Hogan named to 1st Team; Morrison 2nd in HCAC

Hogan.PhilAnderson University’s Phil Hogan has been named to the six-player Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference 1st Team on Tuesday. Senior Brock Morrison was named to the 2nd Team and Andrew Bowman was Honorable Mention.

Hogan led the HCAC in scoring this year at 19.5 points per game, including a career-high 40 against conference champion Transylvania. The junior also averaged three rebounds and 2.1 assists per game and was second on the team with 35 steals.

Morrison averaged 15 points, a team-high 9.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game this season in 27 games. The senior surpassed the 1,000-point, 500-rebound and 200-assist plateau, becoming only the second player in school history to reach all three milestones. He finished with 1,258 points (18th) and 760 rebounds (10th) for his career.

Bowman averaged 14.4 points, six rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and led the team with 70 blocks. He also reached the 1,000-point mark for his college career, finishing with 939 at Anderson and 64 at Franklin. He ranked third in career blocks (70) and 10th in career field goal percentage (539). He was also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

AU finished the season 15-12 overall, advancing to the semifinals of the HCAC post-season tournament for the fifth straight year.

No. 1 Pioneers end Ravens season in HCAC semifinals

Morrison_web3The Anderson University men’s basketball team saw its season come to an end in the semifinal round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament as they lost to No. 1 seed Transylvania University 71-59 on Saturday night at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

Jake Browne led the Ravens with 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws.

Senior Brock Morrison recorded his 11th double-double this season and the final one of his career, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team for the HCAC Tournament.

Morrison finishes his career with 1,258 points and 760 rebounds, which rank 18th and 10th on the school lists, respectively.

Senior Andrew Bowman also reached the 1,000-point milestone in the game with his fifth point on a layup early in the second half. Bowman tallied 939 points at Anderson and 64 at Franklin for a total of 1,003 in his career. He finished with eight points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Phil Hogan added 10 points, three assists and four steals while Jason Riley was also in double figures with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

AU shot 40 percent from the field in the game, including 48 in the second half. Transylvania finished at 50 percent shooting, including 57 in the second half.

The Ravens had one more field goal than the Pioneers (23-22), but the home team was 21-of-36 from the free throw line while AU was 9-of-18 from the charity stripe.

AU had a 37-31 advantage on the boards, including 14-7 on the offensive glass. The Ravens also had the edge in points in the paint (32-28), steals (8-6) and second chance points (10-2) while the Pioneers had the lead in assists (14-13) and points of turnovers (18-10).

The Ravens finish the season 15-12 overall and 10-8 in the HCAC.

Ravens survive Bluffton in HCAC tournament opener

Bowman_web3The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Bluffton University 69-67 in the quarterfinal round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament on Friday night at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

“This is an unbelievable win,” said AU coach Tom Slyder. “It’s tournament time and there are no style points. It’s advance and move on to the next game.”

The Ravens led throughout the game, including 42-33 at the half, but the Beavers rallied to take a 67-66 lead with just over two minutes left in the contest. Phil Hogan hit a 15-foot jumper with 1:50 left in the contest, which would turn out to be the game-winner.

The Ravens missed five consecutive free throws down the stretch before Jake Browne ended the drought and accounted for the final point. Bluffton missed its final six shots of the game, including two in the final seven seconds.

“We got five stops at the end of the game even though we missed five free throws and shot ourselves in the foot,” said Slyder.

Andrew Bowman led the Ravens with 19 points, six rebounds and two assists, hitting 8-of-12 field goals and 3-of-5 free throws. Bowman needs five points to reach the 1,000 mark for his career.

Jason Riley had 14 points, two rebounds, five assists and Brock Morrison added 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. With his fifth rebound, Morrison moved into the Top 10 on the career rebounding list with 749. He also moved into the Top 20 on the career scoring list and has 1,247 during his four seasons at Anderson.

Hogan also finished with 11 points and Browne added five points and six rebounds. Andrew Larrick chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

“Those guys aren’t freshmen anymore,” Slyder said of Riley and Larrick. “They have played 26 games and Riley came up big tonight.”

AU shot 49 percent from the field, including 59 in the first half when it led by nine. Bluffton finished at 42 percent shooting for the game.

The Beavers had a 36-34 advantage on the boards, including 13-11 on the offensive glass. The Ravens had the edge in points in the paint (38-30), points off turnovers (15-8), second chance points (16-8) and steals (6-4).

