench scoring (12-10) while the hosts had the edge in rebounds (33-28) and second chance points (14-11).

Morrison wins HCAC Men’s basketball award

Morrison.BrockAnderson University’s Brock Morrison has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.

The forward Brock Morrison helped the Ravens run their win streak to 10 in a row, scoring 22 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and added two assists and three steals in a 72-59 win over Franklin.   The sophomore followed with 19 points and seven rebounds in AU’s 91-72 win at Transylvania Saturday afternoon.

Morrison connected on all 13 of his free throw attempts against the Pioneers, tying a single game Anderson record for free throw percentage. For the week, Morrison averaged 20.5 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists, two steals, and one block.

No. 18 ranked Anderson (13-1, 5-0 HCAC) travels to Rose-Hulman Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.

Ravens run past Pioneers for 10th straight victory

Hogan_web2The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Transylvania University 91-72 on Saturday at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

The victory was the 10th in a row for the 18th-ranked Ravens, matching the 1981-82 team for the third longest streak in school history. The school record is 13 games set by the 1960-61 team.

Brock Morrison also tied a single game record for free throw percentage, hitting 13-of-13 from the charity stripe. The sophomore finished with with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a block. Morrison shares the record with Craig Brunnemer, who made all 13 of his free throws on Dec. 5, 1995.

Ty Riddle led the Ravens with 23 points, five rebounds and three assists, hitting 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. He had 20 points in the second half, including five 3-pointers.

Phil Hogan had 12 points, three assists and Gabe Miller and Andrew Jones both had 11 points. Miller had five rebounds, five assists and Jones two rebounds and three assists.

AU shot 65 percent in the game, including 72 percent (18-of-25) in the second half. The Ravens also made 10-of-17 shots (59 percent) from 3-point range. Transy finished at 53 percent shooting, but only 4-of-19 from behind the arc.

The Ravens had a 27-19 advantage on the boards and also had the edge in points in the paint (40-36), assists (22-13), points off turnovers (24-20) and second chance points (6-2).

Transylvania led 29-20 late in the first half, but AU used a 12-1 run over the final five minutes to take a 32-30 lead into the lockerroom. The Ravens scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 45-30 lead and were never threatened over the final 16 minutes.

AU (13-1, 5-0 HCAC) travels to Rose-Hulman on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.