AU (15-11) played No. 1 seed Transylvania in the second semifinal game on Saturday night at 8 p.m. It is the fifth consecutive season the Ravens had advanced at least to the semifinal round of the tournament.

AU men win regular season finale at Mt. St. Joseph

Riley_web2The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mt. St. Joseph 63-59 on Saturday at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Phil Hogan led the Ravens with 21 points and two steals, hitting 7-of-13 field goals and 6-of-10 free throws, including a 3-pointer.

Andrew Bowman had 13 points, eight rebounds and two assists, making 4-of-7 shots and 5-of-6 free throws.Bowman needs 24 points to reach the 1,000 mark for his college career.

Jason Riley was also in double figures with 10 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals. Brock Morrison chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.

AU shot 47 percent from the field, including 57 in the first half when it led 31-30. MSJ finished at 45 percent shooting, including 10-of-23 from 3-point range.

Both teams finished with 28 rebounds with the Ravens having a 9-8 advantage on the offensive glass. AU also had the edge in points in the paint (30-22), turnovers (15-18), points off turnovers (23-18) and steals (12-7).

AU (14-11, 10-8 HCAC) will be the No. 5 seed in the HCAC post-season tournament next Friday at Transylvania University. The Ravens will play Bluffton in the second quarterfinal at 8 p.m.

AU men fall at Manchester; clinch HCAC berth

mbasketballThe Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College 81-71 on Wednesday night at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena in North Manchester.

Despite the loss, the Ravens clinched a spot in the six-team HCAC post-season tournament on Feb. 24 at Transylvania University.

Brock Morrison led the Ravens with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, hitting 8-of-19 field goals, including four 3-pointers.

Andrew Bowman was also in double figures with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists, hitting 4-of-12 field goals. Bowman needs 37 points to reach the 1,000-mark for his college career.

Phil Hogan was also in double figures with 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists, making 7-of-17 field goals, including three 3-pointers. Andrew Larrick chipped in with six points and seven rebounds off the bench.

AU had a 39-37 advantage on the boards, including 17-13 on the offensive glass, but Manchester had the edge in second chance points (20-12), points off turnovers (24-15) and bench scoring (22-8). The Ravens had the lead in assists (16-12) and steals (12-7).

AU (13-11, 9-8 HCAC) finishes the regular season at Mt. St. Joseph on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Morrison wins HCAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Award

Morrison.BrockAnderson University senior forward Brock Morrison has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.

The senior notched a pair of double-doubles as the Ravens earned a 1-1 mark last week in the HCAC. The senior netted 19 points and hauled in a career-high 19 rebounds with four assists and three steals as the Ravens narrowly fell to Hanover 69-67 on Wednesday evening. Morrison came back with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists in AU’s 79-65 win over Franklin on Saturday.

For the week, the senior averaged 17.0 points, 16.5 rebounds, and four assists. 

Anderson (13-10, 9-7 HCAC) can clinch a spot in the upcoming HCAC tournament with a road win over Manchester or Mount St. Joseph this week.

Morrison, Bowman Go Out With Victory on Senior Day

Bowman_web3The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Franklin College 79-65 on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Senior Day.

Phil Hogan led the Ravens with 26 points, four rebounds and two assists, hitting 8-of-16 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws, including three 3-pointers.

Morrison had 15 points, 14 rebounds and four assists on 5-of-12 shooting and Bowman added 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and a career-high six blocks, making 5-of-8 field goals.

“It’s good to get the win for our seniors,” said AU coach Tom Slyder. “Now we’ve got to just keep building our confidence and keep building momentum.”

Jake Browne had nine points, three rebounds and Jason Riley added six points, three rebounds, six assists and three steals. Andrew Larrick chipped in eight points and two assists off the bench.

AU shot 56 percent from the field, including 61 in the second half when it outscored Franklin 46-44. The Grizzlies finished at 40 percent shooting, including 28 in the first half when the Ravens led 33-21.

The Ravens had a 31-30 advantage on the boards, but the Grizzlies had the edge in offensive boards 13-7. AU had the lead in points in the paint (36-22), assists (17-14), turnovers (15-19), points off turnovers (22-14), blocks (6-3) and steals (6-4).

AU (13-10, 9-7 HCAC) needs one win in its final two games to clinch a spot in the six-team HCAC post-season tournament at Transylvania on Feb. 24. The Ravens are currently tied with Rose-Hulman for the No. 3 seed.

“We still have a chance to not make the tournament,” Slyder said. “We’re not taking anything for granted.”

AU Men’s Rally Falls Short Against Hanover

Hogan_web3The Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Hanover College 69-67 on Wednesday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Ravens scored a season-low 13 points on 17 percent shooting in the second half and trailed 28-13. However, the Ravens responded with a season-high 54 points in the second half on 58 percent shooting, but fell just short of a comeback win.

AU took a 51-48 lead with just over five minutes left, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Hanover gave the guests back the lead and they never relinquished the rest of the way.

Brock Morrison led the Ravens with 19 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, hitting 6-of-18 field goals and all four of his free throws, including three 3-pointers. The senior also had four assists, three steals and a block in 36 minutes.

Andrew Bowman scored a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and three assists, making 6-of-10 field goals. Jake Browne added 12 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting and HCAC scoring leader Phil Hogan chipped in with 10 points on 3-of-13 field goals.

AU outrebounded Hanover 38-29, including 18-10 on the offensive glass. The Ravens had the advantage in points in the paint (34-26), turnovers (14-16), points off turnovers (17-16), second chance points (21-8), assists (15-13) and steals (10-9).

AU (12-10, 8-7 HCAC) hosts Franklin for Senior Day on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Ravens lead the Grizzlies and Manchester by one game for the sixth and final spot in the post-season tournament with three games remaining.

Ravens hold on to give Slyder 100th victory at Bluffton

Slyder_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team nearly blew a 15-point second-half lead, but hung on to defeat Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Bluffton University 70-67 on Saturday at Founders Hall in Bluffton, Ohio.

The victory was the 100th in his career for AU head coach Tom Slyder, who now has an overall record of 100-82 in seven seasons in Anderson.

“I’m just glad to get the win the way it played out,” said Slyder. “I have three guys that have been a big part of a lot of those wins and that’s the result of hard work. They bought into the vision that we set for them.”

Andrew Bowman led the Ravens with 21 points and six rebounds, hitting 5-of-9 field goals and 11-of-12 free throws.

Brock Morrison had 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and Phil Hogan added 13 points – all in the first half.

Jason Riley was also in double figures with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, hitting 6-of-9 field goals.

“Bowman came up big,” said Slyder. “This is the third game in a row that one of the big three didn’t score and it was a team victory by playing defense.”

AU shot 55 percent from the field, including 64 in the first half when it led 40-25. Bluffton finished at 42 percent shooting, including 33 in the first half.

The Ravens won the battle of the boards 29-25, but the Beavers had a 9-5 edge on the offensive glass.

AU also had the lead in points in the paint (38-34) and steals (9-5) while Bluffton had the advantage in assists (12-11), turnovers (13-15), points off turnovers (18-16) and second chance points (15-6).

AU led by 15 early in the second half, but Bluffton used a 21-11 run to cut the lead to 55-54 with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

Neither team led by more than four points over the final 10 minutes and it was tied at 63 and 65 with three minutes remaining.

AU took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Bowman, who scored the final seven Raven points in the game. The senior gave the visitors a 70-67 lead with another free throw in the final 10 seconds and blocked a 3-pointer on the previous Bluffton possession.

The Beavers final 3-pointer to tie bounced off the rim, giving the Ravens their fourth straight conference victory.

“We continue to build in the conference and that is three wins in a row on the road,” said Slyder.

AU (12-9, 8-6 HCAC) hosts Hanover on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Ravens roll to third straight HCAC win at Rose-Hulman

mbasketballThe Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman 60-49 on Wednesday night at Hulbert Arena in Terre Haute.

HCAC Player of the Week Phil Hogan led the Ravens with a game-high 26 points and four rebounds, hitting 10-of-16 shots and all four of his free throws, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Andrew Bowman was also in double figures with 10 points, three rebounds and Jason Riley added nine points and four assists. Jake Browne chipped in with seven points, 10 rebounds. Leading scorer Brock Morrison was held to a season-low three points and six rebounds.

AU shot 48 percent from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Rose-Hulman finished at 39 percent shooting, including 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. Both teams had four 3-pointers made.

The Ravens had a 30-28 advantage on the boards, but the Engineers had the edge in offensive rebounds (6-3). Rose-Hulman had the lead in points in the paint (30-28), assists (11-8) and steals (7-3) while AU had the advantage in points off turnovers (9-6) and second chance points (7-6).

AU (11-9, 7-6 HCAC) travels to Bluffton on Saturday at 1 p.m.
